firsttimebigboy··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
I don't have to imagine that
firsttimebigboy··on Effective Spaced Repetition
probably depends on the type of material too. if it's purely memorization (e.g., I'm learning spanish as an english speaker) then there's probably no difference. If it involves any sort of understanding then I'd be very surprised if there was no difference, at least in speed of learning
firsttimebigboy··on Effective Spaced Repetition
you can do that in anki, just not by default.
firsttimebigboy··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
of course it would be ideal if everyone could be reasonable and not abuse these processes, but that's obviously not the case. So the decisions seems to come down to maybe having new ugly buildings vs having no new buildings. I think people that need somewhere to live would choose the new ugly building instead of overpaying for old buildings.
firsttimebigboy··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
correlation != causation.

Also, the residents were probably interested in increased property values, just like all home owners are.

firsttimebigboy··on What is REM sleep and why is it important?
>ultra distance races

yeah of course there's an optimum amount of exercise before it becomes more harmful than helpful. training for ultra distance races definitely sounds like pushing the limits of human capabilities, which means you're probably trading off other parts of your life to make it happen.

for anyone that doesn't obsess over exercise it's probably almost always a net positive, including for sleep (from personal, anecdotal experience).

firsttimebigboy··on Why 'Atomic Habits' may not be working for you
I feel like I'm in the same state. Hopefully this works for me as well.
firsttimebigboy··on Microsoft “lobotomized” AI-powered Bing Chat, and its fans aren’t happy
the only people responsible for this are whichever execs ordered the filtering/censoring. Getting a chat bot to say "naughty things" was doing no one any harm.
firsttimebigboy··on The myth of the myth of the 10x programmer (2020)
the irony is going to make my head explode
firsttimebigboy··on The myth of the myth of the 10x programmer (2020)
This is rational though. Why would you take someone who's a 10x at their current job and move them to a different job with a completely different set of skill requirements where they might not even be a 1x, and almost certainly won't be a 10x. It's a negative for the developer if they wanted to move into management, but I don't think it has anything to do with management feeling threatened.
firsttimebigboy··on ChatRWKV, like ChatGPT but powered by the RWKV (RNN-based, open) language model
According to wikipedia ChatGPT is built on GPT-3 which has 175B parameters requiring 800GB of memory, so a few 4090s will fall short.
firsttimebigboy··on Do simpler machine learning models exist and how can we find them?
that sounds like a purely political/administrative decision and not a technical restriction. There's plenty of offensive material to be trained from on the internet and language models should have no problem generating offensive material (plenty of stories of twitter trained bots spewing out nazi propagnda)
firsttimebigboy··on We’ve updated our policy to prohibit sharing someone else’s live location
"I actually dislike Musk"

You say that but your other opinions say otherwise. It's obvious to everyone, like a child lying and thinking the adults can't tell.

firsttimebigboy··on Evidence that the evolution of mammals began in the Southern Hemisphere
No, it means when compared on the international stage the American left is no more like the global center-right.

Also, the majority of American citizens don't like the opinions of the democratic party. They works for the corps, not the people.

firsttimebigboy··on Apple 'created decoy labor group' to derail unionization
>I’d much rather deal with management alone than union leadership.

You only say that b/c you've been really lucky/unlucky so far. Either you don't know what dealing with hostile management is like or you've had really shitty unions. Either way most employees benefit greatly from having representation in the workplace rather than having to deal with a dictator alone.

firsttimebigboy··on Deepmind’s AlphaCode conquers coding, performing as well as humans
It also drastically reduces the cost to produce whatever's automated and also creates new opportunities.
firsttimebigboy··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Why did she have to flee her home? No one was after her. Do we even know if she did flee her home or was it just another lie? Seems like a scandal to gain attention.
firsttimebigboy··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
That's not what he said when he bought it lol
firsttimebigboy··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
His children are only tools for him. He only cares about them as long as they provide him value.
firsttimebigboy··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
He doesn't care about his kids. They are just tools when he needs to reference them.
firsttimebigboy··on We’ve updated our policy to prohibit sharing someone else’s live location
Apply the same logic to yourself. You worship the ground Musk walks on and he can do no wrong. Everything he does has a reasonable explanation to you, but if someone else did it then it might not be so reasonable. You have been indoctrinated by a conman and are projecting your psychosis onto other, more reasonable, people.
firsttimebigboy··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
I remember hearing about these types of requests that also have a gag order placed on them so companies can't explicitly inform the public about them. I haven't heard much about that sort of thing lately though. Either very good or very bad.
firsttimebigboy··on It Ruined Everything’: Buy Now, Pay Later Drives Gen Z into Debt
They taught it to us (very briefly) in our Canadian high school, it was part of a mandatory course. I don't remember what it was called but the other thing I remember learning in that class was sex ed stuff.
firsttimebigboy··on Acquisition of chess knowledge in AlphaZero
Maybe they meant the piece type is randomized, because each piece has a different movement rule. This would result in things like maybe 5 pawns and 3 rooks instead of the normal numbers.
firsttimebigboy··on Acquisition of chess knowledge in AlphaZero
AI doesn't even attempt that. All our neural networks do is spit out the final result of whatever it's doing. If we want the "reasoning" for it we have to build different methods of doing that. It's an active field of research but much slower going than improving our AI's directly.
firsttimebigboy··on Acquisition of chess knowledge in AlphaZero
What makes you say that? Everything I've seen says AlphaZero beat SF8 easily: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaZero#Chess_2
