georgel··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
I wouldn't call turning on CloudFlare's bot blocker an "absurd amount of effort" from the perspective of site owners.

But getting around it sure is annoying, sometimes I get flagged IP's from Comcast and can't visit sites like costco.com despite not doing any questionable stuff on my network.

georgel··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
There are companies that provide proxy services for scraping services, and residential proxies route through consumer networks (like Comcast) which is flagged less than a datacenter IP.

Many questionable TV streaming boxes pretend to deliver you video, but in reality they are also piggy backing on your personal ISP to power those companies.

georgel··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
With the quality of content on Reddit in recent years, I think you are better off not opening the site. The good ol' days where "some topic" +reddit have been long gone.
georgel··on Mac at any scale
Back in the early/mid 2010's when I was still a native iOS dev, I remember interviewers would ask how do you code sign an app.

And when they started trying to "automate" the process, it was a roll of the dice if it would work.

I have been out of that game for last 5 years, but I occasionally still open Xcode and it _seems_ it works most of the time.

georgel··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
Just installed it, it's funny their landing page is littered with every AI buzzword too. But I am going to give Insomnia a try, I've heard people talk about it and a few others on HN over the years. I just need a glorified cURL GUI at the end of the day.
georgel··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
Postman went from a great lightweight tool to a bloated up-selling mess.

georgel··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
I would totally go to a Halo theme park, that sounds cool.
georgel··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
Interesting, if the cache hit is that good, I think HN convinced me to toss $20 at DS official, and see how long that lasts.
georgel··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
I'm all in for saving money and _can_ move to using DS directly from them, but maybe I am missing something here:

OpenRouter Pricing:

$0.02/M input tokens $0.60/M output tokens

DeepSeek Pricing (cache miss, off-peak):

$0.15/M Input $0.60/m output

georgel··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
I am curious how you managed to spend that much on Deepseek via OpenRouter. I loaded $100 back in July while using v4-flash or whatever the cheap good model was at the time, and have upgraded as the new ones came out from Deepseek. I still have $16 and some of that spend also goes towards the AI usage from my customers (the context they need to load in is quite large too).

And I am using the Claude Code harness with DS as the endpoint. And I use it ~5-8hrs a day to do my coding.

georgel··on Codex Pricing: Pro has unlimited 5.6 usage
And just like those "unlimited" plans, the disclaimer always reads speeds slow down after N GB transferred/mo. If this unlimited tokens world happens, I expect vendors to start throttling or downgrading models.

Network neutrality meet token neutrality.

georgel··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
When I lived in the area about 6 years ago, I had 3rd party recruiters reach out to me about roles that they don't list. The whole region it felt like was 70% contractors (W-2 with the contracting firm), until the company really liked you and bought out your contract and converted you to an actual employee.

Surprisingly I had better benefits at the two contracting firms than what employees were getting.

georgel··on Yen weakens past ¥160 per dollar, eroding intervention gains
From one George to another, this is the way. My close friends don’t bother with Venmo or the like.
georgel··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
Work only allows the tools they buy. So at least for me, I am stuck with Claude. At home for personal projects I am a fan of DeepSeek v4 Flash.
georgel··on Stripe acquires Clerky
> controls all of the early incorporation infrastructure

You don't need to rely on Stripe to do anything. There are other payment gateways, and you can file things yourself (or hire someone).

Do they make things very easy and accessible for a smaller fee than doing it yourself, yes.

MacOS 27 drops Intel support, but 10 years of updates is a long run. The 2015 MBPs were so good.
georgel··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
I really like what they did with the MBP redesign, reminds me of the PowerBook G4 Titanium aesthetic. The hardware to me is great, but the OS has gone very downhill. If I had a Snow Leopard era-ish build of OSX + modern security I would be perfectly happy. Settings.app is a disaster, same goes for recent iOS versions.

Apple Music must have been written by an intern or outsourced, how can you have a music playing app crash and do a System Report just by hitting the previous song button.

georgel··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
I have an M2 Pro MBP 16GB, compared to the latest MBP issued by my employer a couple months ago, I see zero difference in real world performance. Can’t speak for Office on Mac, I have not used it in over a decade, but for typical full stack web dev I literally don’t need anything more.
georgel··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
I had the OG white Zune. It was the same price as an iPod ~$250. The reason I chose Zune was the Zune Pass. A precursor to Spotify. Plus growing up in the Seattle area, I knew other people who had them and we would trade songs.
georgel··on The August 17 outage
On the topic of translation/ language learning, I still find Google Translate better for when I need to type emails in Russian (my older family who only speak it) as far as grammar is concerned than what LLMs spit out.
georgel··on Stripe will reportedly acquire OpenRouter for $7B+
Feature bloat definitely made their API and product docs harder than the early days. Stripe Checkout would have saved my teams days, but I agree, they need to go back to their roots and make the 99% use case very easy.
georgel··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
My middle school circa 2004 in CT started at 7:30am. Similarly I was on swim team and we started practice around 5:30am in a Seattle suburb.
georgel··on Ethical Cold Outreach
Right there with you. All the products I have built are not interesting to the HN or ProductHunt crowd. I don't even bother in those channels. Anyone reading this, find the places that are actually relevant to your customers.

I get a lot of office cleaning / janitorial spam (I don't have an office) alongside the dev shop spam. Just checked my junk SMS folder, I had 5 SMS messages for "fundraising" for a company gone 10 years ago. It is non-stop.

georgel··on Ethical Cold Outreach
I wish BDR's and AE's could just answer the important questions I have for them in the first call. I have wasted countless hours of my life sitting in sales meetings, when my wallet is already open.

It really shouldn't be that hard, I even would do the work of "hey this is our expected usage, I have already adjusted for an overage buffer, how much?".

georgel··on Ethical Cold Outreach
The comments on cold outreach on HN are always going to be negative. I assume the majority of us here are developers and go to insane lengths to block "spammers".

That said, even YC (can't find the exact Dalton + Michael episode) encourages cold outreach. If it didn't work, people wouldn't still be doing it.

georgel··on 50k Boat Names
I had these exact buttons come from DeepSeek for a demo landing page, it went down a path it called “memphis design”.
