gcr··on Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads
How would you differentiate between currency influence and power influence?
gcr··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
OP means that some WiFi antennae are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be easily removed.

When building my PC, I got a PCI WiFi card but it turns out there was also a direct WiFi network interface built into the motherboard somehow

gcr··on Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4
I think linking to TikTok videos saying “vibes? vibes!” in some of the links was a bit below the belt, but understand it takes restraint to maintain NPOV
gcr··on First response from the Project Suncatcher prototype satellite
A competing team at Google already exfiltrated the weights of the model running on the satellite and uploaded them to huggingface! https://huggingface.co/google/gemma-4-E4B
gcr··on Claude Code VS Code extension with backdoor released on Cursor marketplace
Kevin Beaumont says the extension for “VSCode and Cursor” was compromised: https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/117528831681803563
gcr··on Qwenputer: A functioning, deterministic RISC-V CPU inside Qwen3.5
what were you expecting to hear from the model at that point?

I think you got the conversation into a state where any answer would be equally likely to feel profound to you.

gcr··on Qwenputer: A functioning, deterministic RISC-V CPU inside Qwen3.5
Really cool work!

Do note that a custom host runtime is still responsible for loading firmware, booting the CPU to the starting point, and compiling/loading the program to run. While the CPU is running, the host runtime makes sure that only the CPU layers run by manually skipping Qwen’s own layers.

I wish the author would be more forthcoming about these limitations. The central claim about “no external runtime” or “not a plugin” feels a little dishonest to me since this doesn’t work without some pretty invasive changes to the inference driver.

gcr··on Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you bought
If we lived in this world, wouldn’t we expect more games to have a lower initial price / F2P but higher hourly streaming cost?
gcr··on Muse Wonder
Who said anything about Apple? The OP who posted about wipr mentioned using a laptop.
gcr··on Using LLM for confidence scoring is a bad idea
Yes, you can even do this in unpatched llama.cpp!

It's thought to work "better" but score calibration is still a problem.

gcr··on Compromised LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI Installs a Credential Stealer and Backdoor
don't forget today's NodeJS security update addressing its own RCE bugs!
gcr··on PHP 8.2.35
The bug you posted was patched and fixed 6 years ago, and none of the other bugs in the audit showcase that issue. Are you sure these are the right links?
gcr··on [dead]
Link is private or 404, even when logged in.
gcr··on Muse Wonder
My guess (pure speculation) is that Wipr sets the fingerprint to a well-known value for privacy / anonymization reasons, and Meta is indeed using that to suggest related accounts.
gcr··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
That isn’t my experience. I tried compressing conference proceedings into thumbnails with tiny file size and for this purpose I found that JPEGXL is far better than AVIF
gcr··on Leaderboards and speedrun.com's new terms of service
I for one would love to see a History Of Speedrun Community Leaderboards Drama glitchless any% documentary
gcr··on Pi 1.0
for whatever it's worth, thanks for your work on Juggler! i really like the concept (especially the miller columns are really nice), and a small detail but i appreciate the musician's touches you put in the notification chime (randomized according to selected scale)!
gcr··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
well, it's no longer possible to set up Windows with a local account without typing arcane commands in the command prompt during setup, so...
gcr··on Claude partial outage
for those not aware of the reference, "The Machine Stops" was a 1909 novelette by E. M. Forster. It was very forward thinking, and so full of ideas!

gcr··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Because the ICC and Dutch authorities could no longer access their bank accounts or emails because of sanctions Microsoft chose to enforce .
gcr··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
should there be? bikes use a fraction of the energy from EVs, aren’t their owners benefitting from lower cost-of-ownership either way?
gcr··on 2DWillNeverDie
what do you mean? Every 3D game is played on a 2D manifold except for like, 6DOF flight games or lucid blocks
gcr··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
Silly question: how do we know that the decrypted message is correct?

Isn’t it feasible that a given ciphertext could mean any number of different things under different settings? If so, we don’t know whether this setting happens to match a plausible plaintext or whether this really was the plaintext the sender intended to send.

gcr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Most people won’t bother to check that, and all underage users will have that checked. This method still has perfect recall and very high precision.
gcr··on Can gzip be a language model?
seconding others' request to try with zstd! I'd be very curious what something like zstd -14 would give you
gcr··on OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev
gosh, for wanting TypeSafe to survive, this fellow just handed OpenAI detailed instructions and ideas for defeating them...
gcr··on Divide by depth for instant 3D
Rick Szeliaki’s “Computer vision algorithms and applications” has a lot of great motivation for homogeneous coordinates in the first chapter and appendix. For example, in 2D, the cross product between two points in homogeneous coordinates is the line joining them, and the cross product between two lines in homogeneous coordinates is their point of intersection.
gcr··on The Inference Hardware Revolution of 2026
hang on, isn't this the standard way to implement IEEE 754 floating-point multiply since forever?

normalize the two numbers A and B to have the same exponent, add the mantissa, then convert back to IEEE 754?

gcr··on Glyph Immersive
Context? I’m not sure what I’m looking at here
gcr··on Proposed Rule: Eliminating the Discretionary 60-Day Grace Period
That’s not standard practice for USA tech companies.

A WARN notice includes text like “such-and-such org headcount to be reduced by 36 by Sep 11,” and doesn’t include specific names.

Google bricks your MacBook and revokes your corporate account access the moment they make the decision. You may be notified via personal email if you properly set that up in Workday, otherwise you will have to ask your manager via off-corp channels what happened.
