free··on Show HN: Client-side ads-free dev utils (diffs, time conversion, JSON formatter)
really like that it's completely client side and no ads.
free··on U.S. economy shrank at a 1.4% annual rate in the first quarter
That's one thing that India got right in response to Covid. The primary focus of the stimulus to alleviate the supply side constraints[1][2].

Many were questioning the approach of focusing on supply side, making small changes, observing and reacting instead of a big mega stimulus the likes of USA did. Good to see some merit in India.

free··on 90-year-old man spends $10k on 2 ads in WSJ to tell AT&T CEO about slow internet
Unlikely, jio has been operating for more then a couple of years and there’s no sign of this happening. In fact, it’s had the opposite effect of catapulting the digital ecosystem to another level.
free··on Ask HN: How have you used automation to simplify your life?
My current automations are food related( groceries, milk, diapers), bill payments (rent, electricity, landline) and investments (daily SIP in index funds and monthly FDs). While this is trivial I really feel it has taken a load off me as I have a habit of forgetting things.
free··on Indian developer jailed for making unauthorized train ticket booking app
Am not so sure he will fare well in US. I recall Aaron Swartz faced a similar charge leading to his tragic demise.
free··on India’s civil servant exam
India has a literacy rate of 90% as of 2015[1], so I think the point holds.

free··on India’s civil servant exam
With a population of more than a billion I think India has enough bright minds available for all of them.

Also, with India trying to increase its influence and assertiveness in global affairs having bright people in foreign affairs seems a good thing to happen.

free··on Introducing Moto E and Moto G with 4G LTE: Smart phones priced for all
This is the first time I am seeing that a phone is priced cheaper in India. It is exclusively available online in India on http://www.flipkart.com/motorola/motoe
free··on Postman: a powerful HTTP client (for Chrome) to test web services
I switched to Postman because it supports attaching files to make multipart request, which the RestClient does not.
free··on Lawsuit: Oracle called $50K 'good money for an Indian'
You get what you pay for. The only people joining would be the one's who have no other option. They'll only harm themselves in the long run I think.
free··on Using ImageMagick to make sharp web-sized photographs
Yeah, but changing the color space to RGB also significantly alters the way it appears. Then I have users who complain that this is not what they uploaded and its a genuine complain.

I was going to suggest that the real problem is people using IE8 but that wouldn't go too well I guess

free··on Using ImageMagick to make sharp web-sized photographs
True, my app processes around 100,000 images daily and it uses a quality of 85. Never had a problem. But I do keep an archive of the original image just in case
free··on Using ImageMagick to make sharp web-sized photographs
One problem I recently encountered is that some images refused to load on IE8. Turns out that the IE does not support CYMK color spaced images and the image appeared significantly differently on chrome and firefox. Was quite surprising since I had assumed that jpeg was a standard format and would be supported by all.
free··on Using ImageMagick to make sharp web-sized photographs
This is fine if you have a limited set of images that you handpick and optimize.

Do you have any suggestions when there are thousands of images and all this needs to be automated?

free··on Using ImageMagick to make sharp web-sized photographs
Tangential to the point being made, 98 as quality seems way too high for an image to be shown on the web. 85 seems to be a decent tradeoff. Doing so might actually increase the image size.
free··on Our SQL interview questions
They seem to be quite simple. For what profiles are you asking these questions?. I have used very similar questions for dev ops role.
free··on Never mind talent: Practice, practice, practice
Easier said than done. That's like saying 'just cheer up!' to someone who is depressed.

You have to know how it feels when you have tried all you can and you still come up short.

free··on Ask HN: Meditation resources?
I have had a great experience listening to these podcasts http://www.audiodharma.org/series/1/talk/1762/ . It is pretty simple and I found the first part to be a good introduction for beginners.
free··on A Dust Over India
Thank you for taking the time to write this. I come across articles and opinions like this all the time and always feel a little offended, but I do not know exactly what triggers that. Maybe its because I notice the progress happening, the hard work people put in, only to read articles and opinions that portray the situation so negatively.
free··on A Dust Over India
Come on, that picture is more exception than the norm. I travelled by bus for years when I was in school and college. There are definitely people hanging near the doors but nowhere as close as to what you mentioned in the picture.
free··on Mighty Facebook down?
I can access it now. But it definitely was down for some people for some time.
free··on Ask HN: Image processing as a service (IpAAS?)
I am currently working on processing images at scale(maybe small) and would be also be interested in knowing this.
free··on Ask HN: Image processing as a service (IpAAS?)
identify -verbose <filename> if you have imagemagick installed.
free··on Talent shortage in Indian IT
This link gives a better answer http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-hottest-startups-in-India

Amongst the ones I personally know Flipkart, Myntra and Cleartrip have some really good people. And then there are freelancers who work remotely for the bay area startups.

Edit : If you are in Bangalore, then do attend the tech conferences here to get a better idea of the ecosystem.

free··on Talent shortage in Indian IT
Yes, I am in the startup ecosystem in Bangalore and I can definitely say that there are pockets of real talent here. In fact I feel lucky to be in a place where I am enjoying work, learning a ton and surrounded by some of the most talented people I have ever seen.
free··on Cube: 3D home printer starts shipping in days
This looks quite interesting. I am not much informed of it. Can anyone share an overview of the technology underneath? Also what kind of things it can print, what and how much the raw material would cost?

Also the page show the image of a sandal in free creations section. Would it be possible use it as an actual footwear?

free··on How I Tricked Myself Into Being Awesome
Someone here submitted site for the same thing. http://sein-cal.co.cc/

What I have done is taken a printout of the same and marked on it everyday.

free··on I don't hire unlucky people
My takeaway from the article was that Ernestine wanted to hire a good programmer and she focussed on just that. She did not consider the established conventions on what to do in such a situation.

Interestingly, I have observed this to be true in few other situations as well, where established conventions and processes are actually an hindrance rather than help.

free··on Facebook: Legal action against employers asking for your password
Did I miss the sarcasm? How is that clear to you?

I thought asking for personal information like marital status , age, etc.. is illegal in the U.S.
