functionmouse··on Open Source Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps
Given the implied possibility of leaked code, can AI really write clean room replacements?

maybe that's the watermark
functionmouse··on VerusCite has its first retraction
VerusCite has its first appearance on my radar. Never heard of it.

> While I do not think that hallucinated citations should always result in a retraction,

Wtf?

functionmouse··on David Ellison on Paramount and Warner Bros. rename: "Together, we are Skydance."
This was written by humans to deliberately appear as though AI wrote it, in order to pump his bags.

Whatcha gonna do. Consume better slop or be subject to tyranny.
functionmouse··on LibDragon (N64): Explicit Anti-AI Contributor Stance (GitHub Issue)
DragonMinded is an OG. Thanks for DSOrganize! Used the heck out of the web browser and IRC client on my DS Lite on that thing back when DS Lite was contemporary.
functionmouse··on Sudo – A dedicated music player designed around listening to music
What DAC/amplification circuitry does it use? Does it support bit perfect playback the same way my iPod/sansa clip/computer do? Or is everything crushed to 48khz like a smartphone?

Why does it appear to be riveted together? Wouldn't Phillips screws or a snap together design (guitar pick to open) be more practical?

Is "Sudo OS" a euphemism for "Android but extra locked down", the same way Rabbit R1 was?

AI one-shot AI's* MMO.

functionmouse··on Lab on a Contact Lens Can Measure Stress Through Serotonin
"Team can measure serotonin in your eyeball with a serotonin sensor hooked up to wires coming out of your eyeball" doesn't sound as glamorous as the headline tho

functionmouse··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
this is such a lousy excuse
functionmouse··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Raspberry Pis, save for RP silicon like rp2040, have always been locked down proprietary black boxes.
functionmouse··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
An airtag is one device that by its nature desperately wants to be seen.
functionmouse··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
PS2 emulation leaves a lot to be desired in terms of accuracy and authenticity, and current original hardware backup solutions are not ideal or extremely cumbersome, including caveats like relying on homebrew software which alters the memory layout of games as they run, leading to inaccuracies and broken games, and needing to have multiple copies of backup loading software on your console, as some loaders will work with some games, but not with others. It's a right mess. Some solutions, such as MechaPwn, are more transparent, allowing you to burn so-called "master discs" of your game backups to DVD-R. As far as I can tell, compatibility is 100%, but if I recall correctly, this only works on specific models of console, and the process of burning a master disc can be unintuitive and relies on specific, deprecated, commercial DVD burning software.

From what I can tell, this opens the door to things like optical drive emulators, which replace the disc laser with an SD card slot, allowing the console to read game disc images no differently than the console would read a retail game.

functionmouse··on On Binary Translation and Its Consequences
> Consumers in the PC segment expect high performance across a wide range of applications

It seems there is a persistent rift between what hardware designers think users want and what users are asking for, only recently being addressed by major OEMs with products such as the MacBook Neo.

Nobody I personally know wants a faster CPU; they want competent, faster, native feeling software and more power efficient hardware. CPUs have been plenty fast for at least a decade now, for anything the majority of users and even gamers are doing. I'm playing through the new and notoriously demanding LEGO Batman game on an RTX 2080 and an i7-4790k, a CPU from 2013 that even the base M1 easily beats. The game runs fine. Most people I am confident do not need better than the M1.
