gdm85··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
> I blew up my Ubuntu install and switched back to Debian. I haven't missed Ubuntu at all.

What are the biggest drawbacks? I know you said you don't miss Ubuntu at all, but is there anything which is causing you pain because it works differently or is just missing?

gdm85··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
How does it compare to using Ubuntu with Ansible? Do you ever miss being on mainline stable Ubuntu/Debian when using NixOS?

I had never heard about this, but from the nicely written manual it looks like a neat OS.

Since the source code is available I could not resist porting "lc" (List files in categories and columns): https://github.com/gdm85/lc

If you have nostalgia of that command you can now enjoy it on your modern Linux!

gdm85··on We’ve decided to rename Riot
I know it is a possible real usage, but it is not the most common. You cannot ignore that when branding a project/product.
gdm85··on We’ve decided to rename Riot
> Secondly, we picked the name “Riot” to evoke something disruptive and vibrant - like a “riot of colour.”

Really? This reminds me of "newspeak".

gdm85··on The Wolfram Physics Project
The concept of "connectives" as explained in Frank Herbert's Whipping Star book comes to mind.

One critic remark to make: I am not impressed by the "complex looks" of the hypergraphs because the initial premise is that it does not matter how we visualise them.

gdm85··on Grupeer Suspends Payments to Investors
> That's why they froze this thing...

You're picturing it "too honest": there are allegations of misconduct which I am afraid (given the bad quality of the recent official posts) might be true, see for example:

No, sorry :) there are levels which absolutely require the sacrifice (regular levels and the special ones too)

Please change the URL to use https, the website supports both protocols.
gdm85··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
> you can use docker-autoheal or something similar to automatically restart those processes

I consider it sloppy to accept that a process will crash and become unresponsive as a normal fact of life, and that subsequently they have to be automatically restarted. A process should stay put at what it was designed to do. Reasons for the crash/unresponsiveness should be investigated (memory leaks, race conditions etc) and not swept under a carpet with an automatic restart.

gdm85··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime
> In the end, the system I put in place had 97% fewer processes (from 629 to 20) while providing all the same capabilities.

I am suspicious of this statement. Is the author now supporting the company and defacto replacing the guy that left?

That's because a reality like Michael Crichton's novels is fun to imagine, albeit...fictional.

gdm85··on Report on the Bezos Phone Hack [pdf]
They lost me at "encrypted downloader". The WhatsApp video attachment format allows for...a downloader? I strongly doubt that.

Perhaps what they should have written is that they cannot decrypt the video and thus check for an exploit within it (it's commonly called payload, because it doesn't have to be a downloader...).

I see from other comments here that I am not the only one doubting the report wording at the very least.

gdm85··on If we weren’t the first industrial civilization on Earth, would we ever know?
If another civilization had reached space-faring technology then one day they might come back and discover that the (perhaps inhospitable) home planet...harbors again life. Probably too far-fetched and better suited as material for a scifi story, but the idea is interesting.
