functionmouse··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
It is not so simple. Here is some information: https://www.aclu.org/news/immigrants-rights/we-documented-12...

functionmouse··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
The mechanical drive has probably failed. If you put the iPod in a freezer bag and get it very cold, it may spin up long enough for you to make a backup. But make sure it is in a freezer bag or something otherwise airtight or the condensation will brick it worse. The cold shrinks the metal enough to mitigate the initial friction of the drive spinning up.

From there, you can mod it to work from a micro SD card.

functionmouse··on Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
So this will end tech support scams, then?

Also. I regularly remove malware from people's android phones pro bono in and around my community. It all comes from the play store.

functionmouse··on Japan: Scientists develop autonomously swarming robodogs for anti-bear patrols
every new technology thing just looks like poorly disguised weapons now
functionmouse··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
coding the next big thing -- fleets of fleets of agents
functionmouse··on After automation: Solo founding will be the default
Then we'll automate the founders.
functionmouse··on Using Claude to reduce the attack surface of code
No, it means some billionaires catch strays and have to sell one of their yachts out of their fleet, or cut dividends. The collapse of the current Google/Microsoft security and management duopoly would be less impactful on the average computer user than the death of flash player.

None of this is for you; it's for money. It's someone else's empire. Cybersecurity is a farce, and western culture would quickly recover from a complete collapse, and be better off for it.

functionmouse··on Getting Banned from r/java
Yesterday, I received a lifetime ban from r/MiSTerFPGA for simply replying to a post showcasing an AI-generated core with the text "ai poison"

Two words, no warning - Lifetime ban

Regardless as to whichever side of the camp you're on on this issue, the hysteria is clear. Everyone's so edgy and reactionary. You could probably say the same about my comment.

functionmouse··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
wasn't LLaMa only open source because it had already leaked anyways? And they wanted to spin it in a positive light for their stakeholders.
functionmouse··on Dogs seem to agree with humans that 'bouba' is round and 'kiki' is spiky
Absolutely. Pickles taste kiki. Pumpkin pie tastes bouba. All sensory inputs can be mapped as waveform.
functionmouse··on Apple routed a graphite pipe through the iPhone Duo's hinge to dissipate heat
> The incredible engineering in the hardware is prized above software quality.

then let me root and customize the software to my liking

functionmouse··on CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY)
they call it "market basket" inflation. If eggs go up 20% and steak goes up 3%, inflation is recorded as 3% because obviously people will choose steak over eggs this year. Then next year, if steak goes up by 20% and eggs go up by 3%, inflation is recorded as 3% because obviously people will choose eggs over steak this year. This way, inflation is recorded as 6% even though everything costs 25% more; the governace gets to pat themselves on the back in the Bahamas with their piles of cash while the proles are left dumbfounded and starving.
functionmouse··on Show HN: XY Music Notation
yes but perhaps we should improve society somewhat
functionmouse··on Beauty in DVD Menus
Intriguing. Thanks for the writeup!
functionmouse··on Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?
Probably more like 80%. I know even some normies who go far out of their way to refuse Comcast's hardware.
functionmouse··on Satya Nadella says we should assume all AI models are 'compromised'
didn't that just turn out to be basically a plagiarised copy of an existing long term open source project that the AI stole?
functionmouse··on 11 of 23 Core Open Source Projects Run on 1 or 2 People
What makes you so confident in the results of that website?
functionmouse··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?

functionmouse··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
fwiw they donated everything they could; still not enough.

Will they learn their lesson? Find out next time!

functionmouse··on Beauty in DVD Menus
> In NTSC regions video on DVD almost always has a resolution of 720 × 480 pixels

This always irritated me. So presumably, television content was mastered and broadcast at 640x480, and then the x axis was scaled by a factor of 1.125 to fit 720 columns?

functionmouse··on God of War on PSP, recompiled to WebAssembly and running in the browser
It's great for people who want to point and hype. Terrible for people who actually wish to play and preserve games, though.
functionmouse··on It may soon be possible to create "mirror life"
Yes, we will work on life forms undetectable to the immune system. For uh, checks notes cures. Disregard the fact that the imperial military runs our society.
functionmouse··on Florida woman arrested for allegedly making threats in an AI chat
So if some 14 year old wants to throw up a phpBB instance on his raspberry pi, he should need a license and regulators' noses in his business, like how we extinguish- erm, I mean, controlled HAM radio?

How do you differentiate?

functionmouse··on As robotaxi accidents increase in L.A., the data reveal the safer driver
In the future, they're going to talk about how laypeople were not allowed to read credible sources like this due to paywalls, the same way we talk about laypeople in the middle ages not being allowed to read the bible.

functionmouse··on America's Restaurants Face a Dilemma: How to Sell Food in the GLP-1 Era
Make your establishment more accessible to the current working middle class. Currently, everything in our society targets the wealthy, as they have All of the money, but the wealthy are more likely to be on GLP-1's.

Sorry for commenting without reading the article. I cannot afford to because I am not wealthy.

I wonder, is there an ethical, good replacement for ACPI?
