friendlybus··on Solar2D Game Engine
You're all wrong and this is very frustrating.
friendlybus··on Solar2D Game Engine
Yes I've used lua for modding old games like Natural Selection 2.

The docs and community in roblox and factorio fill in for the deficiencies of the language. Try using lua without support frameworks. Modding ns2 is a nightmare with zero docs and trying to reverse engineer in a terrible debug environment. Lua just doesn't stand up by itself.

You are only discussing the successes. Even built for purpose, game building applications like Core fail miserably to make development easy enough off the back of lua. Far cry 1 had lua scripts that went nowhere.

What love2d games?? The tech demos and hobby projects listed on the website??

For the three or four big successes there are a lot of obscure failures.

The big successes of creative modding projects came out of Half Life, Half Life 2 and Warcraft 3 which spawned Dota, team fortress, counter-strike, left for dead, garry's mod and many other successes.

War3's editor and XNA are the best modding environment's I've seen for individual acheivement.

Kids dont know better, they just put up with the jank and learn from their friends.

friendlybus··on How the 'Western mind' was shaped by the Medieval Church
The last millenium was indeed shaped by the church but I am very curious what the role of religion or faith will be in the current millenium.

Going to churches because that's 'just what you do' has completely faded. People are expressing more faith in relationships than old institutions.

friendlybus··on Solar2D Game Engine
I mean, so does assembly. Rollercoaster tycoon was written in assembly. But for mere mortals lua is just too much hassle for game dev.

C# with XNA (or monogame) is a nicer 2d barebones game framework to work in, as long as you can dodge garbage collector issues.

Lua really isn't a great choice. It doesn't have enough features to support anything beyond UI layouts and super basic scripting.
friendlybus··on Gary Numan: 'One of my songs got over a million streams – I got £37'
The most viewed youtube videos are songs. Bruno Mars Uptown Funk is sitting on 4 billion views [0].

Music has way more impact than video.

friendlybus··on Gary Taubes: 'Obesity isn’t a calorie problem, it’s a hormone problem'
Hard to answer that question any better than we can for alcoholism, workaholics and perpetual cheaters.
friendlybus··on Twitter deletes China embassy's Xinjiang 'emancipation' tweet
It's wrong because we own our own bodies. The confict of expanding humanity does not go away when you manage the population, people will want to expand.

Giving the state arbitrary powers to limit population growth is a form of violence. Having a state sactioned sterilization on excess children is just as horrific as a war, without any of the spoils of war.

The problem lies in the fact that the gov is the last body left to resolve our deepest conflicts as we are no longer free to commit acts of violence on our own behalf. Making it through life used to be materially difficult and death was far more common. Living in our current heaven-like atmosphere has far darker implications for the age-old conflicts.

friendlybus··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
Unions depend on making a black and white argument. The whole idea can't work with a nuanced argument. Either the company bows to the union or strikes start up. Either the employee joins the union or he/she gets kicked out of the company.

It's socialism for the majority. If you want a nuanced argument, meet your union leader at the church he goes to on sunday and see how fervently committed he is to his goals. You're more likely to get a nuanced argument in the face of God, rather than these big dick, black and white union arguments people endlessly wave in our collective face.

The union structure is not free from religious, political and justice problems. Some of the largest unions in the US spend union funds on politically charged topics that easily divide it's own membership.

You won't get a satisfying answer because it has little to do with rational answers and more to do with sexual security. Union members secure and promote their progeny.

friendlybus··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
If I search "Kleenex" on Google, I'm asking Google to find me Kleenex, not some ads. If Google is going to start listing things in highest-to-lowest bid, then it stops being a search engine and starts becoming an auction house of links.
friendlybus··on Arthur Jafa’s Radical Alienation
WASP privilege is fading. It's either melt into humanity or lift the future cultural leaders into heaven. They are doing the latter.

The problem with lifting future leaders is they are not ready yet. They need humanity to grow to a point where the next cultural force has something to say.

friendlybus··on How to overcome Phone Addiction
I don't want to tell tales out of school or anything. I've met an ex-marine who suffered damage in training and stories from internet videos all corroborate the general story. The marines are the offensive branch, and the individuals get treated poorly. You get a lot of respect for your title, but other branches have a better quality of life and better jobs available.

https://youtu.be/UMoLKLM8SMg Fun story time by an ex-air force guy who was going to join up to the marines (4:30).

friendlybus··on How to overcome Phone Addiction
The marines come with an individual cost that is frequently less valued than service in the army or airforce.
friendlybus··on School or Prison
When you shove 30 kids in a class or 200 students in a university lecture hall, you're going to value conformity and pulsed, factory-like processes.
friendlybus··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
The culture changed, reddit just follows. I still miss the thoughtful discussion of difficult ontological questions in the popular culture around 2017-2018. Soon we will be discussing rhe expectional mechanical keyboards, and then some time after that the tasteful keyboards, and then some time after that the sexy keyboards. It goes on, consistency is not rewarded as the wave of cultural interest moves on.
friendlybus··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
There are laws the media must follow. There is a truth they must tell, legally and also the stuff that gets clicks and views is true for it's audience in a salient way.

Authority has the power to control, it's part of the job description and politics resolves the truth of that domain.

Why do you want something 'more powerful' than truth? You just excised yourself from philosophy, religion, god, law, ect in dismissing truth.

We all want 'true' love anyway so the distinction is poor.

friendlybus··on The Cruise Ship Suicides
There was one guy who revolted with some unrelated conspiracy stuff and got arrested in his house. A pregnant woman tried to start a party with friends that was flagrantly against the measures and was arrested.

Law and order problems still exist even in a lockdown and I think in Feb we'll see people push back against the oppressive atmosphere.

friendlybus··on Amazon Destroys the Intellectual Justifications for Capitalism
This is the exact problem I have with survelliance capitalism. What stops Microsoft, Google, ect from cornering every market? The last time I posted the question I was told those companies are looking for billion dollar investment opportunities and anything less isn't worth their time... and here we have Amazon cutting the nerdy kid's lunch money like a high school bully.
friendlybus··on CIA vs. Wikileaks [video]
Yeah there's a couple in this list:

Tibetan dissent in china, russians spying on their own people, ect. There's a few entries that contain multiple countries. I only skimmed the list.

friendlybus··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Hatred came out in 2015, and was effectively banned in some regions. A true test on this topic will never happen in the public, Adults Only rated-games only get so far.

"Mike Splechta of GameZone questioned the game's timing and how it could become the "next scapegoat" in a climate that already held video games responsible for school shootings and other violence."

friendlybus··on Ask HN: Why are personalised ads bad?
I keep overthinking my reply. How can ad data divine the future of what I want? It can't really.
friendlybus··on Ask HN: Why are personalised ads bad?
I checked my youtube search history one day. It goes back to 2010 and most of the time I search for the same stuff. Particular songs I remember, specific topics. Really nothing new or interesting.

I want new info and to be connected to the world in my media. Personalised ads and media kills the sense that the media is confirming your worldview. We all know it's a tiny isolated bubble of information and rarely do recommended feeds or ads suggest something I want.

Personalised ads attune themselves to my past and I don't need to solve the same problem repeatedly.

friendlybus··on India’s booming dark data economy
Assigning consequence to relationships is not a sign of distrust.
friendlybus··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Overhyped is one thing, unfinished is another.

For all it's faults and failings, Duke Nukem Forever worked. In the literal functioning sense.

Cyberpunk is just unfinished. We went from "when's it done" to "burn the customer on a fast release" in a few short decades.

friendlybus··on UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal
What's cynical about it? People got to vote on him and enough approved.

If you hold something against people named 'alex' then let's hear it.

Prime ministers are a part of a larger story. The practice of aligning with the larger story won't change, people will just work harder to make it happen. I don't want to play the game of guessing who legally changed their birth name to match what the people wanted instead of just running on a pen name and accepting the world as it is.

friendlybus··on London put in emergency lockdown as U.K. fights new strain
Parroting Christopher Hitchens: what is presented without proof can be dismissed without proof

Mutations that have a real impact on the RNA of the virus are incredibly rare. Most random mutations and errors replicating don't produce any meaningful change in the virus and you have to get very unlucky for a deadly mutation to happen.

We should stick to scientific rationalism even if it has limits. There has been too much opportunistic fear-mongering and questionable decision making playing advantage off the back of a natural virus.

This thing obeys the laws of physics, kills people in a particular pattern and can be managed with scientific tools we have had forever. There is simply no need for everybody to be hysterical yet again, when the science of the virus can be so easily spelled out for the masses.

But noo, we have to have a boogeyman to build a network of cultural changes. This particular mechanism of hijacking a natural disaster for control is embarrassingly transparent.

friendlybus··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
It has a Wanted system like GTA. The comparison is accurate.

Most character skills are damage addons. If you don't pick assault rifle, your going to have a pretty slow time. Crafting is pointless, augments are just another skill tree.

'The way it's meant to be played' was the same apologetics we got with No Man's Sky on launch. Like three people wanted to play NMS as an empty grind-a-thon in a chill atmosphere that goes nowhere.

Cyberpunk failed to finish development. We all know it, why the rub?

friendlybus··on Richard Ford: Do we really need friends? (2017)
Friends are close enough you can tell them the stuff that bothers you and distant enough that they can comment without being directly involved.

This brings so many advantages and one of my favourites is the sense of putting the world to rights. When you have good friends you can calibrate a justified sense of where you're going and what things ought to be without having to commit to learning it the hard way.

Frankly Ford should of had the conversation in the article with a friend, he would likely derive a more satsisfying answer to his premise.

He repeats his own woe too many times and goes on about his over-thinking about friendshop. Just go to a pub and socialize, why does it have to be a reminder of your childhood betrayals, or your crippling loneliness? Everybody has their own story, if you listen for two minutes people say incredibly interesting things.

This guy dumping his life story on page 1 makes a friendship a very short affair. Friends gradually reveal themselves to each other, for a bunch of reasons. But it makes the friendship last a long time and gives you time in the moment to reflect and enjoy the difference each shared story makes on your life.

Do people reject their own instinct for friendship??

friendlybus··on Why Content Is King
In 2017 Nintendo sold roughly $257 of Switch hardware for $300. 40 dollar profit. They might have increased the margin since then.

A $60 game is sold to a retailer for $38-45. The publisher takes 20 of that (nintendo in this case) and the advertising & developer take the remaining 20. So nintendo probably takes 40 dollars profit from first party games like Zelda.

Margins on consoles used to be lower, $10-20 and they'd make $40 on the controller sales. The joycons on the switch cost 45 to make and sold for 50. The margin is back into the console as a whole again.

Digital sales on ingame items are likely close to pure profit.
