fido··on System76 Launch Configurable Keyboard with Open Source Code
Another cool reason: This board uses QMK firmware, which also has built-in support for MIDI, including a sequencer. So, I can have a layer that sends midi cc, notes on/off, program changes, clock, etc.

If I'm working in a DAW such as Pro Tools or Logic, I can do all sorts of things such as program keys to play full chords or chord progressions. Maybe I want to press some key combo to start/stop my external sequencer, or arm/disarm a synth to improvise live with a looper, but not record into the loop.

I'm sure the possibilities are endless, but having the flexibility to tinker and build your own workflow is super neat.

fido··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
I hear you. My current strategy, unfortunately, is to buy a new MBP, sell it at exactly 23 months so that I can advertise "over 1 year left of Apple Care".
fido··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2015)
Stripe | Developer Support | San Francisco or Remote (US/Europe/APAC) | FT/PT | https://stripe.com/jobs/positions/developer-support

Developer Support at Stripe is full service. We are persistent at solving problems for engineers from a multitude of backgrounds. We interact with users primarily through email and IRC, teaching them the primitives powering our APIs and guiding them to a complete integration, built specifically for their needs. Having worked with a bunch of programming languages and services, we understand the fundamentals of programming incredibly well and eagerly jump into others' code no matter how unfamiliar things seem at first glance.

We're currently looking for people based in the US, Europe, and APAC -- full-time or part-time. If you enjoy hacking on code and are a fast researcher, strong writer, and enthusiastic about helping others build mission-critical products with Stripe, we want to talk.

You can read more about Developer Support, and apply directly at https://stripe.com/jobs/positions/developer-support. Please include pointers to projects of which you are particularly proud, links to technical posts you've written, your GitHub profile, and any other background you think would be relevant.

fido··on Show HN: tunes.io - a new playlist of great songs every day. my weekend project
Really cool. Aside from any design/features/etc, I've found a few awesome bands. I did have to write them down for later, but no big deal. Thanks!
fido··on Sworly is Pinterest for audiophiles
This is pretty cool. What about a sidebar with a queue? I would love to load a playlist or collection then get back to work.
fido··on Show HN: Tired of entering map directions on iPhone? I've streamlined it
My first thought is to use this on vacation. Let's say I go to San Diego... I enter in the hotel, the zoo, ocean beach, little italy, la jolla, etc. Then, as I randomly explore the area, I click from current location to any spot I've already entered. I LOVE this.

My most common words on vacation are "How in the hell do I get back to the hotel".

fido··on Show HN: Facebook response to Lovestagram. Our Valentine's weekend project.
Nice!! Good job Michael and Eric!! I just scored a few much needed extra points with Stephanie. (Much needed because I took her to see "The Grey" last night.)

*Note to self. When faced with "The Vow", and "The Grey" on night before Valentines, choose "The Vow".

fido··on Show HN: Arduino guitar foot pedal controls shipping at Thanks Machine
I guess I could have tried that, but this seems like more fun to me.
fido··on Raven - a Mac site-specific web browser
The side pane for history, bookmarks, downloads, etc is so awesome! I really wish I could do this in Chrome...

Basically, I love the left side of Raven. I don't like the tabs and address bar...

fido··on Tracking Calls Through Virtual Phone Numbers?
I've solved this and more with www.getvolta.com. We are a lightweight CRM for companies that rely on the phone.

Our outbound stuff is more advanced, but our inbound is simple. Simply change the phone number on your site with a bit of javascript and you're done. That javascript rotates through a bunch of your phone numbers that we give you, tracks referrers, search queries, etc.

When the phone rings you can have a callerid screen that instantly displays all the above plus history of conversations with that person.

We also allow the person who answered the phone to enter a numeric value after each call. Then, you can see ROI for all the various marketing efforts.

Contact me privately if you're interested in learning more. We are still private, but opening up very soon.

fido··on Tell HN: Room open in Hacker House in San Jose
All of these people are awesome and $1100 is cheap to live with them!! Great place!
fido··on Google In-App Payments for the web
Things I don't want: 1. Google branding my checkout process 2. Forcing MY users (who already created an account with me) to create a Google Checkout account. 3. Auto checking a "news and special offers" box to send my users email

Also, is there a support phone number anywhere?

fido··on How to easily delete your online accounts
Really? Tiny Adsense ads in the "instructions" area to fool us??
fido··on 500 Startups Adds 21 New Companies
Thanks! I'll be accepting users later this month. Send a message to patrick at getvolta and I'll be in touch.
fido··on Where Did Groupon’s Billion Dollars (Series G) Go?
He didn't get shafted; he still owns a very significant portion of the business. He simply didn't take as much out with this round as others may have. He will have his payday, and it will make these others seem like chump change...
fido··on AnyLeaf (YC S10) — Putting an End to the Old Supermarket Circular
I just signed up and was bombarded with Chef Boyardee, Kraft Mac/Cheese, Oscar Mayer injected/processed meats, etc.

I'm a price-sensitive Whole Foods and Trader Joe's shopper in Palo Alto/Mountain view and would love to have great sale notifications from these locations.

Also, most of my friends are the same way. Food at these locations is expensive and we aren't super wealthy so pricing is really painful sometimes.

Either way, great job. I love the site/app/idea and this space is ready for an idea like yours. Cheers!

fido··on Stealth Payment Startup Stripe Backed By PayPal Founders
Thanks for pointing this out! This needs a lot more attention IMO! The PCI verbage is "store, process, or transmit", which means that if you host a payment form on your site, you are on the hook for SAQ-D.
fido··on How To Find Awesome Startup Roommates
My guess is that this applies to property owners/landlords looking for tenants. The article talks about finding roommates, which I'm pretty sure is ok to pick and choose...
fido··on Tell HN: I quit my job to bootstrap my startup by myself.
I strongly disagree. I recently moved out of Austin to pursue my startup in San Francisco. In my first week here I met countless startups, made some REAL connections, sat in a conference room (and got amazing feedback on my product) for hours with a legendary entrepreneur that everyone here has heard of, ate amazing food, etc etc.

I made more forward progress here in one week than I did in the last year in Austin.

The vibe here is insane and people are genuinely willing to help founders who are just starting out. Forget about stretching your money "a bit further" with mom and dad. Get out here ASAP...

BTW, I currently live in SOMA and pay about $900/month to live with 2 really cool guys who work at startups.

fido··on Instructure Launches To Root Blackboard Out Of Universities
I think any serious competitor is going to have a hard time since Blackboard has been known to sue on their ridiculous patents... their legal history is sickening...

fido··on Two Startup Guys Looking for a New Roommate in SF
I was just about to post here looking for roommates! I have already purchased a one-way ticket to SF for February 3rd. My plan was to use Airbnb for a few days until I found a place, but maybe we'll hit it off??

I recently moved out of Austin, and I'm working on a cool new telephony startup. I'll send you a message via your site.

fido··on Digg Founder Kevin Rose Launches Private Newsletter Called Foundation
Was I the only one a little disappointed to see Dorsey/Twitter? Since I heard about the project many months ago, I was really hoping that the content would be more geared towards smaller upstarts. Small SAAS companies, bootstrapped companies, single-founder hackers, etc...

I'm tired of hearing from all the "stars". I want to listen to interviews with normal hackers like myself who are either struggling to find themselves online or starting to experience a bit of success.

I want to hear from people who are building small online businesses - charging money. I'm so burnt out on social/advertising/big exit plays.

fido··on Yesterday I had this crazy idea: People pay me $15, I make them a web design
viral/discount/link juice - Offer a $5 discount for anyone who tweets/blogs your site
fido··on Appointment Reminder Launches
AMEN!

You built a ton of value into your product and should not sell it for peanuts. Real businesses pay real money for products and tend to be better customers than those who want it for a "few bucks a month".

fido··on Does this tiered SAAS pricing model offend you?
I really like the way you view this, and I think the picodollar pricing on tarsnap is fantastic. I just don't know if I have the guts/resources to attempt this!:)

My product requires deep integration inside of other people's software - ecommerce, saas, etc. The majority of customer support will be on the front-end. I'm a two man shop and not able to handle a large support load of customers who haven't paid real money.

Do you encounter this at all?

fido··on Does this tiered SAAS pricing model offend you?
Yes this does seem to be a popular choice. From a business standpoint, I like that the extra revenue flows in at the front end of the tier.

With this model, how will you do upgrades/downgrades? Would you prorate the portion of the month on the old plan + the prorated portion of the new plan? Then, continue charging on the new plan the following month?

fido··on Does this tiered SAAS pricing model offend you?
Hey my app is actually a telephony app too! I didn't mention the per minute stuff in my post because I have to charge for the minutes regardless.

In your second example, what would you do with a user who only used 100 minutes? Will you rollover their unused minutes or is it "use it or lose it"?

fido··on A couple of simple design tips to Google.com
I really don't like the blue arrows... All this does is keep the page from going "below the fold" (a $$ decision?). I use the keyboard to browse, and I expect the down arrow to move the page lower to reveal results 5-10.

* If you are logged in, you can turn these arrows off by disabling Google Instant.

* You can also toggle this functionality by pressing tab

fido··on Ask HN: Best place to start in San Francisco?
I'm in the process of moving from Austin->San Francisco and I've been using PadMapper to see apartments per neighborhood. Once I find a place I think is cool, I click over to google maps and "explore" a bit with street view. Incredibly useful...

I also use google maps to check transit times on Caltrain to various SV locations. Include times from apartment -> transit stops -> final location, etc etc to get a good feel for total travel time to events/meetings.

Good luck!

fido··on Rely your web startup on Rackspace Cloud? Think again
Rackspace (and others) need to call their clients on the phone in these situations. They feel it is so important that it must be taken care of in one hour, yet they use email. Not exactly fair to the client....
