ghusto··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
Logic is logic, you don't need a specialist's opinion on every aspect of a specialist field. I've had eye opening insights delivered to me on problems I'm working on by people who barely know how to use a computer.
ghusto··on I Returned My iPhone Duo
The way I do it is not to read any reviews or comments until about 6 months later. I have no pressing need to buy produx-x before that. I could also wait years, depending on what it is. Video games for example work well with this, because who cares if you play something 10 years after it comes out? It'll be a fraction of the price, and you'll know for certain if you want it or not.
ghusto··on Toxic experts (2017)
I like this term because it describes this type of person so well that it's immediately obvious why you'd want to stay away from them.

Toxic experts are not interested in getting things done, or actually making any real world difference. In fact they'd _rather_ nothing happens at all. They were the kids who were bullied in the playground, and this is their little bit of power.

I think it's an even smarter move on Valve's part than they get credit for. I've heard "I wish I could stop using Windows, but gaming" so often. Thanks to Proton, people are (slowly) jumping ship now. It'll take a long time, but the more that do, the stronger the case for native Linux games.
ghusto··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I've seen someone close to me do it, and I still don't understand. I've asked her to explain why she fumbled around trying to perform a simple cursor move instead of moving the mouse, and I got a vague "it's easier" (it wasn't easier).

I feel so constricted and frustrated when I have to use my phone. I often even put things off until I can get back to my computer.

On a touchscreen, I can tap. That's it. Select? Tap. Move? Tap. Highlight? Tap. The only one that makes sense is draging for moving, but even that's a pain in the butt because it often misinterprets the tap+hold duration that's necessary before it works. When I'm editing text (navigating, cut-n-paste, etc.), it gets what I want wrong more often than it gets it right, I mean like 80/20.

With the phone, they had a green field to design an entirely new UX for touch interfaces, so there's no legacy to blame.

ghusto··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
For interacting with a UX that's designed around keyboard and mouse? I get how it's intuitive to reach out and touch something you can see, but in terms of much of the UX it doesn't make any sense.

Aside from the fact that you can not do two things at the same time, all the other phones, foldable or not can do this for not a gagillion dollars.
ghusto··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
Sure, and there are followers of Christ who also do all the things he said not to (Catholics). I don't take a religion's followers as good examples of the founders intents.
ghusto··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
The term AI always bothered me in reference to generative AI, because I always felt generative AI isn't artificial intelligence. Next Word Prediction Model sits better with me.

> Apple has stepped in this same cowpie. They depreciated hundreds of "old" macOS games by radically changing their runtime, and then nobody invested into the new Metal-native paradigm

This is the reason. Apple couldn't care less about backwards compatibility. In fact, I'd cynically say backwards incompatibility is counted as feature at Apple, because you can sell more X. The first time people were bit with a game they purchased on the App Store no longer working a year later, was also the last time many of them bought a game from the App Store.

> Porting modern games to native Linux didn't increase user or developer interest in supporting the platform. It made Valve liable for a lot of investment into systems that no developers ever used

This I can't agree with though. They succeeded on their second iteration with the Steam Deck and Proton, which had the side effect of making it easy for normal Linux users to run games, which increased developer interest. Also, developers love developing on Linux, as far as I know.

ghusto··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
For one thing, Thiel doesn't need bias against him to look like an evil piece of shit. But for another, hit piece or not, facts are facts. If the author writes about this kind of stuff every week, it doesn't make him wrong.

> he is very intelligent ...

> ... but his favorite work was The Lord of the Rings, which he admitted he had reread a dozen times

Can't be that smart then. Read the book a dozen times and didn't understand the core message once.

Wow, thanks. I think (kind of depressing).

Now I understand more of the TV shows and films I've seen.

If I wanted to be pedantic (and I do), I could say that came from the proto-sun ;)

Is Buddhism a religion? There's no supernatural higher power there?

Buddhism is actually a great example, because it shows how one can choose their religion just as they can their cultural preferences.

ghusto··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
My argument is that a religion _is in itself_ a cultural group. Religion is culture, it's just that we have given it special status because people take it (much) more seriously than any other culture.

Looked it up and it's actually _20_ days they have to comply, not 30. Not to acknowledge, but actually finish the request

https://www.ukjournohub.com/foi/foi-deadlines

I've also experienced this many times personally. Acknowledgement is immediate, and the request is done just under the 20 day mark.

They are as you describe, but ironically have strict processes to follow for FOI requests too, which makes it go faster.

Those exceptions prove the rule. They're about what happens when they don't do what they're supposed to.
ghusto··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
That is 100% false. There are scenarios where they can reject a FOI request, but they are specific:

I had a vague suspicion this could be, and it's good to hear. I feel like Americans are incredibly cynical and pessimistic about themselves and the USA
ghusto··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
Vegemite? Is that like shit Marmite?
ghusto··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
Thought about the other way around:

Religion is culture. If you doubt that, go to country X and ask them about god(s) then go to every other country and ask the same. Even if one of them got it right and is following the word of god, it would still mean every other country has got it wrong, and _theirs_ is just culture.

Now, if we bend for one cultural norm, why not another? I'd say it's not that his culture shouldn't be treated like religion, it should! It's just that religion shouldn't be treated specially in the first place.

ghusto··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Not necessarily. There are little-known monopolies like the eyewear, travel agencies, and cargo fuel (there are many more!) where price fixing like this happens.
ghusto··on 'It's offensively cheap': Solar power is quietly becoming bigger than nuclear
Well, it is where all energy on Earth originated/originates from :)

I think it's more than that, the UK for instance, but I agree it's shocking how few. What I meant though, was that they were militarily independent before, and could be again.

I'm looking at this from across the pond, and I'm not convinced that's true. From here it looks like you have a choice between voting for the liar who says things you don't like, or the liar who says things you like. Neither will do what they say.

UK and EU politicians are also liars, but some are only so out of necessity. I see corruption here too, but I also see people trying to go the middle road and do what they believe is right. I do not see that in the USA.

Freedom of Information Act in the UK means I make a request, and I get the information I asked for within 30 days. No excuses, no nonsense "fees".

Just what in the hell is happening in the USA?
