g8oz··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
There are real differences and experiences between heavy users and occasional users, voters and moderators, question posters and contributors. Unless you're careful it's very easy to develop a culture of gatekeeping that is off putting to a broader community. SO wasn't able to successfully steer between the sometimes competing interests of these groups.
g8oz··on Show HN: We had AI write a wiki from 45k Enron emails, every fact cited
It would be interesting to do this to the Epstein files as well.
g8oz··on Upcoming critical PHP security release
What are you gonna say when your favourite language gets a vulnerability report with an AI generated exploit chain?
g8oz··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
She was quite active, which is more than we can be said about some of her predecessors. Also she was hated by the right people, that's always a good sign.
g8oz··on The One Question I Can't Stand at Restaurants ("What's your phone number?")
I just say "can we skip that?" No one has thrown a fit yet.
g8oz··on Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents
Perhaps they were right then as well in some sense.
g8oz··on Passkeys are not a trap
But what I don't understand is how are passkeys improving what Apple provides here. You could have just done this with passwords and had all the ecosystem benefits you outlined.
g8oz··on Sumatra File Manager
If it's half as good as the author's other project, Sumatra PDF then it will be amazing. Definitely going to check this out.
g8oz··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
Did the Palestinian children sniped in the head and chest have it coming as well?
g8oz··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
Have you kept up with the improvements in the latest PHP versions?
g8oz··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
I've always like reduce myself, didn't realize others had a negative attitude towards it.
g8oz··on US Customs supervisor busted for stealing hardware from Homeland Security PCs
This is ahistorical nonsense. White immigrants are perfectly capable of retaining native prejudices. Localized tensions among Eastern European immigrants in the earlier 20th century have been documented. And any immigrant group regardless of race will align with American culture a few generations in.

If by not fitting in you mean that they will continue to look different and retain some links to their ancestral culture then sure.

g8oz··on Carney's Bid to Make Canada an 'Associate Member' of the EU
Maybe Carney needs to post the kind of macho memes that Trump does for you to take him seriously.
g8oz··on San Franciscans are having sex in robotaxis, and nobody is talking about it
The AI is watching.
g8oz··on I refuse to let SPICE die
100% agree. VNC is well past its prime.

g8oz··on Doomscrolling Ourselves to Death
Clicked on some his other posts...and yeah.

g8oz··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
For most people around the world America is more of a threat than China. Heck for most Americans the American government is more of a threat than the Chinese government.
g8oz··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Model serving and inference will be trivial in the long term, right now it's a real choke point. Being able to do that with domestic chips is an important win.
g8oz··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Mo Bitar over on YouTube does the grumpy AI skeptic routine in a much more entertaining fashion.
g8oz··on Just say something people want
I hate everything this guy argues for.
g8oz··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
I fear this is the end of the rapid pace of innovation that we've seen from DuckDb.

"AWS has committed to supporting the continued development of DuckDB and its wider community for the long term."

Those are just words man.

g8oz··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
In general any deal with the other party is introducing last minute changes is one to walk away from.

And specifically any deal made with the U.S under Trump has no credibility, just ask Iran.

g8oz··on Canada suspends trade negotiations with USA and match tariffs dollar for dollar
Progressive taxation.
g8oz··on America's Colleges Are Hurtling Toward an Enrollment Cliff
For instance: developing citizens who demonstrate critical thinking, responsibility, organization, independence, collaboration, initiative and self-regulation.

Not all of these are easily measurable, but all contribute to a prosperous and free society.

g8oz··on Optimizing things in the USSR (2016)
