gjs278··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
I wrote a scraper that looked through substitute teacher jobs for a friend. she subbed 30 days in a row and got a full time job due to it.
gjs278··on LVM Cache Surprises
the surprises are because you trusted magic LVM to take care of it. learn dm-cache and configure it how you want.
gjs278··on I can no longer compile my first Flash game
I still distribute a visual basic 6 program that gets thousands of downloads a month

gjs278··on Miss a payment? Good luck moving that car (2014)
hi! you don’t work for a ghetto auto lender. they require very little money down and they charge insane interest rates. and don’t care about your credit. that’s why the cars are such a flight risk.
gjs278··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
that’s barely freedom of choice. a robber pulling a gun on you and saying your money or your life isn’t what any reasonable person interprets as free will. free will would be not going to jail or being banned from society if you chose not to take the vaccine.
gjs278··on Dhcpcd Will Need a New Maintainer
god shut up. it’s $64,000. he’ll take the time to claim it. can you please not post?
gjs278··on Apple TV Was Making a Show About Gawker. Then Tim Cook Found Out
your comment is trivial. there are no holocaust survivors reading this page of hacker news. it’s not going to “happen again” or be “forgotten” because someone swaps the words of a phrase everybody knows. spend your energy on something else other than ruining the internet, making us self censor every little thing typed online. lest someone who had nothing to do with the event or problem take offense on behalf of others.
gjs278··on Facebook was used as a proxy by web scraping bots
I hosted a server that was attacked all the time over a comcast connection and was always able to figure it out without cloudflare proxy blocking for me
gjs278··on Google's penalty against The Online Slang Dictionary
I have a penalty on https://garyshood.com/rsclient/ which used to be the number one term for "autoclicker" several years running.

I think it was due to comment spam since I didn't moderate the comments and since then the invisible penalty has never gone away. I've given up on trying. people just have to search "garys autoclicker" if they want to find it now, or have it bookmarked. "autoclicker" is pushed all the way back to page 4 for my site now. on bing I am page 2 behind basically autoclicker dot org and every other variation of the TLD

gjs278··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
the mods here are trash
gjs278··on Facebook halts Oculus Quest sales in Germany amid privacy concerns
imagine actually worrying about this
gjs278··on Parents are 5X as Worried about Infection and School than Work and Paying Bills
> Then we'd actually put real effort into controlling it so we could go back to life as normal even with the virus not fully eradicated.

ok now imagine the virus lives on surfaces for 5+ years and never dies. now what? you can’t eradicate this virus by quarantining, someone, and it only takes one, is going to spread it somehow.

now answer with that in mind. “we would just fix it” is a cop out, we can’t fix it.

gjs278··on Parents are 5X as Worried about Infection and School than Work and Paying Bills
I would have preferred we did nothing and let the old people die too. they suck up all the money and housing.
gjs278··on Windows 10: HOSTS file blocking telemetry is now flagged as a risk
that would happen with any pcie card, even non graphics ones
gjs278··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
you have no sense of math. if you forcefully took back every mansion and giant boat from the rich and sold them at auction for double their value, you wouldn’t even fund the medicare/medicaid budget for more than two years.
gjs278··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
rich people can buy teslas and green energy. you’re wasting your time thinking this will help poor people. it won’t. it’ll reduce the rich’s consumption but everyone else will still use poor people tech and end up getting carbon taxed. maybe redirect your efforts to something useful.
gjs278··on Portland approves 10% cap on fees that food delivery apps can charge restaurants
considering the food delivery apps don’t make money, I don’t see how this will help anything
gjs278··on New Mac ransomware spreading through piracy
and neither of those are ransomware. do you understand the difference?
gjs278··on Journalist’s phone hacked: all he had to do was visit any website
the certbot tools were made with the "default" experience in mind and no one tries them with more custom setups. the fact that they don't have easy guides on how to do it without certbot is worrying. you should be able to get a straightforward automated experience without having to use their convoluted tool that will choke and leave you hanging.

google certbot systemd or certbot openrc to see it fail. tack on that they had to invalidate all of their certs one day and gave little warning and you could easily have experienced revoked SSL certs if your system wasn't the default setup.

gjs278··on AWS’s Share of Amazon’s Profit
it’s not even slightly difficult to get a huge AWS bill. people do it on accident because they refuse to put in spend limits.
gjs278··on Zoom transforms hype into huge jump in sales, customers
haha yes this title change is hilarious. best move the mods have ever made here imo. hopefully they can pointlessly detach and shift things around now and make it look like we praised zoom.
gjs278··on MS Flight Simulator 2020 vs. Real life
there are people in battle.bet ladder. you can’t use mods there. you could play open but it’s all hackers. if you want to beat hell mode you have to go as a firewall / frozen orb mage or a necromancer that uses skeletons and corpse explode. you’ll need an act 2 merc as well. good luck lol. if you can get one friend to tank you can do it much easier.
gjs278··on How to Serve over 100K Web Pages a Day on a Slower Home Internet Connection
I ran garyshood.com off of a pentium 3 dell poweredge and a comcast connection in its peak (2009-2012). I couldn't offer an upload speed of more than 20-40kb/s without slowing down the house. but with traffic shaping rules and following most of what he's outlined here, it was easy. it wasn't even cpubound, it was just network bound, but I could still handle 100-300k unique visits a month. I did have to host the downloadable exe for the autoclicker on a third party for $3 a month, even at 120kb that thing would use too much house bandwidth.
gjs278··on The Original Cookie specification from 1997 was GDPR compliant (2019)
yeah this would actually be the ideal world. shame. I don't even know how to programmatically sign into a google account anymore. it used to be easy enough with a few curl calls and I could retrieve my adsense reports but now it's just impossible. their login process is too convoluted now and involves so much javascript, I doubt it's possible with anything but headless chrome.
gjs278··on I got my first $50/mo customer
your hard work should be finished products not npm module spam of the next left-pad
gjs278··on As of April 7, 2020, CA DMV has issued two Driverless Vehicle Testing Permits
because 10 days is the same amount of time you have to report a personal crash as well
gjs278··on Tesla is not essential business as defined in the Alameda County Health Order
lol if a massive number of people die due to HN misinformation it was probably good that they went
gjs278··on Bert Sutherland Has Died
yep. but they won’t. HN rules thee not for me. they do titles like this all the time.
gjs278··on Bloomberg bankrolls a social-media army
I wouldn’t. there’s no reason anyone should have to disclose if something is an ad.
gjs278··on Disinformation for hire: how a new breed of PR firms is selling lies online
not a single person died due to facebook. it’s funny you believe this.
