flaunf221··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
It's also within your power to negotiate price of emergency treatment. If they want too much, just turn and walk away. Look for a professional clinic. Firmly stand your ground.

Consider that a lot of people don't have the luxury of just not working until proper work appears. Because they have to pay for housing and food and if they don't have work, they would not be able to.

flaunf221··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
Apple sells 2 TB upgrade to Mac Studio for almost as much as whole Playstation 5 Pro that has 2 TB of storage.

With pricing model that Apple insists on, their console would be laughing stock in terms of storage. (Switch 2 has 256 GB only but it's a) portable, b) has slot for sd express cards.)

flaunf221··on WTF Ubuntu?
Parent comment asked why Ubuntu, I answered why (for me). There was no specifying on how big and what scale of production.

Large enterprise with multiple knowledgeable people on payroll have different concerns than small me.

flaunf221··on WTF Ubuntu?
I'm not a Linux user, but occasionally self-host some stuff. One time I tried Debian instead of Ubuntu, it was a lot of "this is not installed" & "this is not set up" errors during setup process of software I wanted. In the end I succeeded in doing what I wanted, but I also wasted time on doing things I never have to do when using Ubuntu.
flaunf221··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
It's a resin 3d printer. It uses toxic resin, you really don't want it working near humans without proper ventilation setup, you need to wear gloves, will need alcohol for cleaning prints.

And then unless you plan only on printing already prepared models you will need to learn how to user slicer software and maybe learn to model things yourself.

It is a product for enthusiasts by nature of how it works.

flaunf221··on New iPad mini
More like they were not able to find a pretext to sell it for more.

I can open my local store and will see shitty 8/128 Android tablets for less than 150 euro. If memorypocalypse was the main reason for pricing new ipad mini as it is, the budget tablet segment would be completely dead because manufacturers just wouldn't be able to afford memory at all.

flaunf221··on New iPad mini
> The reality: RAM/Chip prices are way, way up. The starter iPad mini is $700.

This has tiny 128 GB of storage and unknown but obviously not too high amount of RAM. At best 16, but probably less.

That's just Apple beeing greedy as usual.

flaunf221··on OBS Studio 33

flaunf221··on OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked
I see now from another comment you thought about denial of service for service that leaked key. And I thought about mass leak resulting in DDOS onto API provider. Wrong guess from me.
flaunf221··on OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked
Not any more than any other public endpoint service exposes. This revocation endpoint can be protected by auth too. Use API key that you're revoking in auth.
flaunf221··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
And I believe it is far less than what could be.

Too many OSS projects die because authors are too afraid to tell demanding users in which direction they could proceed and instead burn out.

flaunf221··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
> best response is to just communicate you are not fixing X

You mean the response that was already written in a previous message and the response user decided to ignore so they can pester more?

flaunf221··on What I self-host
Tried it too, it still had judder as all other clients I've seen. I think it's either server software problem or maybe all clients fail to do this properly.
flaunf221··on What I self-host
> Jellyfin

I wanted to self-host Jellyfin, but hit the problem. It's bad at the main thing that player should offer - media playback.

If you open https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/clients/codec-support/ you can see that this doesn't support HDR and that doesn't support H265. There is Jellyfin Desktop and it breaks when display scaling is over 100% (what year is it?). Some clients have atrocious subtitle support. And then none of them apparently can't properly pace frames so I still see judder as if I'm on 60 Hz screen (24->60 can't be even translation). But my screen can do up to 165 Hz, so that should never be the issue.

In then I just went back to playing media files from Samba share with MPC + madVR. No automation or catalogization or anything, but it is supreme at actually displaying things, and that's what it's important to me.

flaunf221··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
> enjoy the world of the story

I'm not sure that's the case here, because rationalist fanfics tend to instead try to tear down the world as illogical.

Example for Harry Potter and this fanfic. In Harry Potter magical currency is made of precious metals and there are bronze coints, silver coins and gold coins. And they have fixed exchange rate.

"But wait!", notices the rationalist. "Since those coins could theoretically be melted down, and rates for those metals on exchange is different I could make infinite money glitch and crash the economy. Those wizards are so dumb, haha, for thousands of years they never figured out the basic logic."

Congratulations you found an economical inconsistency in a children's book. Your next period is boxing against kindergartners.

In my mind if you were a fan of original work, you would not be doing this. You could find different explanation that does not try to paint the world as stupid. Simplest being https://xkcd.com/1494/

flaunf221··on I turned my unused Kindle into a photo frame with GPT-6 Astra
Reading this causes embarassment from author's helplessness.

> I first tried GPT-5.6 Sol with reasoning effort set to Extra High. It wrote code to connect to the Kindle but couldn't resolve an error that prevented it from storing data on the device. Then I tried Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5, but Anthropic's cybersecurity safeguards blocked each attempt after two prompts. Finally, I tried GPT-6 Astra with reasoning effort set to High. We were able to jailbreak the Kindle.

"We were able to".

It takes a modern AI human and 4 LLMs to do something that could be done by googling "kindle jailbreak" and following instructions - they have to be performed on Kindle anyway.

flaunf221··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
Back in the day 1080 was top of the line. For couple of generations now it's xx90 lineup.

You could say that there was Titan but in practice they were not seriously considered. At least for gaming.

flaunf221··on I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again
I've heard about it. I didn't try to look very deep it. They claim they started from scratch and they still made hjkl.

jkl; would get you movement over home row without moving hand/fingers at all. ijkl would get you movement without involving pinky and some people like that.

If you have (and I do) column-staggered ergonomic keyboard - meaning columns are shifted according for length of your fingers - hjkl makes you move fingers to columns that are slightly off.

I don't see a single objective benefit for choosing hjkl on its own. Yet it's still there and I don't take "they did in vi" as valid for new editor. They could make alternative scheme for vi-comers, but as main idea again?

What you mentioned - g-h and g-l - are definitely more consistent than what vi did.

flaunf221··on I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again
> Everything else has a meaning-based mnemonic, and until I read your post I hadn't ever thought about their position

My point is that position is the primary thing that's important for an editor when used for a long time. Your hands and fingers move in physical space, not over alphabet. They get tired and maybe get repetitive strain injuries over real movement.

Mnemomics way of setting up keyboard layout (or rather typewriter) would be to put everything in alphabet order. But we quickly realized that it's not a good way. `d` is where it is because according to (imperfect) research it's a common letter and so in QWERTY layout this letter should be on your home row.

Putting A-something on `a` because the word starts with `a` is not a long term design. Considerations should be based on usage. How often is this used? Put it closer to home row. Is it designed to be often used with another command? If often, those two probably shouldn't be on single finger. And so on.

There is argument for easier start - except that I said already - modal editors are unusable without reading docs first, so that argument doesn't really hold.

flaunf221··on I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again
Keyboard control schemes annoy me a lot, because most of them can be described as "draft of a potentially good idea that became holy book and engineering was forgotten".

For example - let's put "go all the way to the right" on the left button. And "go all the way to the left on the combo of modifier with right button". I'm talking about 0 and $ (Shift+4) for vi. It's not consistent, it's not ergonomic or easy to input when properly touch typing. It's almost an accidental control scheme because it was based on no longer existing keyboard keycap labels. And in this case where you can't even exit vi without first reading a manual, half an hour reduction in learning time that you get from remembering that `i` is Insert will not compensate for hundreds or thousands hours using later when you will be pressing button not by looking at keyboard but by muscle memory.

flaunf221··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
> Macs manage to make one-handed chords for copy and paste ergonomic

Cmd-C is not any more ergonomic than Ctrl-C. You are only speaking from position of habit. Pressing modifier with tucked in thumb is not great for it.

If someone is concerned about ergonomics, they should buy ergonomic keyboard. Standard layouts are crap.

flaunf221··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
Well, it's bad, but at least it's not Linux or MacOS, so there's some silver lining.
flaunf221··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
This relates to game design, not outside actions.

Also if that's what you believe, players who start after day 1 will not have mystery. Even players who start day 1 but can't dedicate all of their time to the game will inevitably spoil themselves when they have to do anything else, meaning someone will progress farther than they and will share that info.

flaunf221··on Pi 1.0
> And to be honest: what do you even need from a harness\agent for it to have a gui?

Nothing absolute that I couldn't live without. But TUI is essentially a design written for the lowest common denominator. It doesn't matter that I have had high resolution displays for years, average TUI is designed as if I'm using computer older than me.

flaunf221··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Former tech workers can ask for advice from non-tech people who previously had to leave because they could no longer afford rising costs that happened due to influx of well paid IT jobs.
flaunf221··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Gaming consoles are affordable platforms, and Apple is not doing that.

Then to actually have games, Apple would need to make stable tooling and convince developers to port games to their platform. And convince everyone that they will support it and not drop it.

flaunf221··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
"all (my) phones." What other phones could I be talking about? I don't have control over what happens to anyone else.
flaunf221··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
Noone was speaking for you in the first place - my comment started with "I".
flaunf221··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
I would maybe appreciate things like this, if manufactures made phones with solid grip and not by visuals or metrics like thickness measured at thinnest point. But as they are all of them go into bumper cases that hide whatever they have on the back.
