fortran77··on HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN
Really? I quickly found some awful horrific racist material on "HackerTube". No thanks.
fortran77··on What we know so far about Spain train crash
At least California's high-speed rail will never kill anyone.
fortran77··on The tragedy of losing your Wikipedia page
Every year or so I check my Wikipedia bio page, which has been there for years. I guess I have enough "geek cred" to keep it going.

My cats do a lot of birdwatching. I wonder if it helps them?

fortran77··on C# now beats Rust on WASM size
For most projects, a GC'd language is just fine. C#/F# are great languages and I use them for almost everything that doesn't have extreme real-time constraints.

You do know you can get a Microsoft account for free? It would have saved you a lot of trouble.

fortran77··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Nope. If the messenger has a history of being unreliable, it's valid to call him out. I'm glad you read a TikTok guide on fallacies, but this isn't one of them.

fortran77··on Celebrating 70 Years of Fortran
Horray! I'm partial, of course, to Fortran 77 and until very recently, still used it. Mostly taking consulting jobs moving it to Matlab or Numpy and verifying it.

fortran77··on Show HN: XY Music Notation
It didn't take more than one month of solfege practice to be able to look at any chord or note on the grand staff in traditional western notation and be able to say what the chord is, what the intervals are, etc.

I still practice the piano 2 hours/day most days. The challenge of playing music isn't reading the notes, it's getting from one note to the next one. 99% of what I practice is simply hand positions, grouping notes, fingerings, voicings. Reading notation is such a trivial part of musicianship, mastered easily with just a few months of study.

fortran77··on Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled
I wonder if people are confused about their repositioning.

An AnitaB.org press release dated April 24, 2025, stated its mission as:

> “to get women in tech skilled, hired, promoted, paid, and funded so that they can thrive, lead, and drive innovation for a more equitable and sustainable future.”

The current mission page instead says:

> “to get our community in tech skilled, hired, promoted, paid, and funded, so they can thrive, lead, and drive innovation for a more impartial and sustainable future.”

It's really hard to tell from their current mission statement who "our community" is.

Not only that, they had Leon Theremin design some of their bugs! That's classy.

fortran77··on A Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 "obsolete" Mac Minis
Can it run Cray-1 software? The architecture is completely different. I coudn't get that from the article. It seems like a large cluster of Macs arranged superficially to look like a Cray-1.
fortran77··on A Remote Employee Refused 160 Webcam Photos a Day. Her Employer Fired Her
I'm not sure what this has to do with the article.
