gavin_gee··on Gemini 4 Argon
This. The next gen is LLM direct to machine code. Watch MSFT in this space with their dev tool industry -this will be the master stroke
gavin_gee··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
the race to the bottom on models is well underway. huge IPO's only really make sense for DC/HW lockups, and going vertical.
gavin_gee··on Quality non-fiction books are the antithesis of AI slop
the cope from authors.
gavin_gee··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
i dont understand the concern. they are putting up great financials. you have to invest ahead of the outcome. this is just classic quarterly public company earnings BS, where public markets dont reward innovation investment. they just want crank the handle financials.

The bigger issue is on the model front, can Google compete; Gemini doesnt seem to be able to compete on the heavy expert end; they are doing well on lighter faster models.

gavin_gee··on Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8, and Anthropic's (Potential) Unravelling
seems to me that we are at the asymtote for most usage. sure run the prompts that need the frontier on generic silicon but burning the fable 5 model into silicon could be perfectly viable
gavin_gee··on We do not think Anthropic should be designated as a supply chain risk
its the definition of a free market that RAM prices have increased. supply and demand.
gavin_gee··on We do not think Anthropic should be designated as a supply chain risk
its all bullshit
gavin_gee··on We do not think Anthropic should be designated as a supply chain risk
sorry but I dont think a private company should dictate country policy as set by elected leaders.

who the hell do you think you are virtue signalling your opinion on the world

gavin_gee··on Vodafone admits 'major outage' as more than 130,000 report problems
anything to do with the massive DDOS attacks that Krebs has been reporting against US carriers?
gavin_gee··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
i swear the single best feature for me would be:

take my photo catalog stored in google photos, apple pictures, Onedrive, Amazon photos. collate into a single store, dedupe. Then build a proper timeline and geo/map view for all the photos.

gavin_gee··on A Love Letter to People Who Believe in People

gavin_gee··on U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users' encrypted accounts
With the increased caliber of software folks in Trumps orbit, my sense is we will have a much more informed decision from the Whitehouse on this topic and whether the US should weigh into the fray with the UK.

as a side note, its really baffling what this capability would actually provide for? Any serious criminal isn't using icloud backup or even an iPhone in the first place. So this is just a shit outcome for the general population.

If this goes through, I look forward to the news of the world expose on some cabinet members personal details

gavin_gee··on I will never need to buy a new computer again
it's often a corporate's need for new revenue and security that causes the machine to march on. Just look at this TPM Win 10 upgrade issue.

My 2011 i5 desktop is still happily chugging away as a build server, home storage, and remote host. But oh yes, it will have to be nuked, thanks to MSFT policies.

gavin_gee··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
cursor is kicking vscode's butt because it has multi models. also MS is hedging bets against OpenAI. that relationship is not easy
gavin_gee··on Using reinforcement learning and $4.80 of GPU time to find the best HN post

LLM's are enabling a reimagination of UI. Wheres the biggest opportunity in UI that hasn't kept up to date? legacy and regulated software in the long tail. Thats the disruption opportunity for LLM's.
gavin_gee··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
clearly, google hasn't paid enough campaign donations vis-a-vis Microsoft.

This is just political corruption feigning as doing the right thing for the country.

we are having the wrong debate and are being distracted by the sideshow.

in many ways this is a test balloon for public support to go after big tech as a narrative around censorship over misinformation that will explode over the next few years

gavin_gee··on Transformers in music recommendation
I suspect there is no available dataset that can teach the models to learn this. The enjoyment of music is entirely internalized. Skipping a track is an incredibly low fidelity data point.

I've often wondered if Spotify could capture volume control data as part of a track to see if that produces better training data. But again its still too low fidelity.

gavin_gee··on Safe Superintelligence Inc.
This.

Every nation-state will be in the game. Private enterprise will be in the game. Bitcoin-funded individuals will be in the game. Criminal enterprises will be in the game.

How does one company building a safe version stop that?

If I have access to hardware and data how does a safety layer get enforced? Regulations are for organizations that care about public perception, the law, and stock prices. Criminals and nation-states are not affected by these things

It seems to me enforcement is likely only possible at the hardware layer, which means the safety mechanisms need to be enforced throughout the hardware supply chain for training or inference. You don't think the Chinese government or US government will ignore this if its in their interest?

gavin_gee··on Codestral: Mistral's Code Model
what the heck is this for, if you can't use it for commercial work?
gavin_gee··on Stellantis CEO confirms $25k Jeep EV
no chance these incumbent dealers have their fingers deep in politics.

in Seattle companies like Rivian cannot even tell you the price in the retail store due to laws that incumbent dealers pushed through making it illegal know full well that a lack of price will prevent sales.

Tesla is the one exception who was grandfathered in before the law was changed.

gavin_gee··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
Perhaps the planet but definitely not the mind.
gavin_gee··on Apple introduces M4 chip
I'm still rocking an iPad 6th generation. It's a video consumption device only. A faster CPU doesn't enable any new use cases.

The only reason is the consumer's desire to buy more.

gavin_gee··on No one buys books
The licensing costs for Ebooks are unsustainable for library's. The publishers don't want any sharing and so the cost per ebook vs physical is totally out of sync with Ebooks considerably higher. One could argue that publishers are the ones who are strangling the viability of libraries to exist.
gavin_gee··on How did customer service get so bad?
on the counter I think Australian retail is some of the best. fun, low pressure, engaging and helpful.
gavin_gee··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
IMHO This is an excellent decision by Apple.

what is their differentiated value for a car?

It's all downsize. If it didn't end up being amazing consumers would see behind the curtain and judge all their products. Margins on cars are nowhere near phones. I'm not sure there is a ton of cross over benefits from manufacturing small sized electronics vs large cars. Not to mention that apple outsources all of this work.
