Yeah Claude Code is one example where I use dictation most of the time (unless I'm in the office). Even if I take back some things that I say there it can be useful context for the LLM to parse and understand what I'm doing. The thing is that for long emails, long text messages, or in general when I have to think about what I want to communicate and I have to write decently, ASR isn't helping me as much as I thought it would. Maybe I'm using it in the wrong way, and I could build a better pipeline if I added LLM postprocessing to my text, but I don't have enough memory on my computer for this kind of task yet.

I expected dictation to be much more useful on the computer, but since I can type decently fast I find myself using it far less than I expected.

The good thing with most NNs is that you can go with fp32 almost always (I put almost because I'm not 100% sure that this covers all the cases) for almost 0 performance degradation. For Parakeet I'm 100% sure because I used it yesterday and it was using just 1GB.

Why do you use GLM 5.3 tho? Unless you have an instance running "free" 24/7 you could use a local Gemma model. It should be good enough, no? Or maybe with openrouter it's cheap enough for such simple requests to be considered free?

Yeah I remember going to my physics professor super excited about LK-99 to ask him if he heard about it, and him just telling me "yes but stuff like that happens twice per year, they will find something is off", and in fact it's what happened...

I hope that with Opus 5.5 they will be able to fix more bugs in the next version of macos, in the meantime I will stay on Sonoma. This is really disappointing since Golden Gate was supposed to be a bugfix update

How is it possible that I have never seen before? Some months ago I got an iPod classic 5 and I modded it with the usual stuff (battery, micro sd, clear case). Unfortunately it has been a tough repair so I have spent approximately 100 euros on it (50 for the iPod and 50 in parts) but it still isn't as good as I would like it and I still need to use wired headphones, which is ok to do while at home or in the office, but it becomes kind of a hassle when you go outside. If I had seen this earlier I would have bought it.

but there is a difference between deterministic compilation and non-deterministic LLM code. Of course I don't think this is an issue for toy problems and simple codebases, but for non-trivial problems I think it will be an issue. When I compile C code I know that maybe it will not be as efficient as it could be if I had written it in Assembly, but there will be a biunivocal correspondence between C and Assembly. If instead I use an LLM to rewrite a feature of a codebase I can't be sure that it still functions like the original one. I acknowledge that this is an issue with human programmers too, but I don't see a clear way forward, even if I'm really interested in LLM compilers being a thing. Maybe we will use them for non important code, and we will keep writing system critical stuff by hand.

It was difficult to not notice them. Opus 5 was unusable, most of my team went back to Opus 4.6 for most of their work. I hope we can move forward now.

I would say bettery is about the same of iOS 26, but mine is quite cooked (78% battery health) and I have to replace it.

Performance is for sure better. Not as much as I expected (I expected to notice it everyday), and I can't give you a number, but I remember that I noticed stuff being faster the first couple of days that I installed the beta, but now I got used to it

No, not exaggerating at all, but I'm not a power user of the phone. I just do really simple stuff, and I didn't find new bugs, just old ones. But obviously that's my experience... The most noticeable stuff was the app launch speed.

I am currently on Sonoma and I was considering to upgrade to get the things that I missed in these years. I think and hope that macOS 27 will be faster wrt Sonoma...

Usually I wait until december to install the new iOS on my phone, since most of the time I don't care about the upgrades. This time I installed iOS 27 beta on my phone since the public beta was out, and I had 0 new bugs compared to iOS 26, but it hasn't been the big relief that I hoped for.

Now I am worried about what the new versions of iOS will bring us, I hope that the "we removed the crap" wasn't just a thing of this year, and that iOS will go back to high software standards. Phone prices are really high for me now, and I would like for my poor little iphone 13 to survive another couple of years.

It depends on what your definition of "small" is. If you consider the iPhone 13 mini as small the only thing that comes to mind is the Unihertz Jelly Max.

I am currently using both an apple watch SE 2 and a garmin vivoactive 5 simultaneously. Even if the Garmin has better battery life, I don't really like it for 2 reasons: - the round watch UI is ugly and doesn't work with the other UI elements. Also I don't mind using a squared watch, I like it. My Casio is also square-ish. - the UX is terrible, the customization is terrible. The default watch faces are all quite ugly, and the Garmin app makes the customization experience even worse.

Also, I feel like the sleep is more accurate on the Apple watch than on the Garmin from a couple episodes that happened and in general from the differences in tracking time.

Also, as you already said, I just charge the watch everyday while I shower, so battery life is not really an issue for 80% of the time. For the other 20% it's really annoying... but I think a newer model (and I hope that the new ones will be even better on that side) will have better battery life. When the battery life will be ~48 hours it will be perfect for me.

This is actually a really good thing imo. If they didn't care about benchmaxxing it means that they really know that what they have in hand is good.

I am actively using Gemini flash to "translate" what Opus says into human language. I let opus do the design (with my assistance) and implementation, but then the report that Opus writes gets translated by Gemini so that I don't have to waste time to understand it.

Just by seeing the title I knew it was going to be like the meme of Obama giving himself a medal. Why are they even doing this? Are there still people that trust LLM benchmarks made by the LLM companies? It seems to me that the only people still using Claude are the ones that have it for free at work (me). Some of my colleagues even started using their own private OpenAI subscriptions to avoid using Claude, others are using Gemini flash to decipher what Claude is saying...

Even if Ilya didn't really create this list I have a very good opinion about every paper on this page that I've read (most of them) so I think it's a great resource. Lately during my off time I want to do something related to AI research (which I am already doing full time atm so I need something light) and I am for sure going to read through this.

Maybe I downplayed it too much but I really think this is still "in distribution" (we always have to remember that we are tech savy people and we influence the people that surround us). I see the value, but in my opinion it's not a generational opportunity, but a great acceleration. We are treating it like generational opportunity. That's why I say "everyone know there will be a crash, but noone knows how big that will be". The AI industry is not (in my opinion obviously) worth $ 391B [1] of added value.

While I agree on the smell I think that the situations are really different. I am not an economist but I think that other than the situation of the huge amount of money in play we are in a really different case. The general user (and I have noticed it especially with today's WWDC) basically doesn't get any benefit from AI (neither LLMs, image generation or photo editing). They were promised living like in Wall-e in 5 years and they are basically still living the same life. White collar jobs slightly benefited from the LLMs and same with programmers (while many say that they can get huge leverage the public results of what software companies produce didn't get the same benefit). Everyone knows the market will crash, nobody knows how much.

In Italy they are really frowned upon by developers. They add 0 value. And it's not like "Oh, VC firms add 0 value to companies they acquire", this is really messed up.

Maybe they don't have enough racks. The news indicate that China isn't in a really good situation with GPUs, so probably they want to keep most of them for other stuff. Also because since the price is so cheap they probably want to use the other GPUs for stuff that has higher margins.
