HN tips:

# AI Vague Posting

Don't take the vague comment bait! Vague comments about how <Claude/Specific model> magically solved someone's problem, with no details - just downvote and move on.

# Anything GrapheneOS

Don't bother engaging in anything but sycophancy. They're watching and manipulating. Not worth the mass karma hit/unjustified flags. Look at the 'grapheneos' and 'strcat' HN account history - a ton of reply-spam, constant accusations of being a victim, very little genuine conversation to be had.

Obvious GOS fans/staff who show up to every GOS post include: other8026, HybridStatAnim8, microtonal. Most don't disclose their connection in their comments, which is the done thing here. Very disrespectful.

On their Discord people are invited to opt-in to "to mentions for help addressing inaccurate media coverage of GrapheneOS". [0]

And on their Mastadon they have previously specifically asked followers to manipulate HN.

Bonus hilarious dramatainment: https://bsky.app/profile/grapheneos.org/post/3mzm2j56ws22q . The dev goes on a rampage every time his name is mentioned - yet he can't help but keep engaging (or directing people to) engage on this site! Just stay way if you don't like it here. ("They're clearly mainly there for Y Combinator's business interests." - yes, and you and your mods on your own socials are for your own business interests too.)

# Posts critical of big tech (FAANG etc)

They'll likely have a long top-level comment along the lines of "let me explain why this isn't quite right/not as bad as it seems". Just skip over that

Yup. Just had a support agent hit mute, disconnect the screen share and pretend the line cut out to get out of a tricky support request too ("why do I need to keep rebuilding the Spotlight index every couple of days?"). No attempt at calling back. Atrocious
gib444··on GitHub Down Again?
My algorithm has not needed an update for a while:

  def is_github_down(day):
      return day[-1] == "y"

It does have a flaw though where if you are shouting, it returns some false hope.

Fix available at https://www.debian.org/ ;) jk, I've got a Mac.

I'm glad I don't have any contacts/photos in iCloud or locally, don't use FaceTime/iMessage etc. Contacts are in DAV. Mail is webmail. Photos self hosted with Immich. I do have my Calendar on my Mac, that's it.

Mac is totally Windows-ified now. Have you seen the new user setup steps for MacOS 27? SO MANY CLICKS! And a plethora of debloating tools now, to disable Apple Intelligence etc. Sigh

(oh and MacOS 27.2 has SO many bugs I've lost count within just 24 hours of upgrading. Can't even trust x.2 releases now)

gib444··on Ozempic-style drugs now in trials for heart failure, addiction and even aging
GP here, yup, was about to write something like that.

I don't really like fermented foods and I avoid dairy. Only have heavy carbs a few times a month. Mostly it's meat, vegetables, fruit. I've done various diets as a result of trying to fix other issues but none move the needle on the food noise

I've also had no stress for like, a year now due to my circumstances

I've had this configured for a while now due to my number being leaked all over the place and getting 4-8 spam calls a day :/

It totally solved my food addiction. It flipped it like a switch - I knew what most people are like, where food isn't a thought every 15 minutes. What a glorious time. So much free head space

It is now firmly back, after ~6 months off the drug (due to cost) :/

I've managed to keep off the lost weight, through a lot of willpower, but winter will be a struggle I can tell.

No, it's wrong. The article applies to the entire noun phrase. "A" is correct

gib444··on 'It's just vape, nail, charity shops': Can anything save UK high street?
UK gov, councils and police are all well aware. It's been exposed multiple times by reputable media outlets

Police don't care enough (or are told to do just enough to keep some of the public happy) and the government likes the income taxes from the "employees" and the council likes the business rates...

It's corrupt as hell

> Mercer says a part of town filled with ethnic minority shops and restaurants has been disparaged by some as “a foreign bazaar”. “Would they prefer the shops were empty? It’s much better to have busy shops, but people don’t like change.”

No, it's that I don't like the council and central government turning a blind eye to obvious crime fronts because they're desperate for the tax. Don't call me a bigot or xenophobe.

I would prefer them to be knocked down for housing frankly, as many town centres are close to useful train stations. The council can then use the council tax

Councils are supporting the don't build any housing any where mandate. It is such an obvious use of the land it's crazy. We still have to delusionally play along with ideas about how to "regenerate the high street".

Case in point. Huddersfield is currently "regenerating" its town borrowing huge sums for a new library and new markets etc instead of just flattening the town and replacing it with housing. The railway line is also having a major upgrade. The timing is literally perfect. Another own goal. But hey a lot of employment was generated and I'm sure the mandate to employ local didn't mean a lot of backhanders....

People will move to a shithole if it has good transport links to jobs, which Huddersfield has. Look at Romford for example. The council has sold off loads of land for flats and is selling more. All because of the new Elizabeth Line

Guess what the result is when 10,000s people with good jobs move in to an area? Demand for shops and services!

gib444··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
Yup. Feels very much it's creating a mess on purpose IMHO.

It's like an over-eager junior engineer that will implement whatever pattern they read about last week. It just doesn't feel trained on high-quality enterprise, battle-hardened codebases.

Even Opus 5.5 on High thinking still littered a root directory of a JS project with source files without thinking to put it in a 'src' directory. It had to be told to use a testing framework. Had to be told to also test with Firefox (the project already had established Chrome /and/ Firefox targets).

I have to continuously burn tokens and effort correcting it.

I imagine it performs a bit better with a huge corpus of architecture and style guides. But I did expect to get some that for free with the "leading" model.

gib444··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
According to AppleInsider [0], "Some features will also come to Safari 27.3 for macOS Tahoe, though Adaptive Dark Mode ... will require an Apple Intelligence device."

Quite a few apps now requiring MacOS 26 or higher because of the AI hype train. It's frustrating.

MacOS 15 only came out 2 years ago and isn't end of life!

For real. Also disconnects if you wave a palm hair in its general direction. So much worse than screw-in DVI, mechanical design wise.

gib444··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
> You can charge your EV at night

Really shows how out of touch HN can be at times

The electricity market up until a decade or so ago worked well for almost every consumer. Fair, equitable prices for everyone, with the energy companies and government owning the concern about how to power a nation.

Now the reality people are trying to make happen is "just invest $10-30k and turn your house into a substation", and they don't see how absurd it is compared to the very recent past. A single mother working 50 hours a week and 2 jobs doesn't have $20k for solar upgrades and can't cook at 12am and doesn't have time to take out the clothes in the morning and doesn't have 3 hours for a heat-pump dryer to eventually dry the clothes

Look, I'm from the UK, I don't need to be told how precarious our (geopolitical) situation is with natural gas. But I don't want people getting screwed in the transition.
