Hello, PHASEONE10841 here. Ask me anything

finchisko··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows

finchisko··on Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era
Wait, isn't it how Skynet started?
finchisko··on RFC: Storybook Design Token Addon
I'm working on free addon for storybook. It would enable designers and develepors to quickly review which design tokens from your collection is used in a particular component. Initially I will only support css modules and theme file where all your design token lives. I would like to hear from you, if there is any interest in something like this... Feedback is welcome. Project is in early stage.
finchisko··on The state of Schleswig-Holstein is consistently relying on open source
I really don’t get why there’s always this group of people who feel the need to constantly manage everything for others—like sysadmins, for example. Sure, there are valid scenarios where management makes sense, like printing or shared drives, but most of the stuff is just over the top. As a developer, I’m sick of all the constant restrictions—broken VPNs, stealth monitoring, and antivirus software that slows everything down. These "security measures" are supposed to help, but they just kill performance and cause frustration. At the end of the day, I just want my system to work smoothly without constant interference.
finchisko··on Project Code Rush (Documentary): Does History Repeats with AI? [video]
Project Code Rush documents Netscape’s move to open source and the birth of Mozilla during the first internet boom. The dynamics compared to today’s AI surge were different—commercial web vs. an AI arms race—but the pressure, rapid iteration, stock-driven hype, and “new-tech gold rush” energy feel familiar.
finchisko··on Show HN: Macscope – I decide to built a better Cmd-Tab replacement for macOS
does it display minimized apps as default macos switcher? that bothers me to degree i would pay for substitute.
finchisko··on NPM stylus package contained malicious code and was removed from the registry
Colleague of mine. Pointed out that github advisory had many new malware reports in last few days. All looking same.

Looks suspicious if you ask me. Maybe somebody hacked the github advisory db?

finchisko··on Show HN: Firefox from Ramdisk (macOS Only)
The reason I created this was because I missed the profile sync daemons commonly found in Linux. I haven’t looked into this specific one, but most available solutions are Linux-only.
finchisko··on The masters of Commodore 64 games
Oh this bring back memories. As during communist era, there were no extra money or even stores where to buy. So we copied casettes. First load game then save on blank cassete. This worked for almost all games, but one. That one instead of waiting for run or save command, started game immediately. So only way to copy was using double decker. But most of double deckers were shitty. Adding so much noise, that copy didn’t work. I remember visiting one friend that has high quality deck, that was able to make a workable copy.
finchisko··on Ask HN: Confused about how DeepSeek hurts Nvidia
I'm not stock expert (but bought 80 shares of Nvidia yesterday). My rationale is, that if DeepSeek lowered barier for entry into AI model development, actually more companies can afford to join. Yes, big dogs may require less cards with efficient algorithms, but to me, more companies = more cards needed.
finchisko··on Show HN: Sava OS – A desktop interface for your web browser
it would be cool. to sava be able open two cloud disk providers side by side and copy files from one to other.
finchisko··on I designed a Dieter Rams-inspired iPhone dock
Can it have rubbery grip, or silicone instead of plastic? Sorry I asked, before asking Google.
finchisko··on What happened to Captura? OSS maintainer burnout (2023)
I recently switced to Captura from from ActiveScreen recorded and I love it. Didn’t observe any bugs at all. Great piece of sw.
finchisko··on Inkscape 1.3
which version of designer have it? i didn’t upgrade to latest yet.
finchisko··on Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro/Air users, how is it going?
I have M1 Air with 16 gigs of RAM. This is my 3rd Air in row. I had even one with the crapy butterfly keyboard. But this M1 is beast from another realm. For my daily development I have to use PC with 11gen Intel i5. But sometimes I pull work to this Air aswell. Always suprised how much faster the compilation step is. Basically instant for this project. Presing Enter and bum code compiled. On PC i have to wait several seconds, up to 10.
finchisko··on Actual is going open-source
Thanks. Sure, I had own domain for a year, made promotion on Facebook. This product was not developed with other countries in mind. Idea was to do pilot in my own country and then scale up. Every country has different invoicing rules, so it cannot be just translated to English and put on US market. But since it didn't attract any single customer, I just gave up as my previous experience was that adding features when there is no traction for MVP just prolong your suffering.
finchisko··on Actual is going open-source
I feel your frustration about business not going as envisioned. My current failure rate is two failed attempts to build profitable busines. Actually the second project is similar to yours. Invoice app for small entrepreneurs. Till today I'm the only user of the app. To reduce costs, I made it run completely without server support, all data is stored in local storage and hosted on netlify for free (no own domain). https://moja--fakturazdarma.netlify.app/. It was nice challenge for me to make it work completely without any backend (generation of pdfs using pdfmake, generating qrcodes and lzma compression ...) I still use it for main own invoicing and use to in my resume as work reference, but with zero money income.
finchisko··on DaVinci Resolve 18
The only problem with DaVinci on Linux was no builin mp4 codec. So you had the convert mp4 videos to some format and only then you could use it in DaVinci. Windows nor macOS version doesn't had this limitation. It was DaVinci 15 or 16. Not sure if this changed already.
finchisko··on Why not hire part-time developers?
I would never hire part-time developer once again. I did once and burned heavily. That guy had own startup. For few months it worked to some degree (because he was hungry for cash). But afterwhile, his mind and focus was back to his own startup. Hi performance dropped significantly and he just use us to fund his business and used our hardware to test his app.
finchisko··on Firefox is the alternative to a Chrome hegemony
the difference is the distribution channel. For cordova you still need to use Apple store and pay yearly and share your income with Apple. With PWA, the distribution channel is web, so no commissions for Apple.
finchisko··on Prince of Persia open-source port based on the DOS version disassembly
Wondering if there is possibility having wasm port running game in the browser would be great.
finchisko··on Germany wants smartphone makers to offer 7 years of software updates
For me, the good compromise for start would be 3 devices per year per maker to have this prolonged support.

Probably I'm native, but also wonder, why there is no single manufacturer that offers payed updates after product EOL. Like subscription service, canonical is offering after LTS release is EOL.

finchisko··on Microsoft Edge Used More Than Firefox
Sure, but what exactly chrome like dev tool are you missing in FF? Recently I was looking for Code Coverage reports, which FF lacks, but still prefer FF over chrome.
finchisko··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
In my experience base level items have much better resale value then more expensive items. It's true for notebooks, graphic cards and cars too. For example my iPhone 11 Pro has fallen to half of the price in one year, but entry level iPhone 11 probably has still 70% of its value. Same for Macbook Air, entry level with 8GB and 256 SSD will hold value better then maxed out one. Same with cars, extra premium equipment has basically no value for people that are buying used cars. So doubt that premium graphic cards are exception. Their value falls sharply over time, so not sure people buying them are considering resale value as argument to buy them.
finchisko··on The Nokia N900: the future that wasn’t
Still have this little linux phone. It missed compass hw, so map experience was not great and also resistive display was inferior to iPhone, but still loved it. It's bad Nokia didn't manage it create viable platform, but rather switched to Windows phones and also died there with broken teeth.
finchisko··on Why are so many successful founding CEOs software engineers?
I think, that is the power of word "many". If the claim was "1% of all CEOs are sw engineers", it wouldn't be that impressive, even though 1% may be actually quite lot of people (many). :)
finchisko··on Google’s FLoC Is a Terrible Idea
How will browser behave, when you combine no-store and no-cache in a single header?
finchisko··on M1 MacBook Air hits 900 GFlops in the browser with Safari's experimental WebGPU
Well my Samsung (now HP) does not. No drivers from HP, nor Apple.
