flpm··on The importance of communities around software
I had the same experience until I found the right project. And the post resonates a lot. Egos and politics are not fun. In some projects people are just fighting for power, it's not about community nor code. Keep looking, don't give up!
flpm··on Classic PC demoscene productions running natively in the browser
It's about how much control over the tool and the output the artist has. A photocopy machine and a pencil are both tools that can be used to make a copy of a photo. The machine is much faster than the pencil and produce a very accurate result, but only the pencil version has artistic value. The resulting artifact artistic value is a token that represents the creation process.

flpm··on A retro terminal music player inspired by Winamp
Looks great and bring backs a lot of memories... I had to go back to https://skins.webamp.org/ for a nostalgia shot.

I wish music had not move to stream, I think I appreciated each song much more when listening did not feel like such an ephemeral experience.

flpm··on Pope tells priests to use their brains, not AI, to write homilies
I think it is okay to use AI to help you express your ideas better. I think the idea of AI acting as an "editor" reviewing my work and pointing out potential clarity issues is very helpful.

In this scenario AI does not rewrite the text, but prompts the human to rewrite and then review again. It's a short and strong feedback loop that can be a very powerful learning tool if the learner uses it correctly.

I heard this interesting quote about AI (paraphrasing): "We invented a cure for exercise, we should not be surprised later when we realize that we quickly run out of breath".

flpm··on Rahm Emanuel says U.S. should follow Australia's youth social media ban
But it's not clear to me that the echo bubbles are not still there. I think the more important aspect is control. Who is making the decision is more important than echo bubbles are bad.
flpm··on Rahm Emanuel says U.S. should follow Australia's youth social media ban
Social media is not the same product as social networks. It had value when you were in control of what content you wanted to see (your friends' posts).

Now social media, controlled by algorithms, is just like a permanent informercial. You have direct ads and first level indirect adds (sponsored content), but it goes deeper than that, when they manage set up a "viral trend" you have a lot of people acting as speaker person for brands without even realizing.

Attention shapes who you will become in the future, because it focus on what matters to you. When you outsource that to others, they can mold you into what is more profitable to them. Specially kids, who are at the prime time for being influenced.

I love the idea of a personal site/blog changelog!

In Digital Ocean you can host up to 3 static sites for free, includes HTTPS, your own domain names and automatic deployment from GitHub repos. Look for their "app platform"

Also a hiring manager. I always do. For me a good personal site is a huge step towards a phone interview. I look for things people do not because anyone told them to do (college projects, internships, work), but because they were excited about it. That initiative and excitement is what will set you apart from the other 100 resumes that look exactly like yours.

flpm··on How to Write Compelling Release Announcements
Great post, this is so true. We pay a lot of attention to the release emails we make. They are important documents that that explain the value proposition of the app.

We often select 3 items and spotlight them in order of priority. So there is also an element of selecting what has the biggest impact on the user, because most people will not read it all. If they will only remember one thing, what is the one you want them to take away?

And as you said, often the spotlights are things that took just a few hours while the work that took the most efforts appears a small bullet point in the bottom.

flpm··on Zuckerberg's Grand Vision: Most of Your Friends Will Be AI
Someone having a lot of artificial "friends" algorithmically based on their behavior sounds more like a disorder than a desirable state. Something in-between schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder, but outside your brain. But all is fine, as long someone can make money out of it.
flpm··on Zuckerberg's Grand Vision: Most of Your Friends Will Be AI
true, but we are not "intelligent"
flpm··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
I was in the same boat, but I started noticing that if I force myself not to do silly multitasking (like not paying attention to what I am doing because my mind is thinking about irrelevant other things) it gets better. Since I stopped the infinity doom-scrolling it has improved a bit

Stress and lack of sleep also affect me a lot. Both are omnipresent, since I am a parent of young-age special-need kids.

flpm··on Paper Apps
We (me and my 8 year old) loved the Dungeon one and really enjoyed, as a carry-with-you-for-when-you-are-bored item.

Also cool is their d6 pencil, so you can roll a dice without having a dice, very smart idea.

I am really inspired by ideas like this: you can generate engagement with simple things like a piece of paper and a pencil. And despite some of the comments, I love that they call it an "App" because it makes you think what is an app after all: the code? the fact it runs on a phone? or that fact that it is readily available to engage when you are bored?

flpm··on Paper Apps
It's a satire about the world of app-everything we live in today. The notepad of the past is a non-software Notes app today
flpm··on Nobody cares
It's a sad realization. When our culture only values profit as a measure of success there is a strong incentive to cut down costs (now) in exchange for quality (that will only be perceived in the future). It slowly moves down the threshold, bit by bit, until you suddenly realize how much we all lost for a few very rich people to become a little bit richer.
flpm··on Standard patterns in choice-based games (2015)
This is very interesting, thanks for posting! Makes me think of the big choice diagrams in Detroit: Become Human. I wonder if there is any literature about this?
flpm··on The Latest Fake Literary Agencies
This type of scams prey on the ego of the target. In the attention economy everyone wants to project an aura of expertise. Someone interested in your expertise is just about the perfect bait. Literary agents, publishers, VCs, sponsorships, etc.
flpm··on Republishing my Simpsons fan site, twenty years later
I think the problem is the pressure to "monetize" projects that today's internet puts on everything: either monetize the attention (ads) or by generating expertise (the "personal brand"). Back then it was just for fun, so it looked and felt more human and less corporative. We need to make the web human again, specially now with generative AI.
flpm··on BlogScroll – An open directory of personal sites and blogs
The Internet has a big discoverability problem now that search has a big advertising conflict of interests. The only way to find web "human" content is to rely on the curation of other humans.

Funny enough mining those links is what made Google the giant it is now. But this time around we will not be fooled by the next "don't be evil" tech giant :D
