ghilston··on Best LLM for every budget, updated daily
What would you personally recommend for those that have 128 GB?
ghilston··on Ask HN: How do you guys keep up with the most cost-effective AI models?
Our of curiosity what do you use to run this? An actual cron or a tool like hermes etc
ghilston··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
As someone who hasn't used Work or Codex but has used Claude Code and Pi a lot, may you describe how to set this up? I'm interested enough to try this out
ghilston··on Ask HN: Who uses open LLMs and coding assistants locally? Share setup and laptop
I have a m4 max mbp with 128 gb. What model would you folks recommend? I'd ideally like to integrate with a tool that can auto read context like Claude code (via a proxy) or cline. I'm open to any advice
ghilston··on Blog Feeds
I've tried a few solutions and have landed on just storing them in an unordered list in a markdown file
ghilston··on Experimenting with Local LLMs on macOS
Okay will do. Yeah, I just finished my calendar reading code. I haven't prepared the data for my LLM ingestion yet. Sounds great, I'll refresh this thread in a few days
ghilston··on Experimenting with Local LLMs on macOS
Any willingness to share this script? I've been working on some code to ingest things and summarize for them and I haven't gotten to email just yet.
ghilston··on Run a legal LTE network at home for $100
Wifi calling unfortunately has its quirks even if it could be used
ghilston··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
Warcraft 3 remains my favorite game to this day, simply due to the sheer volume of custom maps you could play.

I can't explain how excited I was for the Reforged version of the game and how disappointed I was when it flopped.

My favorite part of games is learning the mechanics and coming up with strategies. Which paired well with an endless supply of new game modes to try.

I have been unable to find any modern game that is both active and has a series of custom maps. If anyone knows of any, please let me know.

ghilston··on Why Metaflow?
I was a big fan of Metaflow a few years back. I thought it was neat how I could write some code and easily run some functions locally versus remote.

Hey Savin, it's been a while since chatted. I hope things are going well ;)

For those unaware, onsone of the co

Anyone know if something similar exists for raycast?

Thanks!

Interesting! Your website does not explain what the free tier limits are. Can you explain those?
ghilston··on Two new PebbleOS watches
I have an original backer watch and bought one when they launched. Both stopped working within maybe 6 months and support at the time suggested I just buy another...
ghilston··on Beej's Guide to Git
Hey Beej, can you talk about what tool you use to create your guides? I'm assuming something like pandoc is involved for supporting your various formats?
ghilston··on How to turn off Apple Intelligence
Definitely no need but more of curiosity and current smith of time I'm willing to spend on my site.

I've had my site for many years and the analytics set up were set up from the start. The amount of free time I can decorate to my site and the length of my blocks of free time have drastically changed, which made me focus the time I spend on my site to only writing. I have a large backlog of non writing things I wish to do, but can't justify them as of right now.

I'm going to remove the UI tracking component as I never look at the data. It was just something I thought was neat and was exploring for a work situation at the time.

The usage of GA is nice as it tells me what posts are popular but that's really not important in the grand scheme of things. As I always blog about what I find interesting regardless of how popular it is.

So in short, if I was willing to dedicate my time I spend on my site to non blogging right now, is rip out our of the analytics tool. And look for a replacement on the other, or rip it out entirely.

The flip phone component was mostly to decrease the availability of distractions in my life. Which doesn't necessarily mean I'm against analytics but yeah. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for taking an interest in my setup :)

ghilston··on How to turn off Apple Intelligence
I don't post on hacker news often so forgive me if sharing a link to my own blog post is not kosher. I'll remove it if so.

I've been experimenting with using a flip phone for a few months now. It's got some quirks and has been more interesting of a switch then I thought.

I wrote about it here:

https://www.greghilston.com/post/switching-to-a-flip-phone/

Disclaimer, I have two analytics JS libraries running. One is gA, the other is one I've been meaning to rip out but haven't yet. I also want to add a comment system that ties into say GitHub posts or something else. Open to any advice on making these posts more "hacker" friendly

ghilston··on Show HN: Simple to build MCP servers that easily connect with custom LLM calls
I came here to share the same link as I found it, and saw you already provided it :)

Thanks!

ghilston··on Show HN: Simple to build MCP servers that easily connect with custom LLM calls
I hadn't heard of miracope before, so thanks for sharing. I like how the website shows examples of source code for interscting with different providers using miracope and not. That was exactly what I was interested in.

With respect to MCP servers, I saw the comment below about integration with librechat. Is there any other documentation on integrations with other self host able solutions? Be it ollama or other.

ghilston··on We're bringing Pebble back
I loved my pebble and ended up backing the original product and buying a second. Both broke and when I reached out to support they said there was nothing they could do...

I loved the devices but that put a pretty bad taste in my mouth for longevity

ghilston··on Ask HN: Is maintaining a personal blog still worth it?
To answer your question in the title, it is still worth it to me, as I get a lot of joy by writing. Pretty much as you put it, there's value to me for writing for it's own sake. Even if no one is reading. It's a cherry on top of someone stumbles upon my posts.

It just so happens two individuals have reached out to me in the past week, saying they enjoyed what I wrote and one of them cited that I saved them time. That just feels incredible.

To answer your questions I don't find my readers at all. I share my content when relevant on reddit or here. I keep writing because I enjoy it.

I'll link my blog post and will remove if asked to:

ghilston··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
I appreciate the sentiment :)
ghilston··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
Shamelessly sharing my own writeup on how to set this up on your Mac

ghilston··on This Word Does Not Exist
Same, I had neovim. Which maybe isn't a Webster dictionary word, but is funny nontheless
ghilston··on I stopped worrying and learned to love denormalized tables
Can you explain why that sounds boring?

I ask, as my preference would be to do the boring thing and install a binary locally. Like how one generally uses git for example.

ghilston··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
I used to love Second Life back in the day. Can you tell us more about your "game" , and less about the technical details? I know this is HN, but what would you tell a prospective player about your game?
ghilston··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
My website has given me a place to share projects I've done or small snippets I've learned about. I am always writing as if I am the audience, as I'm referring to it quite often.

Over time I've noticed that readership has increased and I've started to get comments from readers either asking for additional help or offering advice. With that also comes a ton of companies offering their paid services to improve my seo ranking....

Overall, it's a nice stress-free place to write.

ghilston··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
It would be incredible if a chat gpt competitor came into the self host able, open source, niche like stable diffusion.

The options I've seen today are no where near as good as chat gpt

ghilston··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
> Briefly looking through your posts, I'm not 100% sure what differentiates the project posts from the others

Yeah, that's exactly what I think the problem is. I arbitrary consider a one thing a project and another thing a post.

Understood, thanks for your advice!

ghilston··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
https://www.greghilston.com/

I'm pretty torn on having a separation between the notion of "posts" and "projects". I don't keep the project section up to date very often, and probably should remove it. Any thoughts/advice on this HN?
