geodel··on European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative
Soon, there will be vibe fabricated chips in our computers and machines. Can't wait for coming hardware revolution.
geodel··on European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative
Ah okay, I was thinking something like Central Processing Embedded Units.
geodel··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
I mean in US these TV dinners, all these frozen foods are just way of life. Could it be that some good European citizens are angry with frozen foods and it is just their way of telling "EAT FRESH FOOD".
geodel··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Good thing is now human does not have to justify anymore. If AI says bugs management seems far more amenable to support fixing. At least in my experience managers take AI reports or vendor tool generated reports more seriously then any feedback from engineer.
geodel··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I will compare to my cordless hair trimmer, that damn thing does not even last 10 mins.
geodel··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
Well lately they are capturing their customers' margin for sure.
geodel··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
Indeed. I read this news around that time. I thought just now they did second round of AI purge.
geodel··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
It might. Have you translated all PHP to Rust via AI over a weekend. That would be key to beat Facebook in its own game.
geodel··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
> some big companies hire people just so that their competitors can't have them.

True. Also true that this was ZIRP phenomenon predominantly in big tech. And once mass layoffs started in big tech most of those ultra elite engineers/staff either retired or took job at lower pay instead of launching competitors to big tech.

geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
One more thing: Don't hit the door on your way out!
geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
It could be an enterprise product bundled with some MS365 SKUs. They know a lot of MS customers would need such thing in coming years.
geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
To me it does not seem like any bigger conspiracy than people always wanted to pay less and earn more at the same time.
geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I think by now companies are not under any illusion that they can precisely pinpoint bottom 25% of employees. Their reasonable efforts are about separating out few folks they absolutely want to keep in business continuity sense. Rest below average, average, above average, "best" are fair game.
geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I think you are right. Besides this "Best" category is also fluid. Best of 2000's is not best in 2020s for a business.

This also works as price discovery mechanism for both parties. Best employee can take a break and apply later for different job, profile, growth industry etc. Companies also find better to hire what they think best at market price instead of honorary best which are there for long time.

geodel··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Can't be software engineers, from what I learned they were never really paid commensurate to value they delivered. So it must be quite economical to keep them around.
geodel··on Anthropic S-1
Well, unlike Apple a lot of very aggressive investors in Anthropic are riding on its trillion dollars valuation. They just can't on their own decide to stop or slow down.
geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Indian government:

1) On my friends' mistake/fraud/crime: strongly worded letter.

2) On my ememies': ED raids, arrest with no bail for years.

geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Well you are not thinking in wrong direction. In their world view India is IT superpower and the whole world already depends on them.

To think of reasoning may help them course correct is wishful thinking. Read about Indian pharma sector and what kind crappy, dangerous drugs they are peddling to world.

This is confident, resurgent India . Reason, competency are racist words if used agaist them.

geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
You say comedy gold. However in Vishwaguru Indian universe they are much vaunted South Indian Brahmins who anyone in the world accept that they are the best in anything they do. Hence they are pure gold.
geodel··on Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest
Agree. Why does Google need land to store data in first place, when they can just keep data in hard disks or SSDs etc.
geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Well Indian regulator must have visited office canteen to see no unapproved food was served there.

Only when fully satisfied they'd have given license to operate this security business.

geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
And it will be even easier for them provided they praise right leaders.

But more importantly they don't need to any such name change. For people who matter in India it is just some random incident which Anti-Indian entities are whining about.

geodel··on eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business;
Maybe. But not in place where this company resides and does business with the government.
geodel··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Not to give into conspiracy theories but this company might be ideologically even if not materially aligned to current regime in India. With right kind of nudge any kind business contract is possible without any competency.
geodel··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
Wow. Seems people do love it. My thought was always there could be no cheaper or worse snack that airlines can offer
geodel··on America Didn't Lose Its Rare Earth Industry. It Sold It
I don't think its Xi's doing vs Globalist looking only for signals which confirmed their views and ignored or outrightly rejected everything contrary.
geodel··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
This 40 hr/week need to be combined with

1) Increasing job/economic insecurity.

2) Prices rising faster then income for majority of population.

3) increasing commute time around employment, activity hubs

4) kids activities/sports are now taken as seriously as work project deliverables. Previously it could be just gifted kids in school teams now with pay-to-play a lot more kids are involved in "serious sports".

geodel··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
Agree.

I went first time with office team this year a couple of weeks back. Needless to say whole experience was atrocious. No common reference, movies, sports, TV and so on to talk about besides work. It was just: "Oh, what do you do on weekend? I do x,y,z " in a round-robbin manner.

It was definitely not good time, or even bad time one can remember, just an insipid gathering for 3 hours of doing nothing. $8 for a beer and $15-20 per person for lukewarm food not sure I'll be excited for another meet any time soon.

geodel··on Americans' Social Activity Has Steeply Declined in the Past 30 Years
At this point I think your experience can be multiplied by millions and still be quite accurate.
geodel··on Our $445M Series D
Its simple. Go to Google then. FAANG gang is decades older than Oxide and 3-4 order of magnitude higher revenue. They can hire hundreds of people a year who never do an hour of useful work in a year and still be fine. A startup can't do that.
