foonamefoo··on The Music Industry’s New Extortion Scheme
So the buyer donates to his friend, and his friend donates to him, and effectively no one ends up paying the computer tax.
foonamefoo··on You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss: The Cliffs Notes
Doesn't that completely validate the way in which I used Chomsky? I wasn't being negative.
foonamefoo··on Python: Bitwise NOT and List
your humor detection may be broken.
foonamefoo··on Python: Bitwise NOT and List
That wouldn't matter since we are talking about python, not assembly or C.
foonamefoo··on Star halfway across the universe was visible to naked eye for 30 secs on Wednesday
It is impossible to know what is outside of our lightcone.
foonamefoo··on Hack a meal in 10 minutes or less. No ramen allowed
The laughter is coming from the size implied by "cedar plank".
foonamefoo··on You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss: The Cliffs Notes
I would say that you have much more creative freedom as a tenured professor (if getting to that point hasn't completely destroyed your spirit) than as a startup founder. Look at some of the stuff Noam Chomsky has been able to devote almost all of his time to--it sure isn't linguistics.
foonamefoo··on You weren't meant to have a boss
You also just described the major problem with the government artificially allowing such a thing as a limited liability (I'm talking about legal, not debt) corporation.
foonamefoo··on A laser experiment to show the Uncertainty Principle [video]
As the slit gets smaller the percentage of photons that are bouncing off of the walls of the slit as compared to the percentage that goes through directly raises.
foonamefoo··on Ask YC: Salary vs. Hourly for the Startup
I find this interesting because I actually had a friend who worked the night shift there one summer in college (around 4 years ago). He was paid hourly.
foonamefoo··on Standing Still Predicts School Success Better Than IQ
I don't see all the mystery: people no longer beat their kids to the extent that they did 60 years ago. Maybe if they made the request as part of a game instead of as an order from an adult there would be more validity (but you can't go back in time to the '40s to make them change the experiment as well).
foonamefoo··on Ask YC: What are the command line tools you can't live without?
gnome-open for gnome users
foonamefoo··on Guy Kawasaki launches Alltop, an "online magazine rack"
Oh I don't know, maybe abstain from having an SEO category right on the front page?
foonamefoo··on New Internet Meme - Zuckerbucks
Since the stake in Facebook was sold as part of a conditional advertising agreement, it shouldn't count as a "closing price".
foonamefoo··on Ask YC: What do you do if American economy enters a downturn?
>First, the [...]

It has reversed before, why does it seem unlikely now?

foonamefoo··on Little Known Hacker News Is My First Read Every Morning
Yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn.
foonamefoo··on Hacker News Site Guidelines
He was talking about things like the YC summer/winter application forms, not the moderation system.
foonamefoo··on The world's 50 most powerful blogs
Lew Rockwell did a lot more to kill attention seeing as he was outed as the ghost-author of the [person we aren't allowed to talk about here]'s controversial newsletters.
foonamefoo··on Journalist becomes the story at Mark Zuckerberg SXSWi keynote
Is this Hacker News or Valley Wag?
foonamefoo··on A keyboard without keys - Dasher
I actually read "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" a while back and all I could think the whole time was "binary search, binary search, huffman tree, something other than linear search please god".
foonamefoo··on Keeping up with the Zenters
it is a shame that find . -name "*{js,py,rb,php, html}" | xargs wc -l

I guess {} globbing is bash specific?

foonamefoo··on How I Overcame My Math Blocks
That's where the kidding part came in.
foonamefoo··on How I Overcame My Math Blocks
His performance helping a grade school kid with his population project? I kid, I kid.
foonamefoo··on Poll: I come to YC.news to ...
vote in stupid polls
foonamefoo··on Rumor: Microsoft about to unveil web-apps strategy
In the very limited field of dinky web calendars and todo lists, maybe, but not in the startup world in general.
foonamefoo··on Never Complain. Only Ever Code.

    if !(your comment was code):
        print "that was a complaint"
print "by the way this is the new way we apparently have to talk around here"
foonamefoo··on Sir Tim Berners-Lee: Semantic Web is open for business
Running a myspace/facebook "list of facts/preferences" style profile on your own webserver, that is spidered by someone like Google, and becomes queryable in the same manner as it is on those sites. You could even have a cryptographically signed token from some trusted entity that verifies that you legitimately have a particular .edu email address embedded as a semantic element on your page, and could use a spider service from google to collect comments made from your "friends" to put on your "wall", verifying their identity without them having to log on to your site. The one thing you can't handle under this scheme is varying privacy levels.
foonamefoo··on FreeBSD 7.0 Released
If FreeBSD would support Xen I'm sure they would be happy to oblige.
foonamefoo··on (1..100).inject(&:+)
Then lets say you packaged that up as a library. Another guy did the same thing, but it worked a little different. Now random code breaks.
foonamefoo··on Our secret sauce
Once again Google plays down the significance of the PageRank patent. Is search amongst the giants really as similar as he says here? I know that Google has had to do a lot of tricks to avoid gaming of PageRank, but isn't PageRank still the core?
