filereaper··on Google: Don't make "bite-sized" content for LLMs
>Google says creating for people rather than robots is the best long-term strategy.

Robots for thee but not for me.

filereaper··on Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling
As a Canadian, we should work on improving our productivity and incorporate more automation and tooling. Whatever impacts our GDP in times of tariffs and economic uncertainty.

Not collectively waste time on the useless debates on how to spell things.

filereaper··on llamafile: Distribute and Run LLMs with a Single File
Llamafile did great work on improving cpu inferencing and generosly upstreamed it into llama.cpp

Wonderful project, please check it out.

filereaper··on It's better to be rich than right
There's almost an underlying assumption that taxpayers will bail you out, or you that you won't go to jail for all these securities frauds, or miscalculating risk on pension funds assets is okay.

Rip away all these away and the Emperor is called out to be naked very quickly.

filereaper··on Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP
We've just started to roll out our MCP Servers and if Anthropic and the community has already moved on, we'll wait till all this churn subsides till switching over next time.
filereaper··on Omarchy Is Out
I would also like to recommend Aerospace which is closer to i3 on Linux:

filereaper··on Deskflow by Synergy's Symless Team. Wayland Supported Now
Adds support for Wayland with its latest release.

It also supports the downstream forks of lan-mouse and input-leap.

filereaper··on Cable companies ask 5th Circuit to block FTC's click-to-cancel rule
Not so sure about the 9-1-1 point.

>"All wireless phones, even those that are not subscribed to or supported by a specific carrier, can call 911. However, calls to 911 on phones without active service do not deliver the caller’s location to the 911 call center, and the call center cannot call these phones back to find out the caller’s location or the nature of the emergency. If disconnected, the 911 center has no way to call back the caller."

Seems they're deliberately distorting their responsibilities.

filereaper··on IntelliJ IDEs supports Wayland now
I'm in the same boat.
filereaper··on IntelliJ IDEs supports Wayland now
Barrier was abandoned and no contributions are made IIRC.
filereaper··on IntelliJ IDEs supports Wayland now
Total aside.

Has anyone found an alternative to Synergy? Its the last thing that's anchoring me to X11.

The Synergy team has been saying for years they'll support Wayland but no release has been made, I'm a paid customer.

filereaper··on GE Aerospace Successfully Develops and Tests New Hypersonic Dual-Mode Ramjet
Genuinely trying to understand.

Didn't the SR71 fly between LA and NY at above supersonic speeds? Don't military jets fly at supersonic speeds above land?

What makes this allowable in terms of sonic booms? Is it that they're much smaller and the their booms don't cause as much of a "wake" on the ground?

filereaper··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
Oh awesome, thank you for suggesting this. Will swap out AutoFocus for AutoRaise.
filereaper··on Euro banks worry AI will increase their dependence on US big tech
The European Politician would have to introspect and answer exactly how it is that they add value.

All they can do is enact regulations and decrees in a centralized way like the former USSR.

Also as a entrepreneur in Europe, what incentives are there to create anything. There's the existing crippling regulations, employment laws are tough to try things out and just go bust, and at the end of it all if you're successful, the taxes remove whatever gains you should rightfully get for jumping through all these hoops.

All you have now are $200k designer bag manufacturers because of legacy.

I hope to god they do whatever is needed to keep ASML and the like competitive.

filereaper··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
I use AutoFocus which gives focus-follows-mouse with AeroSpace and its a good enough replacement for i3wm.

Extremely thankful for both projects.

filereaper··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
Yup there's AutoFocus which I use daily with Aerospace

filereaper··on Hyundai Ioniq EV battery replacement costs $60k, more than new car
This smells like insurance scam from the "independent" dealership.

Now all three parties, the dealer, manufacturer and insurance are pointing fingers.

Good on the owner to have brought this to the media.

filereaper··on Podman Desktop 1.6 released: Even more Kubernetes and Containers features
Podman is still considered experimental with KinD clusters.

I wish more efforts were spent getting better integration with KinD clusters as they're much easier to spinup and work with.

filereaper··on JSONB has landed
JSONB has performance implications, many of you here are likely familiar with JSONB in Postgres.

I encourage you to view this talk from PGConf NYC 2021 - Understanding of Jsonb Performance by Oleg Bartunov [1]

Looking forward to a similar talk from the SQLite community on JSONB performance in the future.

filereaper··on Amazon cuts 'several hundred' jobs in Alexa division
Welp I never managed to get my Gen 2 Echo Dot to pair with my Wifi.

Did all kinds of debugging but after an hour I just packed it back in its box and put it away.

Google stuff "just worked", never had to wrestle with it to such an extent.

filereaper··on Microsoft launches Windows App for accessing PCs in the cloud from any device
Haven't used it, but multiple monitor support is really a nice feature.
filereaper··on FTC Chair Lina Khan looks for allies and leads in Silicon Valley charm offensive
>She’s also ineffective.

In this recent podcast, Lina Khan explicitly mentions deterrence as a tool in FTC's arsenal and the overall recent setbacks.

I do think that getting companies worth $1T to behave is going to take multiple attempts and here we give lots of leeway to Founders and others to iterate and refine.

I would like to give Lina Khan the same chances to iterate and refine as I very strongly support the grand parents views of how important this is to innovation and for startups.

filereaper··on KDE desktop cube effect returns
Sort of related but if anyone wants to step into a time-machine when Compiz/Beryl were the eyecandy there's this video from 17 years ago...

https://youtu.be/lawkc3jH3ws?si=l6yu98DEnSxdZFRu

filereaper··on KDE desktop cube effect returns
Same, 10 split over 3 monitors using the keypad to switch them independently on each monitor.

I've gotten so used to it that muscle memory kicks in inadvertently for other desktop environments.

filereaper··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
Yeah that's exactly right.

I was only aware of the Canada/UK version and was caught off guard when used on a colleague that used "redgEEnuh" for their name.

filereaper··on Ken Mattingly, astronaut scrubbed from Apollo 13, has died
Wow, that's a good excuse to go rewatch the series :)

I'd say the first two seasons were more focused on the Space Race between USSR and the USA.

The writing in the third season has fallen off with some absurd scenarios with trained professional astronauts, and frankly lots of drama and less about the overall mission.

I do love the show but wish they'd focus more on hypothetical science and space related aspects and less interpersonal drama :(

filereaper··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
This is a very interesting site.

I took the name "Regina" as an example as its pronounced very differently between Canada/UK and US.

If you toggle through the site's region selectors it does indeed produce videos with the regionally correct pronouciation. (Admittedly I had a sample size of N=1 video each)

So yeah, its a great start!

filereaper··on Slack's Google Drive App can share your private Docs and Drive files
The title feels wrong and might cause panic.

A preview picture of the documents first page is shared whether the user has permissions or not.

The entire document is not shared like what the title seems to suggest.

For sensitive documents, this can certainly be a leak but its not outright sharing in a traditional sense.

filereaper··on Canada plans to regulate search and social media use of AI
I strongly encourage watching Bill Gurley's talk from the All-In Summit about whenever Government gets involved with regulations and technology.
