ghostly_s··on Show HN: Uberblok – an interactive museum of ZFS internals
If you can't be bothered to copy edit the gratingly AI prose, I can't be bothered to read it.
ghostly_s··on Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation
> modern 'you have to use the command line and should know how to code' Drupal

I get needing to have command line skills for a web framework upgrade (doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation to me), but why on earth would an upgrade require writing your own code?

ghostly_s··on My Friend Bob Cringely
Yeah, frankly the guy seemed like a real cad. I've always recognized the name as someone who was "around" the tech world, but never was clear to me he did or said anything interesting. This does not dispel that impression.
ghostly_s··on Theranos.world
Immediately crashes on my phone, is this something related to Nathan Fielder's new doc?
ghostly_s··on Adobe Creative Suite Cleanroom Port to Rust
What DMCA protections could Adobe use against this? Surely the look-and-feel case established they can't trademark their signature keyboard shortcuts?
ghostly_s··on In the wake of Tippett Studios’ closure, a digital archive appears online
If you look through the isos, it's actually a pretty slight sliver of (presumably) what exists. Most features just have a couple promo reels of the final shots and a handful of WIP stills, not much that shows their process. Also seems to only cover later projects that were mostly cg work. Hopefully someone at the studio grabbed the more substantial stuff?
ghostly_s··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
What was that US robotics startup that got tons of press like a decade ago for their "human safe" cobot you were supposed to be able to program by just dragging its arm through the motions? It had a goofy LCD face, I want to say the co. was called US Robotics or something but changed their name, all I’m finding is the modem company though.
ghostly_s··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
It's a startup, not a public company. I didn't know what you think your assumptions based on the US are bringing to the conversation. Not Posting is Always an Option.
ghostly_s··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
IDK why all these replies are assuming OP was insinuating some negative judgement. To me, it's interesting that US investors are apparently interested in this EU firm that is pursuing the US market, despite no shortage of US startups in the same space.
ghostly_s··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
OP made clear they were talking about automation engineers, not test or design jobs.
ghostly_s··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
No, not really. That's info the OP could easily Google. The answer to their actual question can only be provided by someone with inside knowledge or access to paywalled trade publications.
ghostly_s··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
Firefox fits that description aside obviously from Chrome extensions, is there something inherently more appealing about the Chrome API? Didn't they just sunset it and replace it with some crippled version that can't even support a decent ad-blocker anyway? I know of a few commercial products that only offer a Chrome extension I guess, but I would consider that those product's problems.
ghostly_s··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
Afaict the niche they attempted to fill is the one Firefox already fills on desktop, a highly customizable browser with extension support. (Firefox does not support extensions on iOS, apparently has no plans to do so, and as I understand the support is somewhat limited on Android as well). I switched for about a year because they delivered what seemed like a serious effort at that with their initial release. After seeing basically zero effort at addressing very fundamental bugs in that support in that year, I switched back. As far as I’m concerned their battle is already lost.

The iOS codebase is the only one that potentially has any value to the OSS community; this kind of "enjoy our garbage!" source release really irks me.

aka the person willing to work for a fraction of their worth.
ghostly_s··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
I think the more common case is listings that are technically "open" but due to slow internal processes, repositioning, etc etc, no work is being done towards filling them that is visible to candidates.

For example, I've personally witnessed situations where the funding for a role gets postponed to next quarter, but my manager just kept it open anyway, either out of fear of missing out on the perfect candidate if they stopped accepting apps, or because it's simply easier than going through the HR process to re-post it in a month.

ghostly_s··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
Workday is the only one of these I’ve heard of or encountered in the US.
ghostly_s··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
Three jobs in 8 years? Seems like a red flag, we want to hire someone who will stick around.[1]

1. (Actual feedback I got in an interview two weeks ago, for a position no sane person would want to stay in for longer than two years.)

"Just email your cv" is literally impossible at many employers today. the app process is absolutely far more onerous for the applicant than it was a generation ago. For a bit of silver lining, I have noticed the "auto-populate from my resume" feature actually works reasonably well on some sites, which was not the case just a couple years ago when I was last looking.

I've noticed 3d printing people have this annoying habit of posting pics of their projects in just low enough res that you can't assess what the surface finish actually looks like. From what I can tell this "pebbled" finish looks uncommonly nice, I wonder if that's a byproduct of the glass fiber material or some post-processing.

I’m interested in your debugging of this device. I’m not interested in what your llm did in the process. Just mention at some point you used one; "Claude led me on this dead end" is not interesting content.

ghostly_s··on Show HN: Hacker News, Without AI
Id like to see news about AI, just not AI tooling or "show hn my new AI project". obviously that's not as trivial to filter.

why wouldnt they? there are no real consequences for an algorithm.

I take it you are referring to this[1], which has nothing to do with training.

That's weird, the product page says "TXT, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, JPG, PNG" and prominently claims it is good for manga, which definitely wouldn't be possible with those formats.
