freepor··on German Hospital Hacked, Patient Taken to Another City Dies
Hospitals need to be connected. They need to send and receive EMRs from other hospitals. They need to receive security updates for their own software (eg Windows has a Bluetooth vulnerability... someone could hack from inside). Medical providers need to look up information and consult doctors in other areas if a patient is being transferred.

The solution here does not need to be “operate hospitals in digital isolation.”

freepor··on Ask HN: Do kids drag your career down?
Of course they do! You want to spend every minute you can with them and start cutting whatever corners you can with everything else.
freepor··on Ask HN: Is there still a place for native desktop apps?
You need a desktop app when 1) you’re spending a ton of time in the app or 2) you need every ounce of performance and feature set that you can obtain and 3) you’re willing to pay for it.

If you’re not building something like this, don’t build for desktop.

freepor··on Tesla workers’ unemployment may be suspended if they don't return, emails show
Elon Musk is the guy who bets his house at the roulette table. It’s been working out for him so far but one day he’s going to step into some shit his money can’t get him out of and it’s going to be entirely his own fault.
freepor··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
If you do that you also have to disregard the other myriad ways in which Indianapolis is a better place to live than SF.
freepor··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
They don’t need to pay SF rates. 100K in Indianapolis buys you a way better standard of living than 200K in SF.
freepor··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
If the seniors are remote who will onboard the juniors in person?
freepor··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
Not asking for any sympathy — not asking anyone to care about my problems any more than I care about theirs.
freepor··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
Yikes. My Silicon Valley home price is likely to suffer.
freepor··on Apple unveils biggest update to Logic since the launch of Logic Pro X
One thing that’s always been very important to Apple’s marketing is the sense that the coolest people in the world use Macs. The positioning has always been “Well that CEO has a PC but that artist with a lot of sexual partners uses a Mac.”

Logic is part of the portfolio to preserve that image by having as many musicians as possible using Apple hardware and software.

freepor··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
Nobody knows what a barrel of oil will cost next year so any claims about the future price of Bitcoin come from someone who is trying to scam you.
freepor··on Small farms in New York are experiencing a surprising boom
Costco/Walmart is an inaccurate bucketing because they are completely different stores tailored to entirely opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum.
freepor··on Your mobile data sold, without your knowledge
The problem is that Apple has no way of truly controlling what someone does with data once they have it.
freepor··on Microsoft now blocks reply-all email storms to end our inbox nightmares
I wonder if there is an exception for execs. At a previous employer it was quite common for a big piece of news to be announced by a senior exec and then have the CEO and other execs reply all in a big storm. Definitely more than 5,000 FTE on the list.
freepor··on School districts are sending WiFi-equipped buses to poor and rural neighborhoods
Imagine a college educated family of anti war hippies whose son applies to West Point. I don’t think you’d be shocked to hear that a parent hid the acceptance letter.

Very simply, that Family doesn’t consider a university education to be “better” for their kid, they consider it to be worse.

freepor··on School districts are sending WiFi-equipped buses to poor and rural neighborhoods
And the flip side of this is that if you have really dedicated parents then they can often overcome huge amounts (although not unbounded amounts) of privation to help their children succeed. I had a Vietnamese cleaning lady who would bring her kid with her to clean my house. While she cleaned she would be asking him math questions from a sheet of paper she had in her shirt with the answers. She’d read out something like “73 times 27” and the kid would get working on it and he would have to do it until he got it right. No treats or video games or money offered.
freepor··on Rebuilding our tech stack for the new facebook.com
Facebook isn’t trying to maximize your enjoyment, they’re trying to maximize their profits. By that measure they are doing vastly better than 12 years ago.
freepor··on For cops who kill, special Supreme Court protection
On the one hand, cops shouldn’t get to kill unlawfully and say “I was doing my job.”

On the other hand, if an Amazon engineer checks in a bug and AWS goes down and a hospital loses its medical records and people die, we hold Amazon liable, not the engineer.

freepor··on April Unemployment Rate Rose to a Record 14.7%
There are very few people who want to wade through primary source data. I don't -- doing that is what journalists are paid for.
freepor··on Stack Overflow reduces global workforce by approximately 15%
Well "trash" is a matter of opinion, but profitability isn't. If a community is left unmoderated, it gets so toxic and extreme that advertisers won't go near it with a 10 foot pole.
freepor··on New Zealand eliminates Covid-19
By natural resources I meant agricultural productivity.
freepor··on Stack Overflow reduces global workforce by approximately 15%
Every site with user-generated content has an army of employees of various sorts, trying to make sure it doesn't descend into a morass. The natural un-moderated state of any community site is complete and total garbage.
freepor··on We Chat, They Watch
You forgot "I personally built it from source using a compiler I personally built from source with a micro-compiler that I handcoded in assembly on a computer that I assembled from transistors myself."
freepor··on New Zealand eliminates Covid-19
New Zealand has vast natural resources and a very small population. They will be fine without tourism. Of course it will have an impact... you'll see more people on old Androids than iPhone 11 but they will be fine.
freepor··on Instant dev environments for cloud-native apps
Iteration speed is sometimes an effective substitute for deep product insight. If you are a Steve Jobs you can go off and spend a few years building something in secret because you know people are going to love it when you show it to them. For everyone else, being able to ship stuff quickly offers a chance to maximize the number of spaghetti strands they can throw at the wall until they find one that sticks.
freepor··on Driving engineers to an arbitrary date is a value destroying mistake
If you are paying people on a schedule you need to have at least a rough understanding of what they can produce on a schedule. The best illustration of this is client work that is paid "by the job" -- you need to understand what you can produce to have any idea how to bid.
freepor··on Neiman Marcus files for bankruptcy
No, Neiman Marcus has always been an upper crust store with extravagant Christmas catalogs.
freepor··on Neiman Marcus files for bankruptcy
Please familiarize yourself with the terms “per capita” and “inflation.”
freepor··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
But the opening of a conversation influences the rest of it. It's like the old experiment about guessing the number of countries in Africa.
freepor··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
No, when businesses were owned primarily by single individuals, their priorities were much more aligned with the goals of a single individual. The owners cared not only about profits but respect in the community, influence over politics, etc. and made choices that today’s publicly traded companies would and do not.
