garraeth··on Coalition of big investors pushes banks to defund carbon emitters
Tangentially, is is presumptions to see the wave of stimulus checks as the genesis of a UBI system, not named as such, but essentially what we will end up with? Since many times government programs are never rolled back.

Imagine: every 6 months or so, $X gets sent out.

garraeth··on A Scary Amount of Nutrition Science Has Deep Ties to the Food Industry, Study

I hope it works out!

I tried registering for updates but got a Cloudflare 502. HN "hug of death"?

Once it's sorted out, I'll give it another shot. Quick request: can you please add more details to a faq or something? eg. how much it'll cost for us users, will there be a desktop interface, etc.

Thanks!

garraeth··on Getting paid not to use Facebook
The second image refers to the election several times so it makes me wonder if they are trying to see if FB has an effect on how you vote...pure speculation on my part based on their text, of course.

I'd like to suggest a title change to somehow illuminate the fact that scientists are the ones doing it themselves, not the general public.

garraeth··on Many Americans are getting more money from unemployment than from their job
Anecdotally, no.

My sister was able to re-open and she had the hardest time convincing her workers to return simply because of this fact.

Some never returned. Why would they?

Has nothing to do with safety or trying to keep people at home.

garraeth··on How Mormons built a startup ecosystem in Utah
You could argue that it is due to Mormonism:

"Deseret was proposed as a name for the U.S. state of Utah. Brigham Young—governor of Utah Territory from 1850 to 1858 and president of the LDS Church from 1847 to 1877—favored the name as a symbol of industry. Young taught his followers that they should be productive and self-sufficient, a trait he had perceived in honeybees."[1]

garraeth··on Orthodox Privilege
Absolutely not denying what you or pjc50 are saying (there are far too many who cry wolf, or benefit "inappropriately"), but I can imagine the case where some people may be in the honest situation where they feel they have been silenced because they cannot say what they would like to say.

Individual 1: "I'm being silenced." Group: "What would you like to say that you think you're being silenced about?" Individual 1: "I cannot say for fear..."

garraeth··on Animals Use Social Distancing to Avoid Disease
Total tangent, apologies in advance:

A genius university Dean recently re-labeled "Social Distancing" to "Physical Distancing". Lets not be "socially distanced", but rather simply "physically distanced".

Just putting this out there in hopes that it catches on.

garraeth··on Robot Disinfects Greater Boston Food Bank
Not really since you won't be able to effectively replicate the diversity of a natural environment - an environment like what you'd need to eventually build defenses against.
garraeth··on De-escalating social media conflict
Forgiveness requiring an apology isn't true forgiveness, it's more akin to revenge.

And if you wait for an apology, you'll never be able to forgive, remove that burden from yourself, from those who have wronged you who are dead. Many instances of anger and a lack of forgiveness are multi-generational - or even parent/child.

People can rightly forgive without the other party even knowing about it. In fact, I'd argue the best kind of forgiveness is done completely silently, personally, and the only way anyone could figure you that you have forgiven someone is through your subsequent behavior.

garraeth··on MS will ban Forza players who add the confederate flag to their digital cars
Read about the Bloods and Crips in the '80's, '90's. Schools were banning wearing red and blue because those gangs had hijacked those two colors. Anyone not in those gangs would take care to not wear anything containing those colors.

The op is not wrong for supposing it's possible for someone to be targeted due to wearing "shoe or shirt color".

garraeth··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
Sounds like the US education system.

Can we do the same thing there as we are doing with the police ("defund"/reboot)?

garraeth··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
It means/implies under the cover of darkness, or within a "black" box - un-seeable...A market place for anything illegal.

Going full on, we could remove the word "black" from our vocabulary. So hex #000000 would now be "abuefho" (some random made-up word) until people conscript that for their own designs and use it pejoratively: "you 'abuefho' jerk!"...

and then round and round we go...

garraeth··on My dad launched the quest to find alien intelligence
The SETI Institute has a very active YouTube channel if you are interested in updates: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzQdkHKOTVT_chwgDcau4sg

They also provide publicly available audit for their financials so you can see where they are at: https://www.seti.org/about-us/financials

As far as I can tell, they are still going strong. And the YouTube channel is always very interesting, and cutting-edge! It's not always about alien life directly, many times it is tangentially related (helpful [to the search] technologies, breakthroughs, panel discussions, etc). Perhaps not the most refined broadcasts, but they are always very educational and informative.

garraeth··on Ask HN: Am I the longest-serving programmer – 57 years and counting?
I'm also getting on (started programming as a kid early 80's on Atari 600) and agree with what you said - it really resonated with me and what I've seen over the years.

Sometimes too, I see comments from people frustrated with having to "work so hard". I'm sorry they have that burden, but for me, programming is not a negative in my life -- even though often times I do it many hours more than is actually asked of me. Sure it's got it's boring/frustrating times, alternatively it can be very difficult, rigorous, and taxing, but I doubt I'll ever completely put it down.

garraeth··on Testosterone, a key hormone in the context of Covid-19 pandemic
You're not wrong, but consider other "stuck-at-home" factors that contribute to over-eating: depression, boredom, food/snack availability (just hop to the "fridge" and grab something).
garraeth··on A non-moral dilemma about cheating, but it brings up some points (2019)
>> If we stopped making it a game, without points to earn and rewards for points, people wouldn’t cheat.

I think the OP is saying that if the "reward" for education is that you know more -- and that brings it's own intrinsic value on a cultural and personal basis -- then there will be no need to "score points" on any test or report card. Therefore, no "game" necessary. And that follows that there will be no cheating (why would you cheat if you, and your culture, are happy with the reward of education in and of itself?).

imo, it's will take a quantum leap for us as a culture to reward education for education sake. To the point that when you interview, simply saying, "yes I understand X concept" will be met with belief by the interviewer/teacher (vs/ now when you have to "prove" your knowledge by a game-able "score").

As for personally, imo, people can do it now: love to learn for the sake of learning. No point in cheating on the test if you're learning the subject for your own edification. The test will simply tell you where you are still weak.

garraeth··on Microsoft now blocks reply-all email storms to end our inbox nightmares
I don't know anything about email software, but would it be difficult to add a popup after hitting the "Send" button that would appear only if there were more than X recipients (w/ a user-configurable minimum and sane default)?

Something like: "This email will be sent to 5,000 people. Are you sure you would like to send it?"

garraeth··on How to disable the built-in Windows 10 ads
I'm surprised no one has mentioned O&O ShutUp10 (https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10).

I've used it on my Windows computers for years and never see ads.

garraeth··on CO2 emissions set to fall nearly 8% this year, the largest drop in history
Please forgive my ignorance - why is this being down-voted (rhetorical)?

Shouldn't this be discussed, at least? In preparation of the various scenarios.

Wouldn't it make sense with everyone stuck at home and bored, "things" might happen? In a few years we might refer to children born in 2021 as "Corona/Covid Kids", no?

And with a population "boom", pressures on the planet may increase? Perhaps. People may become desperate for the "good old days", and/or won't care so much about the planet because they are desperate to survive financially at any cost [to the planet]...?

Perhaps not - if society becomes more conservative relative to "dirty" energy usage (oil, plastics, etc)...? And beings to enjoy, and appreciate things like working from home, cleaner air, etc...

[edit]: I should say that the "boom" may be tiny, if so none of this may matter.
