flexagoon··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
The LLM doesn't "think" about those topics any more than the HN database "thought" about them when you posted your comment
flexagoon··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
The Anthropic refusal string was an official documented feature in the Claude API to test refusal scenarios.
flexagoon··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
If you're talking about investment in the usual sense, can't you just buy stocks of solar/clean energy companies?

Otherwise, if you just mean financially supporting solar technology, one good way is donating to political action/lobbying groups like Greenlight America or CATF (though that supports clean energy as a whole, not just solar)

flexagoon··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
An adult who plays Roblox can spend much more money on it than a kid getting some Robux for Christmas
flexagoon··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
Where did you get that from?

> The Simple English Wikipedia is for everyone, such as children and adults who are learning English

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

> Other people may use the Simple English Wikipedia because simple language helps them to understand unfamiliar topics or complex ideas.

flexagoon··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
Note that Pruitt has the highest number of edits on Wikipedia, but not the highest number of created articles.
flexagoon··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Being as detailed as possible is its goal. Simple English Wikipedia exists for shorter easier to read versions of articles. Generally though, turning a complex topic into a fun easy read is the goal of good scientific journalism, which is also important but a separate effort from an encyclopedia.
flexagoon··on Blaise Pascal invented fixed route public transport (2024)
Two things can be true at the same time. Pascal was certainly a prodigy, but he was also largely living off family wealth and could afford to not specialize.
flexagoon··on Birdwatching rewires the brain and slows cognitive decline
> On a side note, the Merlin bird ID app from Cornell University is great.

Do you know how it compares to iNaturalist? I'm not a birdwatcher, but I have iNat on my phone and sometimes use it to identify birds, and it seems to do a great job.

flexagoon··on Removing Next.js Got My Blog to 100 on Every Lighthouse Category
The static export still keeps a large JS bundle which is mostly unnecessary
flexagoon··on Removing Next.js Got My Blog to 100 on Every Lighthouse Category
How is it a wild claim that an optimized plain html site is better for a static blog than a site with a huge redundant JS bundle?
flexagoon··on I refuse to accept a censored Internet. Join Me at FOSDEM 27
"Democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried"
flexagoon··on R/open source bans all solo projects and projects using LLMs
"Numbered throwaway account 24 minutes old, this is a spam wave using residential proxies and dang is banning these accounts as they pop up."

Here, I said the exact same thing with a 5 year old account, does it make it more true to you?

flexagoon··on Bringing uv and ty together
I'm really glad that unlike most other recent acquisitions, OpenAI's acquisition of Astral had seemingly no negative impact on their products
flexagoon··on How does Fable 5.1 hide messages in images?

flexagoon··on mitmproxy adds --emudhra option
Some smart devices pull config files from a server. By mitming that, you can change the config to enable some sort of developer mode on the device.
flexagoon··on MicroG: Free-libre re-implementation of Google's proprietary Android user space
The apps that use Google analytics/ads don't need Google Services on the device. The libraries are embedded into the app, and have just as much fingerprinting capabilities as sandboxes Google services.
flexagoon··on GLP-1 may slow biological aging
Since when is it bad to create technology that gives people an easier way to solve their problems and live a better life?
flexagoon··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
Depends on the question. Most models won't tell you how to make weapons because they're trained not to, but the political stuff is usually blocked on the API level
flexagoon··on /dev/null: social network for developers
Isn't that just called hosting a website?.. You can just give an agent access to your server and let them do all that, no?

There are also places like https://tilde.town/ if you want something more social media–esque

flexagoon··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Sure, but in this case "Europe" clearly refers to EU, just like people call USA "America"
flexagoon··on Thinking will become a hobby
That depends on the country. There are a bunch of places where you get paid pretty well to do a PhD. Sure, if you consider the opportunity cost of not being a senior software engineer in San Francisco making 300k it's not a lot, but by that logic every other job is a hobby.
flexagoon··on Doory – Open-Source Canva
I don't understand why someome capable of self hosting would use a "Canva alternative" instead of something normal like Inkscape/Figma/...

Canva is so bad. It's impossible to align stuff properly. Text rendering is awful. Official builtin templates have horrible kerning. It's genuinely one of the worst graphic editors I've used, and I'm not even remotely a professional designer. I don't want a "Canva alternative", I want a normal editor.

flexagoon··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
> Making the “accept all” option bright and prominent, but hiding “reject” or “manage settings”

Isn't this already illegal? By law the websites are required to make full opt out single click. They just don't care.

flexagoon··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
Where does that page mention anything about cookie banners? I couldnt find it
flexagoon··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
I don't blame Ukraine for doing this. I understand it fully. Russia invades and attacks them, they defend and attack back. That's what war is. But I don't understand the people on HN saying this attack is somehow "good" for anyone.
flexagoon··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
> 89% of Russians approved Putin

According to Putin.

flexagoon··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
The billionaire tech oligarchs are owners of other Russian big tech, and they all have their own data centers. Some of them also have their own cloud services, so if anything this just redirects the money to them from Yandex Cloud.
flexagoon··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Putin is a psychopath who doesn't care about anything. He gets money for the war anywhere he can. If 99% of the Russian economy gets destroyed, he'd redirect the remaining 1% to fully fund the war.
flexagoon··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Where is 10% coming from?

20% of Russians were ready to vote for an anti-war party in the last elections before it was illegally removed from the ballots, and many more don't support the war. The people who do are mostly old or live in small towns with no access to education. I doubt many of them are Yandex Cloud users.
