fred_is_fred··on Jobless tech workers are being left out of San Francisco's AI boom
Everyone unemployed anywhere is by definition being left out of the AI boom. Unemployed electricians are being left out too. It's a tautology.
fred_is_fred··on The Ocean 'Was the Color of Chocolate.' Mexico Declares War on Seaweed.
Do not give this administration any ideas, after all Caligula ordered his legions to wade out and attack the waves with swords.
fred_is_fred··on I didn't know I was lacking in Vitamin D until I collapsed at work
Having darker skin and living in a high latitude, especially one where it's not always sunny and inviting to be outside in short sleeves/shorts can lead to this. I am outside a lot, but far enough north that soon I will not get any Vitamin D from the sun - I take a daily supplement, it's cheap insurance. Costco sells 600 for $12.50.
fred_is_fred··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
On the path to being cancelled!! /s
fred_is_fred··on I Used AI to Fake a Scientific Paper. Here's What Happened
30 years ago we had the Postmodernist Essay Generator to do this for us. https://www.elsewhere.org/journal/pomo/

fred_is_fred··on Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees
Single tree moms are less of a problem in the Nordics though. Programs like Head Saplings can help though.
fred_is_fred··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
That's enough bandwidth to play Trade Wars and SRE so it's good enough for me.
fred_is_fred··on AI didn't cause the tech jobs bust, but it explains why there's no recovery
Most I know have done a 2-3 year bond ladder to avoid that.
fred_is_fred··on AI didn't cause the tech jobs bust, but it explains why there's no recovery
I have also seen a lot of retirements in the last 18 months. You combine the stock market being on a tear with a paradigm shift in how we work and it's not surprising.
fred_is_fred··on Zuckerberg can control Meta after death. He refused to give up that power
Ironic the source of this information - which Bezos will control after his death.
fred_is_fred··on They war-gamed dimming the Sun. It went worse than you think
"These cloud seeding agents have a dessicant effect on the forests"

What is the agent that causes this?

fred_is_fred··on They war-gamed dimming the Sun. It went worse than you think
A good read on this from Neil Stephenson is Termination Shock. It's fiction, but covers some of the possible geopolitical fallout here.

fred_is_fred··on They war-gamed dimming the Sun. It went worse than you think
I don't usually engage on conspiracy theories but why not provide more detail? If you've seen the planes, then you can use an app to figure out what the aircraft is and the owner also. You could then share that data here. What company and/or entity is "they" here?

Which National Parks?

What endgame are you proposing here? What's the goal?

fred_is_fred··on Google is silently linking your phone number across all signed-in accounts
More data = better ad sales.
fred_is_fred··on Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled
I was there a few years back and it was a total mess. Over run and recruiters being assaulted by students throwing resumes. Completely mismanaged.
fred_is_fred··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
Commit espionage. Make no mistakes.
fred_is_fred··on Worlds more habitable than Earth?
Is there any plausible way for a human to ever reach one given what we know about physics at the present?
fred_is_fred··on Leaving Tech
Last time I look I applied to over 50 - and that was in a better market.
fred_is_fred··on Solar panels that plug into your wall
Where I live we have Time of Day electricity pricing where the prices jump 2-3x during high demand. Panels conveniently produce the most power around this time, so this can save people money.
fred_is_fred··on Study: Exercise increases cancer survival rates
When my wife had cancer the only exercise she could do was walking - but she did it religiously. 3-4 miles every day - except chemo days off. On days after chemo it was 6 short walks. On healthier days it was longer fast walks - the goal was the average. I think in addition to physical health it helps mentally also.
fred_is_fred··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
I get ads for doing just this exact thing on Reddit all the time from a company that offers to help you set up the LLC and do the paperwork.
fred_is_fred··on House with 15m underground tunnels for sale for 300k
Is that an issue in the UK?
fred_is_fred··on US closely monitoring case of lab worker who possibly died of plague in Siberia
Same bacteria for both.
fred_is_fred··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
As a non-joke question - I am surprised a CEO can do this. Wouldn't there be contract terms about notice period, orderly transition etc?
fred_is_fred··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
I've always wanted model sharding.
fred_is_fred··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
Could someone who understands design explain to me the reason why sites (and Word for that matter) like to load with a TON of blank space on the sides? Is it for mobile? I am on a monitor and it's all just wasted space, even if I bump the font. Is there a reason other than "looks good on a phone"?
fred_is_fred··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
Ever worked in open source?
fred_is_fred··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
In Quebec's version of this law it's legal to insult politicians and police - but only in French.
fred_is_fred··on Show HN: Ive Sent It – online courier for files, with signed proof of delivery
#include <std-dropbox-joke.h>
fred_is_fred··on The Economics of Open-Weight Inference
The style and font choice here is awful. Nearly impossible to read in the daytime.
