formercoder··on Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is back in its all-online format
Everything but the last problem is something money solves. A good production company would ensure that, while issues like that would happen, you’d never be aware of them.
formercoder··on The S in IoT is for Security
I’d encourage anyone who enjoys these projects to check out Home Assistant. It’s an incredible open source project with support for countless devices.
formercoder··on Zapier reached a $5B valuation with $1.3M of funding
So the theoretical reason for the high values of tech companies is that margin is one of the biggest drivers of value in a dcf, due mostly to the non linear nature of division. However, many of the tech companies we’re seeing don’t have near those margins, they are in fact negative.
formercoder··on Instacart mulls direct listing in snub to IPOs
And the committee memo is so much shorter when there’s no equity risk!
formercoder··on US Senators call on FCC to raise broadband definition to 100Mbs down and up
Yep, big city here, 1G/1G fiber to my apartment for $80. It’s supply and demand.
formercoder··on The worst of the two worlds: Excel meets Outlook
Ah these are fair points. Have probably gotten so used to them by now that I don’t get annoyed by them.
formercoder··on The worst of the two worlds: Excel meets Outlook
Ah but most secretly have Powershell which is super powerful.
formercoder··on The worst of the two worlds: Excel meets Outlook
What’s wrong with its copy paste? It’s missing a few things but what’s there is great. The type situation is terrible I agree. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve screwed up a currency conversion or not known what currency a cell was. Why can’t it know that dollars are dollars and when I multiple my euros per dollar I get euros?
formercoder··on IMF researchers: digital footprint yields better credit assessment
Cue arms race
formercoder··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming (1994-2020)
Wow I read this in 2006ish. Amazing document to still be around.
formercoder··on Netflix's Annual Reports (10-Ks) used to be a work of art. What happened?
Unfortunately it’s very occasionally wrong, making it almost useless for me.
formercoder··on Netflix's Annual Reports (10-Ks) used to be a work of art. What happened?
Flashy 10-Ks are hugely annoying, especially in IFRS where there’s no standard. Give me tables all day every day. The lack of standardization in financial reporting already sinks enough of my time.
formercoder··on Johnson and Johnson single-shot vaccine appears 66% effective in global trial
Yeah I just don’t understand why we can’t put the full industrial capacity of the U.S. government behind this. I’m genuinely curious about the on-the-ground details which make manufacturing this stuff hard. Would love to see the playbook for raw materials to vial of vaccine.
formercoder··on Coinbase announces proposed direct listing
Curious what the accounting rules are around their BTC on the balance sheet. Would be wild if they had to mark to market.
formercoder··on A recent poll of employees who are working remotely
My guess is the following will take place: companies will generally be more open to WFH. Those who spend more time in the office will develop stronger networks and relationships, will be able to advocate for themselves more easily, and thus will be more successful. People will snowball back into the office as they see this happening. Keep in mind I’m generalizing, I’m fully aware that you can create a culture that doesn’t disadvantage those that are remote, I’m just not convinced that broadly will happen.
formercoder··on Robinhood Said to Get 40% Revenue from HFT Firms Like Citadel (2018)
Sure, if people wanted to pay to trade.
formercoder··on Intel’s 8-Core Mobile Tiger Lake-H, at 45 W, to Ship in Q1
It’s great to see competition in the sector.
formercoder··on Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics for nearly $1B
In theory, it’s because the marginal cost of software is close to zero, and margin is the biggest driver of value. In practice most of these companies’ margins are negative.
formercoder··on USV Climate Fund
Wonder how this will compare to other funds of the same vintage in a few years.
formercoder··on Simple Bank Is Closing
Who's offering 2-3%?
formercoder··on Amazon buys 11 Boeing 767s to expand its cargo fleet
Pretty sure I’ve read there will never be a cargo a380 because its max takeoff weight is low compared to its volume.
formercoder··on Microsoft job posting suggests a major user interface update expected in 2021
I just windows-q and type the name of the application I want and it always works. Don’t even know what the start menu looks like.
formercoder··on Ditching Excel for Python in a legacy industry
Usually it’s pulled in via plug-in from a third party data source like Bloomberg or a cheaper alternative.
formercoder··on Ditching Excel for Python in a legacy industry
I think there could be a middle ground with an excel like tool with some kind of typing. For example I often get confused about what currencies particular cells are, and mixing this up causes a lot of pain. Not sure why the hard coded number can’t just have a “$” and every time it gets multiplied by EUR/USD changes to a euro, and is displayed as such. This little thing would save me so much time.
formercoder··on We should administer Covid-19 vaccines as fast as possible, not reserve doses
I saw that too and it makes sense. Begin with the most conservative approach and transition to just in time as confidence builds.
formercoder··on Max: Boeing 'inappropriately coached' pilots in test after crashes
Thank you. I certainly did not intend to communicate that “anything goes.” What I meant is that even when you apply the most cold-hearted financial analysis, short sightedness is often suboptimal. It’s tougher when your public investors watch every quarter like hawks.
formercoder··on Max: Boeing 'inappropriately coached' pilots in test after crashes
Hi. I’m an mba. Profits are pretty important and firms should undertake NPV positive activities. We’ve seen amazing products fail many times due to lack of market fit. However, there’s certainly no shareholder value in bankruptcy or lawsuits.
formercoder··on FDA grants authorization to Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine
Good to be cautious but there’s a lot of CYA in those SEC risk disclosures.
formercoder··on Slack wanted to stay independent, but was unable to compete with tech giants
Predatory pricing is a component of anti trust but a very difficult one to prove legally. One must prove that by giving consumers a cheaper product they are being harmed. It's an interesting conundrum.
formercoder··on Hyundai to acquire Boston Dynamics
Has everything to do with margin, one of the biggest drivers of value.
