flippingheck··on Using Blu-ray M-Disk as backup of last resort
Am I unusual in not having looked at my parents or grandparents photo collections?

I occasionally look at my own, but that's about it.

flippingheck··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
I agree. And let it be legislated.

I was replying to "Why aren’t the data centres just honest about their water usage if it’s seemingly so low?".

flippingheck··on Self-hosted HTTP tunnels with SSH and Nginx
Where doesn't Iroh work well?
flippingheck··on Self-hosted HTTP tunnels with SSH and Nginx
Yes, and TLS/QUIC/Wireguard all offer encryption.

What toomim is excited about is this combination of technologies, and that's more than just NAT punching or encryption.

flippingheck··on "No Vendor Lock-In" Is Code for "No Product"
> We use them because we want the best model available. We want GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, and Opus 5.5. They're really good models and open-source models are not even close.

I want the best model, but I can't afford the best model.

Cheaper models happen to be good enough, and I can afford them.

Even after reading the post, I'm confused what the author is missing. There are graphs competing cost, but is the author just rich enough that they can afford the top models all the time?

flippingheck··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Transparency is not the same thing as honesty.

Companies might want to avoid this being used as a side channel to infer the amount of their compute.

Companies might want to avoid setting a precedent where activists can demand such information.

Companies might want to avoid the effort of publishing this data, or the risk of publishing incorrect data.

flippingheck··on The work by Valve's Timur Kristóf on improving old AMD GPUs on Linux
Sorry, yes, I meant how could I donate to Timur if he's not being funded my Valve for this.

+1 to buying Valve's products.

flippingheck··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
D1 does look great. I usually don't bother setting up services with state, but maybe CF D1 is hands-free enough.
flippingheck··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
I think we agree, though I can see why it might not have seemed that way, since I didn't draw attention that users might rightly conclude the overall tradeoff is worth it, even if another tech is sounder in some minor aspect.

React can adapt, and though Web Components might still have some claim on X, Y, Z, React still is heavily preferred because all the other things are so much more important to developers.

For what genuine gaps remain, there's lots of React users that can help others through it.

flippingheck··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
Yeah, they seem well placed with their cheap-but-grear offerings.

I'm a cheapskate so am sometimes motivated by this cheapness, but each time I realise it's easier to just stick with what I know (Linux daemons) than cloud offerings.

Do you have any suggestions for something in the homelab/self-hosted space where CloudFlare has great offerings? (Other than the boring stuff like cache/DNS).

flippingheck··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
What do you think about CloudFlare Artefacts?
flippingheck··on The work by Valve's Timur Kristóf on improving old AMD GPUs on Linux
Awesome.

Is Valve funding this work in particular? How can people donate?

flippingheck··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
When a technology becomes popular enough, it develops a community that solidifies that choice: conferences, books, extensions, a generation of engineers that see things in terms of React.

A technology needs to be a lot better to overcome that aspect.

Sometimes I visit a subreddit for a tech and see them all discussing strategies/techniques that are ultimately workarounds for what an alternative technology has fundamentally solved, but... the original tech has an army of volunteers able to help newbies workaround it, which is often an easier onboard experience than the alternative tech that just works, but doesn't have any advocating solutions/blog posts because there are no blog posts to be written.

flippingheck··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Yeah, I'd guess Oracle DB isn't attractive to startups, and that's probably a long term risk for them.

There is plenty of $$$ at the top, at the moment.

Oracle Cloud offers them some long term strategy.

flippingheck··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
The Dutch government provides baseline standards: https://www.bio-overheid.nl/bio2/bio-producten/baseline-info...

I'm sure NixOS can provide those, but rather than each department figure out how to do that, organisations try to centralize figuring this out: which packages and configuration satisfies the requirements.

One of the items discusses MFA. Organisations will want to standardise on exactly which MFA devices they provide and support.

flippingheck··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
They likely offer at least some of:

* typical deployments

* training/consulting

* compliance with Ditch regulations

* shared infrastructure for custom builds, and CVEs

flippingheck··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Could it be selection bias?

Perhaps you and employers that happen to stick with Oracle aren't looking for the same thing?

flippingheck··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
When the category is playing with cubes, I'm not so sure?
flippingheck··on Claude Code reads AGENTS.md only when telemetry is on [fixed]
At $FAANG, ~all changes go through feature flags.

There are processes to make changes outside of feature flags, but they have enough friction that it's easier to just use a feature flag.

This level of paranoia is consistent with the blast radius of changes breaking Claude users.

flippingheck··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
I don't think I spend more than $20 USD on DeepSeek though?

I'm happy to spend more for a better product, but mostly I just want to avoid quotas, since it turns me into an addict, feeling like I have to be ensuring the bots are active.

I like that with DeepSeek's API pricing that I can not sure it for 2w, and not feel like I've missed out. 2w is a long time, but I only use it for personal stuff, and I often go 1-2w without using it due to other commitments.

flippingheck··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Maybe I need to upgrade from DeepSeek Flash 4.1.

How are people using 5.6 Sol? API pricing? Subscriptions?

I like because DeepSeek 4.1 Flash because I never experience quota issues, and it's still cheap and mostly good enough.

flippingheck··on AMD's random number generator can't generate a 0?
I would be very concerned if an RNG simply produced a natural 1.
flippingheck··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
I cannot see why this litmus test is either necessary nor sufficient for evaluating the success of LLMs.
flippingheck··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
It's advantageous in rules-based systems, but many aspects of life, particularly interpersonal, are not rules-based.

Systems thinking pays well, which is advantageous, but this might be short lived, now that LLMs can mediate interfacing with rules-based systems.

flippingheck··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
Unconsciously masking is still tiring, and masking doesn't generalise well to unfamiliar situations.
flippingheck··on Backups Aren't Simple
> There are two types of people: those who have suffered a catastrophic loss of data, and those who will.

This is an empirical claim, but is it grounded in reality?

99% of people don't backup, and that's probably the right choice because the risk is low, they can't meaningfully improve their restoration rate themselves and they don't care enough about their data to classify its loss as catastrophic.

When a person hears someone talk about the importance of backups, but also haven't heard friends/family suffer this date, they will rightfully ignore this warning.

Or do we all follow the best practices as it relates to backups, exercise, sleep, nutrition, accounting, house maintenance, ... Etc.

I do not. Backups aren't near the top of that list.

This stuff just isn't very important to most people and that's okay.

flippingheck··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
Are you sure it's not just chocolate stuck in your teeth?

More seriously, that's fascinating. I don't think I experience this?

flippingheck··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Thanks, that's really handy to see.

Looks cool!

Ah. I read the post, but only saw "2024-07-16 04:52 ChanServ changed [...]"

On mobile I didn't see the full URL, and zoomed before I saw the calendar. My bad.
