fsiefken··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Running an nvidia card at full load, would cost me ~100 euro of electricty each month (europe). Of course one wouldn't have usage caps.

Where the internet was a subscription 15 euro subscription to encyclopaedic knowledge, an genAI subscription is renting a researcher/programmer for 100 euro.

fsiefken··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Yes, I am running the same on a 64G mc. It's good, but slow at 25 tps on average! I want > 100 tps - but I don't have $5k to spare for an m5 ultra or an nvidia setup.

So I still wonder if one could get good enough quality with a faster higher quant or superoptimized Qwen3.8-27b with dflash2

fsiefken··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
I wonder if a higher Qwen3.8-27b quant could beat or match these lower < 16/24/48/64G Qwen3.8-Flash Next quants given similar quality.

What speed are you willing the sacrifice to debug/program for more complex jobs faster?

Then there are also these quants; https://huggingface.co/IsValorum/Qwen3.8-35B-A3B-Distill-MLX...

The 2024 screenshots I had forgotten about involved A) an X by Denys Davidov - a youtuber commenting on the Ukranian-Russian war - where commented on IS suicide bombers B) an infographic on the Israel-Iran war with a map with explosions C) another one i have forgotten about I can understand that if a machine detects something questionable and my phone has these things, that that could be reason to search and question me thoroughly given a general high alert.
fsiefken··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
I could go to the consulate in my country to ask if I could go to the US in the future.
fsiefken··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
This happened to me last month in Halifax Canada, I wanted to board a transfer flight to Amsterdam, going through Boston. I was stopped as I had salts with me from a buddhist relic I couldn't exactly identify. The machine said it contained a primary explosive (silver azide). I was ordered to give my access code to my iphone and 3 suspicious screenshots were found I made 2 years ago about the Iran/Israel war. I said I'm interested in geo-politics and watched the news. I was barred from the US for life - it was said that it could have been much worse. When I wanted to go to the main airport hall a number of canadian police officers arrested me and drove me handcuffed to a cell. I was asked if I wanted a lawyer and they arranged a phone call. The lawyer said I would spend to nights in a cell and then she would come to prepare my case and was strongly advised not to talk to people before that. I was released from my cell 7 hours later that evening after a thorough and friendly conversation with the canadian special police. I can understand that security don't want to take any chances with people carrying supposed explosive powders on an airport, so the system was doing it's protective job. That day there was a threat alert I heard later. A week later I heard from the person who gave me the relic (I was on retreat) that the border guard contacted them and said it was a false positive (what I suspected at the time, but I didn't dare argue against the machine results).

Astra is an incredible world builder and explorer, and can invent its own scientific instruments - crossing a game-changing threshold: it turned a few images of a biological microstructure into a full-blown metamaterials lab, then used its own creation to discover a design with ~2.1x the reference work-to-failure/peak-strength ratio. Metamaterials are some of the most complex materials we can engineer. Their properties come from deep architectural complexity - struts, cells, disorder, and hierarchy arranged across multiple length scales determine how the material deforms, absorbs energy, and fails. Designing them means searching a geometric space far too large for "intuition" alone. In this experiment we handed an AI agent that entire problem end-to-end, from image, to simulating the physics, to fabrication-ready geometry.

We started with an image of hierarchical, biological architecture; Astra then built a complete 3D metamaterial studio: editable geometries, multiple levels of hierarchy, disorder, gradients, a complete physics simulator featuring linear and nonlinear material responses, deformation and fracture experiments (with replay), and STL export for 3D printing.

Then we asked the agent to use the app it created to search for a high work-to-failure/peak-strength ratio. Among the candidates, the leading design reached approximately 2.1x the reference ratio.

The movie follows the structures through deformation and fracture, connects their designs to the property map, and shows the finalist assembled geometrically into a connected multi-scale material.

fsiefken··on A Rant About “Technology” (2005)
what do you think of peter f. hamilton? i like the prose, but i am not sure about character development.

“The balance is the penalty of being human: the danger of allowing yourself to feel. For this we walk a narrow path high above rocky ground. On one side we have the descent into animalism, on the other a godhead delusion. Both pulling at us, both tempting. But without these forces tugging at your psyche, stirring it into conflict, you can never love. They awaken us, you see, these warring sides, they arouse our passion.” ― Peter F. Hamilton, The Reality Dysfunction

“Life alone is precious, but conscious thought is the greatest gift the universe offers.” ― Peter F. Hamilton, The Reality Dysfunction

“Resolution, the ability and determination to see things through to the end. However unexpected or disappointing that end turns out to be.” ― Peter F. Hamilton, The Reality Dysfunction

“He had used drugs and nanonic supplements to compensate at first, then supplements became replacements, with bones exchanged for carbon-fibre struts. Electrical consumption supplanted food intake. The final transition was his skin, replacing the eczema-ridden epidermis with a smooth ochre silicon membrane. Warlow didn’t need a spacesuit to work in the vacuum, he could survive for over three weeks without a power and oxygen recharge. His facial features had become purely cosmetic, a crude mannequin-like caricature of human physiognomy, although there was an inlet valve at the back of his throat for fluid intake. There was no hair, and he certainly didn’t bother with clothes. Sex was something he lost in his fifties.” ― Peter F. Hamilton, The Reality Dysfunction

hi initramfs, i responded to robottoaster who referenced patent encumbered mp4, as alternatives there are vp9 and av1.

image formats are more backward compatible, but at some point one has to ask, how low do you want to go? vp9 plays on iphones from 2020 and android phones from 2010. I think animated avif files are basically av1 video files, like animated webp is vp8/9 video.

Animated gif is playable anywhere, but 10x bigger. For a wiggle blog or website I'd provide animated png alongside anaglyph, or anaglyph only.

There is also animated Jpeg XL *.jxl files for the bleeding edge. It's a pure image format but support is not there yet.

fsiefken··on Dopamine Fracking
This dopamine phracking reminds me of neal stephenson's "snow crash".

"[.] a counter-virus (known as the nam-shub of Enki), which, when delivered, stopped the Sumerian language from being processed by the brain and led to the development of other, less literal languages, giving birth to the Babel myth. L. Bob Rife had been collecting Sumerian artifacts and developed the drug Snow Crash to make the public vulnerable to new forms of me, which he would control."

fsiefken··on nowhere: an entire website encoded in a URL
Yes! It's similar to people sharing a simple url within a QR code only. I find it insulting and inconvenient - i can remember or jot down and type in a url - i don't need a smartphone to do that. In theory you could put a small html/website in a dense QR code, that would be truly offline - it's a similar thing.

fsiefken··on Modern Board Games: and why you should play them (2022)
Games I currently play:

- Race for the Galaxy

A fast paced SF card game. Players build galactic civilizations by simultaneously selecting roles (like Explore, Develop, or Settle), which dictates the phases that occur that round.

- New Frontiers

Often described as "Race for the Galaxy: The Board Game." It takes the core role-selection mechanisms of Race for the Galaxy but implements them into a more spatial and resource-driven board game format.

- Imperial Settlers

A deceptively cute but highly competitive engine-building card game. Players take on the role of asymmetrical historical factions (Romans, Barbarians, Egyptians, etc.) to gather resources, build locations, and occasionally raze their opponents' buildings to score the most victory points.

- Kyoto Shogi

A fast-paced micro-variant of traditional Japanese Shogi played on a tiny 5x5 board. Its defining twist is that pieces alternate between their promoted and demoted states every time they move, requiring serious forward-thinking and tactical planning.

- Seirawan Chess

A chess variant by grandmaster Yasser Seirawan. It is played on a standard 8x8 board but introduces two fairy pieces: the Elephant (combines movement of Knight & Rook) and the Hawk (combines movement of Knight & Bishop), which are dropped onto the board as the starting pieces move.

- Star Trek: Captain's Chair

An asymmetrical deck-building game where players take control of iconic captains and factions from the Star Trek universe (like the Federation, Klingons, or Romulans). It also has a strategic combat and resource management system.

- Gaia Project

An SF successor to Terra Mystica. You control one of 14 asymmetric alien factions, expanding across the galaxy by terraforming planets to match environmental needs. An economic eurogame with a tech tree.

- Cry Havoc

A card-driven, asymmetrical area control game set in a sci-fi universe. Four different factions (including native aliens and invading humans) fight for supremacy.

- AuZtralia / TaZmania (Expansion)

Set in an alternate-reality 1930s where humanity fled to Australia only to find it populated by Lovecraftian Old Ones. It blends economic route-building (railways and farming) with tower-defense combat. The TaZmania expansion has a dual-sided map specifically designed for solo or 2-player games, including a randomized terrain side.

- Lancaster

A 15th-century worker placement and area-majority game. Your "workers" are knights of varying strengths. Stronger knights can physically bump weaker knights out of locations. Players manage their forces to gain resources, vote on shifting game laws, and fight alongside the King in France.

- Calico

A cozy but brain-burning puzzle game. You draft different colored and patterned hex tiles to sew a patchwork quilt. Score points by completing design goals, sewing on buttons, and attract specific cats to sleep on their fav patterns.
