ginvok··on OpenAI Researchers Find That AI Is Unable to Solve Most Coding Problems
AI don't "solve" problems, best it can do is remember them. Ask them to solve anything new that's challenging and it starts to hallucinate. At least currently.

Moreover, the manual also lies about the tools limitations.

ginvok··on Famous AI Artist Says He's Losing Millions from People Stealing His Work
Pretty images are worthless, there's no point staring at images that have were made without intention or effort. Making a prompt is hardly any effort and more of a lucky hit.
ginvok··on Investors are suddenly getting concerned that AI isn't making any serious money
Well they did oversell LLMs just to make a quick buck... Crypto, "AI", I wonder what's the next bubble. I bet it's property in space or something.
ginvok··on Ask HN: Do you already see the impact of LLMs on the job prospects for dev's?
On my own experience, LLMs are great to speed up boilerplate and test cases (note 1). And the closer you are to the business the more it become less useful (e.g. I used to work in an insurance company and it insisted to sum interests or taxes on some payments by hallucinating variables) Note 1: On tests written by juniors it helped us to have much more tests, but did not improve their quality, llms have no way to measure coverage so it would just generate "cleaver" edge cases (NaN, and infinities even though theses cases were already caught by another place in the code), because the juniors would just accept any code recommendations from llms. Seniors on the other hand would only accept tests they wrote good descriptions for... Were the seniors fast? Yeah, they even enjoyed writing tests now. But reviews were a lot more about catching useless cases. And yeah, I'm aware tests are not only about coverage, but it is one of the concerns we had.

ginvok··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
Uh, no? This is definitely an outside perspective.
ginvok··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
Things are bad, but... things were always bad:

- Things in the past seemed better just because you didn't care enough and now you are becoming aware of it. - There were always wars, famine, diseases, poverty. You (or humanity) in general didn't care enough or couldn't care (information took longer to reach people). - Software were always bloated, but now we have machines that run faster, they had bugs but they were simple programs before. There were injustices in the area, they were not as common because there were a lot of less software engineer and methods for them to share their discontentment. - Things were always poisoned, because of the substance of the moment: Mercury, Lead, Asbestos, Plastics. - We already opened hole in the ozone layer, it's recovering, now we are heating up the planet.

ginvok··on Ask HN: How do you justify your existence?
I live. I was given life without asking for it, so I might as well use it any way I want it. I don't need to justify it to anyone.
ginvok··on Ask HN: What's the Point of Life?
Just because life is pointless, it doesn't mean you can't do things for a purpose.

Think questions like: "Why bother developing a skill if I'm not going to use it professionally?"

Well, learning this can just make you happy, and that's enough of a purpose if you want it to be. You don't have to make money out of it, it doesn't need to take you anywhere in your career, if you feel good doing something as hobby, why would that be bad?

"Ah, but there are people consider that procrastination"

Do you care what others think? How much to be in the way of you enjoying yourself?

Of course you need to make the decision if something is worth your time and is making you truly happy or just helping you escape reality.

Addictive things can give you short burst of happiness, but fill the rest of your life with misery. But anything can be an addiction. Just because it is to another person, it doesn't mean it is to you and vice-versa.

ginvok··on Ask HN: What's the Point of Life?
Whatever the point you want it to have, really. You don't need external validation, it's exactly what you, and you alone, want it to have. It can be fluid, static or maybe you can feel you already achieved it. Maybe it's to do whatever to make yourself happy, or the people around you happy. Money, popularity, love. Maybe it's following others' ideals. Or watch it passively. Whatever you choose. How grand or pathetic it is, it's also up to you.

This also means no one else can tell what is the meaning of YOUR life, you have to pick it yourself, or not, also your choice.
