frutiger··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
As a slightly less but still very casual enjoyer too, I don't think there is a huge amount of value in dumping the lean proof or the natural language proof. I'd rather have an abstract of a paper that I can at least hope to understand 75% of before getting lost.

I'm guessing if you were really interested, you could email YANGMILLS4D@gmail.com (itself a hilarious e-mail address).

frutiger··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
This whole article is not about the aristocracy.
frutiger··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
> Buyers of these will probably by definition make blended wines, which are not really held in high regards. People who drink wine are usually quite demanding about their drink.

The highest regarded wines are blended. Bordeaux wine makers that have large estates may only use their harvests (still blending varietals from year to year), but many Burgundy wine makers will buy harvests from different parcels and blend. There are exceptions but that is not the norm.

I like the sentiment but wine has been made for thousands of years, with famous stories of kings and emperors enjoying them.
frutiger··on What Sun got wrong
I would wager that almost no Linux installs are done by CD or displaying VGA anymore (maybe 0.01%).

frutiger··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
> We aren't actually sure what gave our core the spin it has, right?

We are, it’s from the conservation of angular momentum. The material that made our planet also had a non-zero angular momentum.

frutiger··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
> they don't even pay taxes on the money they spend, since they can borrow against the assets and spend on credit.

They have to pay taxes on the income/realised gains they use to pay the loan back when it matures. It’s not completely tax free.

frutiger··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
This framing is also in the post. From the readme:

> Bonsai itself -- this library -- is actually more generic than the above makes it sound. It allows you to build general-purpose incremental, composable state machines. Bonsai_web builds on top of that core library, specializing it for interactive browser-based UIs, but we also have Bonsai_term for building interactive terminal-based UIs.

frutiger··on How Many Elementary Particles Are There, Really?
> But of course one can then question why are there exactly N different types of fields, with their specific types of interaction (at least in our universe)?

Even that has a (still unsatisfactory) answer.

Poincaré symmetry imposes constraints on the kinds of fields we can have. Gauge symmetry shows us how they may couple.

There are still some arbitrary selections of the possible permutations that nature has “picked”.

frutiger··on Experience: We found a baby on the subway – now he's our 26-year-old son
At least in NY State, babies up to 30 days old can be left for care by the state.

> New York State's Abandoned Infant Protection Act allows a parent to abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days of age anonymously and without fear of prosecution, as long as the baby is abandoned in a safe manner.

> A parent is not guilty of a crime if the infant is left with an appropriate person or in a suitable location and the parent promptly notifies an appropriate person of the infant's location. A hospital or a staffed police or fire station are examples of safe and suitable choices.

> A person leaving an infant under this law is not required to give his or her name.

These lenders will want some interest. The collateral is only useful if he defaults. If the collateral generates realized gains then those are taxed.

I know. I would still be impressed if Bezos’s w-2 income was below $400k.

Edit: also you need to pay the loan back, and the income to pay it back is taxable. You can die with an outstanding loan, but i’m sure bezos lenders will structure the loan to make sure they get most of their money back.

frutiger··on Amazon closing its Fresh and Go stores
The child tax credit starts tapering off if your adjusted gross income is more than $200k single ($400k joint). If Bezos is reporting less than that due to other deductions then that’s truly impressive.
