fireattack··on YouTube is now building its own video-transcoding chips
The complement of "building its own video-transcoding chips " isn't just software encoding though. Google/Youtube could have already been using hardware encodings, just with generic GPUs or whatever existing hardware.
fireattack··on .org doesn't mean credible
Interestingly burrito.catering used to be a thing it looks: https://web.archive.org/web/20180804010349/http://burrito.ca...
fireattack··on Back in 1993, I was taking a number theory class
Just curious, could you just put the address for Finder into that hook instead of the auxiliary program? Or even better, just put the main MPQS program?
fireattack··on Verizon Sells AOL and Yahoo to Apollo for $5B
>A headline with 5G but not a single mention of it in the article.

There is.

>He added that Apollo would allow the business to grow, a more difficult prospect when it was operating within Verizon, which was planning to spend even more money to expand its next-generation 5G wireless network.

fireattack··on Don't make customers hunt for the Sign In button on your website
Seriously. I honestly don't mind to have "sign up" being more prominent, but see very little reason why they go further and hide login button..
fireattack··on Why are there so many Canadians in India?
But Canada mainly uses letter instead of A4 IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong, not Canadian myself).
fireattack··on Green gold: Avocado farming on the rise in Africa
Downvoting pattern on HN is the weirdest thing, even weirder than Reddit sometimes.

I can feel what kind of the comments will be downvoted but can't pin down why. The best I can come up with is that certain comment will be downvoted when the "mood" (not even narrative) of it doesn't fit with the others.

fireattack··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
I think junk food place in general is actually more hygienic.
fireattack··on Daisugi, the 600-year-old Japanese technique of growing trees out of other trees
It seems to require a lot more effort than traditional lumber and can't really be mass produced. I doubt the output/input ratio (whatever you consider as the input: man-hour, monetary cost, carbon footprint) is any better either.

In other words, I think it's more like a luxury, and I won't call luxury items "sustainable".

fireattack··on Daisugi, the 600-year-old Japanese technique of growing trees out of other trees
The technique is definitely cool, but can it really be called "sustainable"?
fireattack··on Calibre – E-Book Management
Similarly, I primarily use calibre-debug CLI to extract resources from ebook.
fireattack··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
Just curious, why not just show numpad/pattern input all the time then?
fireattack··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
Still sounds weird to me. I use an Android phone, I can unlock my phone at anytime using either face, fingerprint, or passcode.

What exactly is the reason/rationale that it has to fail on facial recognition first before proceeding to use passcode?

fireattack··on Investigating why McDonald's ice cream machines are often broken [video]
I always thought the meme/joke is more about McFlurry than your standard ice cream.

I personally never encounter ice cream machine broken either.

fireattack··on Amtrak's 2035 map has people talking about the future of U.S. train travel
Agreed.

However, I think there is another issue in the US: last mile transit.

Even if the US magically have the rail system similar to China today, using it in cities like Houston etc. that has poor public transit would still be a pain in the ass in practice.

fireattack··on Get better at Googling
If date info is critical in your search, I suggest to use the Tools->Custom range instead of `before:`/`after:`.

They are almost identical but if you use Tools one, it shows the date of each search results directly on listing, which is very helpful.

fireattack··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
So ARM nowadays is just straightly better than x86?
fireattack··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
I was always taught ARM (and M1), being a RISC architecture, isn't as "capable" as x86 in some way, whatever it means.

I am no longer sure if that's still the case, since they seem to work just as good, if not better (energy efficiency). Of course, it's not exactly an apple to apple comparison since Apple upgraded so many other things, but I just didn't see any mention about the limitation of being RISC in these articles.

Could someone enlighten in this respect for an average Joe who knows nothing about hardware?

fireattack··on Explaining 4K 60Hz Video Through USB-C Hub (2019)
But does it have the problem GP is describing?

If not, I'd say it's definitely better than his/her MacBook Pro since they're at least functioning.

fireattack··on A curated list of JavaScript tooling not written in JavaScript
The article is directly mentioned in OP's link.

BTW, that scrollbar though..

fireattack··on The “Granny Knot”
I honestly never find that folding technique better than just.. fold it thrice using the exactly same three folding lines:

https://i.imgur.com/CRxFYwS.png

The end result is identical, not really slower, it's easier to adjust the "proportion' during the process, and it works better with long sleeves with minor adjustment.

fireattack··on Content-aware image resizing in JavaScript
Totally unrelated to this great project, but I'm curious: do people really use content-aware resizing feature in practice?

I use Photoshop frequently, and I use content-aware removal A LOT (super handy). But it never occured to me, not even once, that I need to use the content-aware resizing despite it's there for years. If I really need to change the ratio of an image/photo I usually just crop.

fireattack··on Princeton admits record-low 3.98% of applicants
Personally I think absolute number of admitted students is a more useful metric, since you can't really control how many people apply, and your capacity is more or less fixed.

From the graph in the article, that is also in decline, but not as sharp (except the outlier of this year, which is caused by other factors).

fireattack··on Yamauchi No.10 Family Office
Sound is default on here (it does need some time to load, though).
fireattack··on Yamauchi No.10 Family Office
It must be something Mac specific.

It runs very smoothly on Chrome + Windows with a dated computer.

fireattack··on Is It Pokemon or Big Data?
I mean seahorse is actually easy. I knew it can't be Pokemon because it's a real animal.
fireattack··on Is Netflix's Seaspiracy film right about fishing damaging oceans?
I think there is a fundamental difference between the two groups about how much simplification/inaccuracy can be accepted.

The TV producer would take 90% fact, 5% oversimplification, and even 5% misleading info all day every day.

The experts probably won't accept that. This is not to say they are unable to simplify things (which as you said, is a very crucial skill on its own) if asked, they just won't go ahead and actively publish anything that way.

I personally side with TV producers here as soon as they have good intention. But can see why other people think otherwise.

fireattack··on Is Netflix's Seaspiracy film right about fishing damaging oceans?
I can see both sides. I appreciate these documentaries for raising awareness as you said.

The reason why experts don't "try to explain it to us" probably is exactly because they think it's complex and nuanced. They probably don't even think there is an "issue" that need to be explained to begin with.

Think it this way: you're in a field, and you know its pros and cons. You are not going to randomly speak anything about it because that's just.. like everything else in the world. Now, suddenly someone, likely an "outsider", wrote an article to describe the field/area in a certain one-sided way (good or bad). Of course you now suddenly have a strong opinion on it.

Note: above is about the common question I saw "why these experts only appear to refute others but never explain the thing themselves", not about Seaspiracy in particular.

fireattack··on Archive Team: A Smattering of Tweets
Does anyone test its completeness, especially for the older date?

Also, i can't seem to be able to download the actual data (only the matadata), it says "Files marked with [lock icon] are not available for download." at https://archive.org/download/archiveteam_twitter_20210316071....

fireattack··on Streaming subtitled box sets is the new Eurovision
What is "high-bro sphere"? I googled and didn't find anything.
