frmdstryr··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
After more searching I found this article https://www.gingerbill.org/article/2020/05/17/relative-point...

A far pointer sounds like the global based pointer described in that article. The far pointer Wikipedia article says they are problematic but doesn't give much reasoning as to why.

frmdstryr··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
Do any languages have a notion of "relative pointers"? So in the example if instead of appending "line" as ptr & len, it'd instead be appending an offset & len which could in theory be used to safely compute the actual location even with relocations.
frmdstryr··on HTTP3 Explained
Also apparently slower over fast connections https://arxiv.org/pdf/2310.09423
frmdstryr··on HTTP3 Explained
Yes, no performance difference either.
frmdstryr··on QUIC for the kernel
The "advantage" is tracking via the server provided connection ID https://www.cse.wustl.edu/~jain/cse570-21/ftp/quic/index.htm...
frmdstryr··on Ask HN: How do you organize your electronic components?
I mostly leave stuff in the bags and put them in labeled boxes by category (eg MOSFETs, drivers, etc).

Also wrote an app to track what I have in stock https://f-droid.org/packages/com.codelv.inventory/

frmdstryr··on Ask HN: Server-side HTML Templates based on DOM?
enaml-web does this using lxml. It works fine for a limited number of concurrent users.
frmdstryr··on Ask HN: Why Free Open Source Software?
Simple, because I use foss.

I'm always amused when people bash on free software, then you ask if they wrote all their own software, libraries, compilers, etc.. and hear silence.

frmdstryr··on Dune 3D – an open source parametric 3D CAD app bassed on OCCT
> I would love to see a successor to OpenSCAD

There is quite a few "code" CAD's around https://github.com/Irev-Dev/curated-code-cad. Cadquery has contraints but isn't really a DSL.

Given how good Horizon is, this is exciting!

Hopefully he can find a way to fix the problem of broken models due to invalid vertex/edge references on fillets/chamfers/etc.. when changing features.

This is a problem even script based programs cadquery/declaracad don't really solve.

frmdstryr··on File for divorce from LLVM
"In the near term it would also reduce the number of targets Zig supports", I hope not but it sure sounds like it.
frmdstryr··on File for divorce from LLVM
So I spent ~4 years writing all my embedded projects (and libraries) in Zig and now several "tier 1" supported arches are just going to be dropped?

It's your language so do whatever you want but please adjust the branding accordingly...

frmdstryr··on Effective June 7, 2026, Autodesk will no longer sell nor support EAGLE
I've been happy with https://horizon-eda.org/
frmdstryr··on Declarative GUI with constraints-based layout engine for Python
There's a web toolkit for enaml. https://github.com/codelv/enaml-web
frmdstryr··on Things not available when someone blocks all cookies
There's an extension called cookie autodelete that does that. https://github.com/Cookie-AutoDelete/Cookie-AutoDelete
frmdstryr··on Debugging bare-metal STM32 from the seventh level of hell
> always avoided interrupts

I'm curious... how does one achieve precise timing without interrupts?

frmdstryr··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
I recently found https://commoncrawl.org/ and started working on my own personal search engine. I'm surprised how easy it is to actually get decent results with just metadata that show up nowhere in Google/DDG.
frmdstryr··on HTTP/3: Everything you need to know about the next-generation web protocol
This "feature" is also a major downside... protocol level user tracking. See https://svs.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/publications/2019/2019...
frmdstryr··on FreeCAD: Open-source 3D parametric modeler
ntopology uses SDFs. I believe its based on libfive.
frmdstryr··on Pyodide: Bringing the scientific Python stack to the browser
https://github.com/codelv/enaml-web/ does exactly that
frmdstryr··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas!
frmdstryr··on Enaml Native - Make Native mobile apps with Python
I'm hoping that enaml-native improves some of the pain points that I had with kivy (ex. non native widgets, complicated build system, no "standard" tool integration / debugging, poor version management, "centralized" recipes). Enaml-native addresses a lot of these (or tries to). Would you mind sharing what issues you had?
