gilrain··on I will no longer upload to NEW
Every time its use insults (in aggregate) invaluable human contributors. It doesn't even matter if they're philosophically "correct" or not: it's about respect.
gilrain··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
Then what you've said isn't true: it parrots an existing talking point, adding nothing.
gilrain··on AI Is Not a Tool
I don't do this anymore. The information is easy to find, and bothering to find it is part of learning. I don't mind if you stay dumb; just don't spread it around.

Edit: because what is compelling isn't an article here and a study there. It's a slowly-growing consensus among researchers. It would take over an hour for me to compile enough evidence to convince someone "this is real". If you care, you have to do it yourself. My time is too valuable to do that for someone who is probably unserious. Hell, a two-sentence prompt to a good AI would get you started.

gilrain··on AI Is Not a Tool
You should catch up with modern cognition research rather than this 20th-Century, anthropocentric nonsense.
gilrain··on A complete bypass of eMudhra’s 1FA OTP login system
This site serves me garbage. Iocaine, I think? I use Brave.

"If you are not [a bot], and you feel you have been served garbage by mistake, please contact the owner of the site you're visiting."

If anyone knows another way to access the content, I'd be interested. No contact details are offered and visiting mastodon.catgirl.cloud resets my connection.

gilrain··on Amazon identifies Oct 17 PHP2Shell exploitation prior to public disclosure
MediaWiki is the last thing that prevents me never dealing (directly) with it again. And it's hard to imagine a drop-in, migrateable replacement for larger wikis. T_T
gilrain··on CVE-2026-111943: Compromised Intermediate Certificate Authority
I'm sticking with the RHEL ecosystem for now, but it's now more out of inertia than a feeling that I gain much by it being the corporate standard. It's gone from "by choice" to "by habit".
gilrain··on CVE-2026-111943: Compromised Intermediate Certificate Authority
RHEL also got the PHP patches hours after Debian.

I chose AlmaLinux last time I needed to, and it's been a great way to access the ecosystem — I heartily recommend it as a free RHEL! — but these past few days have me looking in envy at Debian. Corporate stability hasn't been what I expected.

gilrain··on CVE-2026-111943: Compromised Intermediate Certificate Authority
What are you talking about?
gilrain··on Several Linux kernel vulnerabilities accidentally posted to public mailing list
They wanted "full stack", so they found hires with 1/10th of an education in each of 10 different fields.

The boss class are rich because they're smart. /s

gilrain··on Sixteen years after Deepwater Horizon, deep sea life shows few signs of recovery
Yet, our ecosystem likely never will. I wonder which is more important to not let fail.
gilrain··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
"Ain't gonna buy no more no more, ain't gonna buy no more. How in the heck can I spike my debt if I ain't gonna buy no more?"

Capital won't like what comes next.

gilrain··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
> I have some respect ... I cannot explain.

Naturally, they do it to earn "some respect" from those who otherwise see them clearly.

gilrain··on Beginning of the Ende
I was also baffled by this mistake.

It demonstrates carelessness precisely where that is the reddest of flags: in an announcement that the careless party wishes to adopt a big, new responsibility.

Highly useful, actually!

What sort of lion lives in the sea?
gilrain··on Linus Torvalds on "don't use AI for X"
He's always been entirely pragmatic. This is unsurprising of him.
gilrain··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
I partially agree: Israel is a little bully who should be extremely worried about the track record of their big bully brother.
gilrain··on Catch a Bird – I made it for my own sanity
I won't believe this of you when it's your turn to suffer. I'll stand up even when other people tell me to shut up about you.
gilrain··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
The US, to its eternal shame, guarantees their security.

Israel is not particularly skillful: they're a little bully getting in some punches while a big bully holds back the rescuers. Ooh, tough guy!

gilrain··on Catch a Bird – I made it for my own sanity
Palestinian culture being systematically removed from the world through mass murder is indeed a bummer, but ignoring it is a much worse bummer in the end.
gilrain··on Sticky alpine flower confirms Darwin's 150-year-old carnivorous plant prediction
> I thought a "prediction" was something about the future.

This is not correct. A prediction is about something unknown — maybe because it is in the future, or maybe because of some other reason.

The headline is well written and clear.

gilrain··on Bot traffic from Yandex
> wouldn't it be easy to point me to even one example

Read and think about my wine analogy, if you care.

gilrain··on Sudden drop in Cloudflare bot traffic after strike on Yandex datacenter
Point out any wine that doesn't taste the same as any other, to me who has said he cannot taste wine.

Only then, I'll believe you that wine can taste good or bad.

Is my mind open? Is this not a waste of your time?

gilrain··on Bot traffic from Yandex
The downvotes are because you're resisting easily-observed reality with the seemingly-rational response "Where is this 'air'? If I'm breathing it, it should be easy to point to, no?"

No. If you can't see it, and don't understand it's there, you cannot be explained to. You're someone with no palate asking how anyone else can know if a wine tastes good.

gilrain··on I think I found a planet nobody knew existed. I used Claude Code to find it
Humility is a valuable tool, but it must advertise itself: nobody will believe it of a haughty tone, nor should they.
gilrain··on I think I found a planet nobody knew existed. I used Claude Code to find it
Maybe skilled work within other fields is more difficult than we imagine based on our ignorance?
gilrain··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
Actually and very obviously, what's happening now is new and worse.
gilrain··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Actually, most women don't like being assaulted, regardless of the attractiveness of the assaulter. Additionally, this is true of humans generally, not just women.

It's really gross that you think of women as so alien and inhuman.

gilrain··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
This comment is extremely ignorant across several of its statements. Ignore.
gilrain··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
> If you think about it, it is weird that they even make articles out of statements that only "may" be true.

I thought about it. And it's very stupid to imagine uncertainty should be off limits. I hope that isn't what you meant.
