frankwiles··on Python 3.15: features that didn't make the headlines
This is the way
frankwiles··on John Bradley, author of xv, has died
:waves: just saw tummy.com doesn’t resolve anymore. End of an era for sure.
frankwiles··on Sunsetting Jazzband
Yep trust was always the issue here really. Don’t blame Jannis at all for being super careful about that.
frankwiles··on Build your own custom AI CLI with Pydantic AI
A great looking framework for building an interactive development experience on top of the already awesome Pydantic AI.
frankwiles··on Some notes on starting to use Django
I end up needing to write a manual migration maybe once every other year in real world use.
frankwiles··on I hate GitHub Actions with passion
Sure thing. Also just made it easier to install with Homebrew since people seem to be liking it.

frankwiles··on I hate GitHub Actions with passion
Ah sorry need to make the docs more clear. You need to run ‘gg data refresh’ to populate the local DB first.
frankwiles··on I hate GitHub Actions with passion
I actually built the last thing last weekend weirdly enough.

gg watch action

Finds the most recent or currently running action for the branch you have checked out. Among other things.

frankwiles··on Anthropic invests $1.5M in the Python Software Foundation
It's super common with non-profits. Obviously they would prefer no strings attached but some light strings are usually not a problem for most non-profits.
frankwiles··on Perl's decline was cultural
Yeah I think I would have been considered part of the “in” crowd of Perl to some degree and it wasn’t the culture that drove me away and to Python.

It was Django and the people involved with it.

frankwiles··on Happy 20th Birthday, Django
Yeah after the acquisition I’m sure they moved everything to whatever the parent company was using which totally makes sense.
frankwiles··on Happy 20th Birthday, Django
That would have been hard since both of those projects came out after Django, but just an FYI Jinja2 templates are supported and nothing stops you from using SQLAlchemy. Granted you lose a lot of the tight intergration that makes Django great to use.
frankwiles··on Happy 20th Birthday, Django
Hi neighbor! :)
frankwiles··on Switching Pip to Uv in a Dockerized Flask / Django App
It takes 5 minutes to switch most projects. And less to go back to pip. Seems silly to waste a bunch of wall time when using pip when there is a super easy alternative that doesn't have high switching costs.
frankwiles··on Matt Godbolt sold me on Rust by showing me C++
Yes and he’s a really cool nice guy to boot!
frankwiles··on Amazon's AI crawler is making my Git server unstable
Have had several clients hit by bad AI robots in the last few months. Sad because it’s easy to honor robots.txt.
frankwiles··on Schwab users are unable to log in
The SEC does mandate SLAs and have for years. They’ll pay a hefty fine for this is my understanding
frankwiles··on Show HN: Protect your links with a password
I hear what you're saying, but people DO just put stuff out there for it to exist and aren't necessarily looking to monetize it. Crazy I know :)
frankwiles··on Building a SaaS product with Htmx – Are you sure you need all the complexity?
Might I suggest looking at django.contrib.auth.
frankwiles··on My dad and I replaced a 100MB HDD with a 1GB HDD for $100. When did this happen?
It’s about a cute tech memory, which likely brings back various memories for us all. I think worrying about the worthiness of a tech news site isn’t worthy of our time.
frankwiles··on Microsoft stoops to new low with ads in Windows 11
I haven’t really used Windows on the desktop since the 90s but I DEFINITELY won’t be now.
frankwiles··on How I stopped worrying and loved Makefiles
If you’re really looking for a tool to collect small steps/script I highly recommend you check out the ‘just’ cli tool. It’s completely replaced our use of Make and the syntax is much easier.
frankwiles··on Ask HN: How do you find employment opportunities in 2024?
I think one area people miss out on is local meetups in a tech area you know and want to work with. Networking with those people you’ll discover which companies are good/bad/etc and then also know someone there.
frankwiles··on New tires every 7k miles? Electric cars save gas; tire wear shocks some drivers
Yep 33k here and I’ve had to replace all 4 but it’s been for hitting bad pot holes at speed, nails, etc.

7k is way too low, I would believe 25-30k for speedy drivers.

frankwiles··on Passenger flight flying over Pacific reaches 822 MPH in jet stream
Thank you for putting it that way. I swear if the rest of the world just poked fun at us for using it, we would probably change it. “Awww look honey, the Americans are still using miles and pounds, isn’t that precious..”
frankwiles··on Heads up – effectively offline for now
Tesla should donate a MegaPack battery to him :)
frankwiles··on My Love Letter to Rails (and Ruby) – Or, Why RoR Isn't Dead Yet
Django provides built in auth that is pretty great and extensible. OAuth/SAML and canned or customized registration flows are just a matter of adding the django-allauth module.
frankwiles··on Notes from building a blog in Django
Same, a bit of caching and the REVSYS blog survived being on the front page of Slashdot (back when that was a thing), Reddit and HN all at the same time. No Elon tweet for sure, but caching like Varnish, Cloudflare, Fastly etc go a LONG way.
