geekfactor··on Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-8 Max Experienced Dutch Roll
I didn't know what it was called, but I've experienced mild Dutch Roll enough on flights, usually on the approach or landing, that I didn't realize that it was all that rare or dangerous. I had come to think of it as a normal result of wind shear. I imagine it's a matter of degree, and I wish there was some mention of the magnitude of the Dutch Roll in this case vs what is considered normal or acceptable.

(Edited to qualify my experience as "mild".)

geekfactor··on Ask HN: What audio resources can improve my technical skills during my commute?
Looks like I'm a little late to the party on this one, but I'd like to recommend my This Week in Machine Learning and AI podcast here: https://twimlai.com

I try to maintain a good mix of topics and viewpoints (industry/application vs researcher), and to keep the conversation technically interesting.

Happy to answer any questions here.

geekfactor··on Ask HN: What podcasts are you listening to?
Thought I'd add my own pod to this great list. I certainly listen to it :)

geekfactor··on Show HN: Gping.io – Like TinyURL for your car
How about just "get a URL for your car"?
geekfactor··on GiveDirectly Planning to Give $30M in Basic Income to East Africa
FYI the April 13 show of the Freakonomics Podcast takes on the question "Is the World Ready for a Guaranteed Basic Income?" and mentions some of the prior studies noted in this article.

geekfactor··on Del.icio.us has been down since it's “migration” on Sunday
Have you also forgotten about pinboard? Just curious because the story is the same for me, and I've since forgotten about pinboard too. I had the same "oh, that's still around?" reaction during the recent Pinboard/Zapier kerfuffle.
geekfactor··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers
Just ran into this the other day. A popular ride sharing app has a huge security hole wherein if you get a recycled mobile number you can easily gain access to the account details of the previous owner of the number and run up a bill on their credit card.
geekfactor··on Ask HN: What's the most useful online course you have watched?
Coursera/UPenn's Aerial Robotics course (https://www.coursera.org/learn/robotics-flight) and more broadly the robotics sequence.

I'm taking now for a diversion (just started) and expect to learn a bit about quadrotor mechanics, sensors & control systems.

geekfactor··on New 'hog-nosed rat' discovered in Indonesia
"The rats have since been preserved and are lodged in a museum in Indonesia."

Yes, this seems like the right thing to do upon discovering a new species.

geekfactor··on The Absurdity of LinkedIn
Along the same lines, but worse... If you're signed up for the emails they send out about top news in your network or news mentions of people in your network, and you click through the links in the email, they make you log in. From your phone. To read a news article. Drives me insane.

geekfactor··on I Flew to Lagos and Got Beaten Up Because of a Nigerian Email Scam
Seriously? Could you really even get $1,300 (or equivalent) in a single draw from an ATM in Lagos in 2002?

Update:

Found this article [1] stating that before 10/2012 the limit was 100,000 NGN, which at the end of 2002 traded at about 125 to the dollar [2]. That would put the withdrawal limit at about 800 dollars, but I'm not sure that's far off enough to call this article a fraud.

geekfactor··on Gifpop.io – Print gifs with the magic of lenticular printing

geekfactor··on Foggy Periods, just a confused thought dump
Hi, I'm interested in learning more about your project. If you're interested, please reach out to me via the email address in my profile.
geekfactor··on Ask HN: When to give up?
People often refer to Seth Godin's The Dip as a book that helps address this question. Personally, I didn't find it all that insightful, but I'm mentioning it here anyway to solicit others' opinions.
geekfactor··on The quiet successes that drive Silicon Valley
I don't think you're arguing for the opposite of what I'm proposing and I agree with you. I would just like to see some substance, whether in broad terms of the overall market or a narrower look at specific firms.
geekfactor··on The quiet successes that drive Silicon Valley
How is this anything more than a self-interested puff piece? (As an investor, the founders' success is his success, right?)

The topic is an interesting one, and an article exploring the net impact of under-the-radar companies versus the high fliers on the Silicon Valley, US and global economies, particularly one that presents some data, could be very enlightening.

geekfactor··on Show HN: Learn English with movies and TV Shows
What would be the equivalent french show for going the other way? I found Braquo on Hulu and started watching/translating/studying it, but realized pretty quickly that most of what they say should not be said in good company.
geekfactor··on McAfee’s Third World Travel Guide
Anyone know of someplace similar for French? I've read that Ste. Anne Guadeloupe is a good place to go, but 100 schools?
geekfactor··on McAfee’s Third World Travel Guide
It may just be that I don't have McAfee's cajones, but much of his advice herein seems like a surefire way to, at best, end up locked up in some South or Central American prison for the rest of your life; at worst, end up face down in some ditch someplace.
geekfactor··on At what income number does S-Corp save you money over a Sole Proprietorship
FWIW, the OP seems to be equating "sole proprietorship" and the disregarded entity status of their LLC. As such, the liability cautions you make might not apply directly to their situation.

I'd like to see a fork Ghost as a Rails app. Anyone game?
