frizlab··on iPhone Duo: Impressions in Motion
Because the iPad form factor is actually very useful sometimes, but you don’t necessarily want to carry an iPad with you all of the time. I personally do (and use a mini as a daily phone), but can understand why some people would want something easier to carry.
frizlab··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
Fastmail. They are good.
frizlab··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
That’s, to put it plainly, dumb.
frizlab··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
It mostly is. Has pretty much caught up with all of rust actually (while being much more readable).

It’s not possible. Logging in to a banking website is becoming strictly speaking impossible w/o a phone.
frizlab··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
I love Easter eggs like those.
frizlab··on Claude Duet
It. Don’t anthropomorphize AI.
frizlab··on Claude Duet
Given that anti-AI posts are flagged faster than I thought possible despite a lot of positive comments, there are probably a lot of silent viewers that are pro-AI…
frizlab··on There is no official XScreenSaver GitHub repository
me too…
frizlab··on The obscure trust looming over Anthropic's IPO
> but if it becomes commodity im gone next day

AFAICT it’s pretty much already a commodity. DeepSeek 4.1 has similar results for a fraction of the price.

frizlab··on X Is Bad, Though
> My kids loved Harry Potter, but we don’t give any more money to trans-hater JK Rowling, either.

Yeah. OK.

frizlab··on Once: Cache CLI Commands
From the example in the Readme, I guess retrieving a token from an API, using a secret fetched from a secure vault that requests a password or TouchID validation.

Not sure if there could be other interesting uses. I can’t think of one anyways.

frizlab··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
I fail to see how this is disappointing. It was obvious from the start that it was what was happening, there is no disappointment to have!
frizlab··on A 100x faster* alternative to homebrew
Latest version of brew is now fast enough for making having a faster version useless IMHO.
frizlab··on A 100x faster* alternative to homebrew
Given the number of patches homebrew has to download for a number of packages, I doubt it’s that easy
frizlab··on Maybe a better way to track the release history of a Git repo
I love this idea.
frizlab··on Example.com just launched the biggest redesign in decades

frizlab··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
Is it not? https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/allow-all-incoming-em...
frizlab··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
Or iCloud+. He specifically asked for Apple Mail integration ffs
frizlab··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
I do not expect that but I would love it.
frizlab··on The Server Side Cloud Swift SDK
> [Swift] has matured into a viable systems and cloud language, pairing Rust-like data-race safety with predictable, reference-counted performance.

That was unexpected! Very nice to hear.

frizlab··on Firebase SDK is CRASHING ALLLL iOS Apps, since today morning
All iOS apps that are using firebase… It’s an important distinction.
frizlab··on The Post-AGI Era
haha same
frizlab··on Search – A small, fast WebKit browser for macOS
Looking at it:

- Resources are 130MiB, including a phishing filter set json file of 18 MiB, phishing hash prefixes of 6 MiB, lots of images and other resources (js, etc.)

- The main binary is 87MiB

- Another binary of 32MiB for “private information removal”

- VPN proxy extension is 17MiB, the VPN binary is 21MiB + 10MiB in another file

- The network protection app extension is 25MiB + another 25 in another file

The rest is frameworks (mostly Lottie and GRDB, in terms of space).

frizlab··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
> I feel using AI in place of pedagogy will have similar results.

I think it will actually be much, much worse.

frizlab··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
And yet, none of that invalidates what I said.
frizlab··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
I have done a few open-source projects (none of those took off, but that’s OK). I did them because I wanted to give to the people, not greedy corporations. It was an implicit contract with the world, which has been broken by AI. You can say “but it was never written!” Maybe. It still hurts. (And it is also not really true: for example MIT requires attribution, which I’m still waiting to see in all of the AI-generated/AI-helped projects…)

It was also a joy to write things and know certain like-minded people would like it. Now I don’t really want to do that anymore.

frizlab··on That About Wraps It Up for Stock Mac UI
Interesting take, but I do not agree. I actively want much more apps to look stock. IMHO any apps, if they are not games, should have stock UI.
frizlab··on Obscura: VPN that can't log your activity
How do you compare with iCloud Private Relay (with the obvious exception that private relay only works on macOS, and in specific apps only)?
frizlab··on I said no and Apple said yes
Most companies did that before Apple, yes. I hate that trend.
