fierro··on Thoughts on Seed Oil
I think about it like this - seed oils are in nearly all processed foods. Read the labels of anything in your house that's in a bag, or will not expire in the next week. 95% chance there is sunflower/canola/safflower/sesame seed oil in it.

By avoiding seed oils, you tend to eat more whole foods. It's not an awful cue to pay attention to.

fierro··on Thoughts on Seed Oil
if the seed oils in Cheetos are not the problem, what is it? the flour?
fierro··on An FDA approved device offers a new treatment for tinnitus
anecdote for anyone else reading about Covid related tinnitus - I've had hearing damage related tinnitus for a decade. Got Covid in April '22 which caused my existing tinnitus to 2-3x in severity, lasting a couple months before it either reverted to baseline or I got used to the new normal. Very scary experience. The CEO of Texas Roadhouse famously committed suicide due in part to severe post-Covid tinnitus.

For anyone struggling to cope with Tinnitus out there, one thing that has helped me immensely is Zen meditation. Doesn't make it go away, but builds up a control over attention with which you can cope much better.

fierro··on U.S. imposes first-ever national drinking water limits on PFAS
where did you get testing done?
fierro··on S3 is files, but not a filesystem
it's well known and not debatable that Cinnabon is fire
fierro··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident
this is more plausible to me

>The one service token and three accounts were not rotated because mistakenly it was believed they were unused.

This odd to me - unused credentials should probably be deleted, not rotated.

fierro··on Launch HN: Escape (YC W23) – Discover and secure all your APIs
congrats! Really crisp idea, excited to try this out
fierro··on Show HN: Open-source x64 and Arm GitHub runners
didn't see any mention of caching in the docs. This tends to be pretty important for fast build/CI at many different key points of a given workflow (dependency cache, build cache, docker layer cache, image cache, etc). Wondering if I missed something.
fierro··on LoRA from scratch: implementation for LLM finetuning
we have no theories of intelligence. We're like people in the 1500s trying to figure out why and how people get sick, with no concept of bacteria, germs, transmission, etc
fierro··on Ask HN: Are you using SQLite and Litestream in production?
using it for an internal Golinks service
fierro··on Go Testing by Example [video]
dang. Only thing I've found so far is a `mysqldump --no-data` and then a restore from dump. Not fast at all. Maybe you could pre-provision a few thousand DBs this way in parallel and write a service to hand out DB handles...
fierro··on Go Testing by Example [video]
pgtestdb looks great. Looks like it leverages Postgres template DBs. We use MySQL more often than Postgres; I may take a stab at creating something similar for MySQL. Nicely done!
fierro··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
what is the neurovascular conflict?
fierro··on River: A fast, robust job queue for Go and Postgres
that's pretty fundamentally different, no? One requires you to build a distributed system with >1 components leveraging GCP tasks APIs. The second is just a library do some book keeping inside your main datastore.
fierro··on AWS us-east-1 down
anyone have a link to the AWS summary / postmortem? Saw it on their status page the other day, but can not find it anywhere now.
fierro··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2023)
very cool product :)

Column is the first and only nationally chartered bank built from the ground up. We build APIs to create bank accounts, send and receive money (wire/ACH/check/SWIFT), administer loans, etc. In contrast to other software providers in the space who interface with banks, we are the bank, building and owning the full payments stack in-house.

Think of us as the bottom layer of the financial infrastructure stack, offering atomic and flexible building blocks for developing financial products in an efficient and compliant way.

We are a small, tight knit team of engineers supporting complex customers and moving billions of dollars.

Looking for motivated infrastructure/backend engineers who seek a high degree of ownership. Apply at the link above, or email me directly at mitch@column.com

Good luck with your job search :)

fierro··on Ask HN: Lots of AWS credits expiring soon, ideas?
buy reserved ec2 or rds capacity
fierro··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
I agree; there many odd writing choices. For example, this is a very confusing end to the first sentence:

> to pay unshared attention to our mission

...unshared attention?

go deep enough down the rabbithole of a hobby/topic, and you find the passionate crazies
fierro··on Low Carb Intake Linked to Insulin Resistance
it's so fascinating when health/fitness discussions crop up on HN. absolutely not gatekeeping, but just observing that compared to the technical topics, there is sooo much more disagreement while at the same time, more conviction. Seems like people really believe they know what they are talking about, whereas when it comes to the technical discussions, the tone seems more curious/introspective vs. dogmatic.
fierro··on Low Carb Intake Linked to Insulin Resistance
idk man, go look at the fasting glucose of anyone on keto and it's probably going to be below 90. Not sure where this claim is coming from. There's hundreds of thousands of people currently having success with low carb diets that can stick a CGM in their arm and show you this is just not true for them.
fierro··on We updated our RSA SSH host key
it doesn't take a state actor to MITM this. It takes a Wifi Pineapple advertising a fake AP and tired devs in Blue Bottle smashing `ssh-keygen -R github.com` without verifying the fingerprint. Very simple. Even easier than trying to MITM a site accessed via browser, which will probably have at least HSTS to help you out.
fierro··on We updated our RSA SSH host key
You could literally go grab a Wifi Pineapple, sit in a Starbucks in SF, and MITM Github for anyone waking up and blindly running `ssh-keygen -R github.com`.

Very opportune time for hackers to try this, since few are probably verifying the fingerprint.

fierro··on When can two TCP sockets share a local address?
for sure, gauging your audience is difficult. Still, any piece of writing benefits from a good framing. Great post, but I think jumping right into the details loses X% of potential readers. Keep up the good work :)
fierro··on When can two TCP sockets share a local address?
agreed, the post is missing a clear explanation of what defines a TCP connection
fierro··on Anki-fy your life
you could integrate a Zettelkasten workflow with Anki. Just send over certain ZK notes into Anki. I'm working on this -- a vim based ZK tool with ability to send over notes to Anki.
fierro··on Rippling raises $500M in emergency funds after SVB fails
totally agree. nice take.
fierro··on Launch HN: EdgeBit (YC W23) – live software vulnerability analysis
