glax··on 25L Portable NV-linked Dual 3090 LLM Rig
Sorry for going off topic. But your insight will be helpful on my build

I'm thinking about a low budget system, which will be using

1.X99 D8 MAX LGA2011-3 Motherboard - It has 4 pcie 3.0 x16 slots, dual cpu socket. They are priced around $260 with both the cpu

2. 4X AMD MI50 32G cards - They are old now, but they have 32 gigs of vram and also can be sources at $110 each

The whole setup would not cost more than $1000, is it a right build ? or something more performant can be built within this budget ?

glax··on GNU Midnight Commander
I used Far manager(https://www.farmanager.com/screenshots.php) a lot back in the days, clone of norton commander. Got hooked to it, after joining the se-nse.net forum (https://www.facebook.com/sensedotnet). Sadly it's been disbanded now
glax··on I launched 17 side projects. Result? I'm rich in expired domains
There were 6 domains that were bought by me in the last 12 years.

side project, business partnership, personal music streaming site, serverless blog.

It's hard to do if you have a regular 9 to 5 and also some other hobby(I'm into motorcycles :D).

Only remaining domain is of my name pusparaj.com (but it's in auction mode)

I have also lost ownership 2 times or more i think, because i tend to rotate registrars and forgot to renew it.

now 3 domains are remaining, will let them expire.

glax··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
I help people mod their motorcycles. I wanted to do something not related to tech or coding in general.

People consult me for doing performace mods, parts sourcing. The sports bike scene is emerging in my country.

I'm planning to build a dyno from scratch, if it's a success. I'm hoping to recoup the cost from proving it as a service.

glax··on Ask HN: Can a 5 year old i7 laptop compete with one made today?
It depends on what you are doing and what compromises you are willing to take. I'm still using my dell M6800 and t430 for work, they are decade old laptops.Ubuntu for Os and it's been working great. It's an i7 system and i work on php projects and sometimes dabble in python and some ml projects. Never ever disaapaointed me. It's been showing it's age when some ml projects throw that the current cuda library is not supported by the nvdia graphics that i currently have.

I buy and sell used laptops and computers parts as my side hustle. There afew points that you should keep in mind, while buying used laptop. 1.Don't buy U variants or any other low power variants of the i7 processor. 2.Don't buy dual core i7 variants. 3.Try to buy 8th gen or above. Better battery life and performance ratio. 4.If you are not everyday carrying or portablity is a must , stay away from slim and designer ones, that do not have adequate cooling. 5.Check if the display is TN or an IPS panel. TN is a straight no no. 6.Do not buy the models that are targeted towards students and home users, buy something that for professional users. They are more durable and tend to last long. Example lenovo T-series, W-series, HP also has some, Dell M-series, Precision-series. 7.Check the number of output ports. 8.Physical condition of the laptop, if it is kept clean or not. The fans might be clogged, hinghes are loose, some keys might not be working. Some usb ports might not be working or loose, etc etc 9.Reapply thermal paste , even if it's running fine. Factory ones dry out quickly, so you will get the chance to clean up the fans as well

glax··on New world record with an electric racing car: From 0 to 100 in 0.956 seconds
Had the same thought, 0-100kmph in 3sec gives so much wheel spin. Must be a whole lot of electronic trickery ever invented from launch control, traction control to power management plus the mechanical stuff sticky tyres, down force.

It amazes me how much faster we have got the last 6-7 years.

glax··on Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL?
For me postgresql's schema, EXPLAIN, Column modification and UUID. But most of the time I stick to sqlite, it satisfies most of the project with low footprint and require for installation restricted servers.
glax··on The Terrifying Potential of 5G
Where are you getting that information from ? My outdoor Wifi CPE has maximum Tx Power of 23dBm which is about 200mW, which gives me signal strenght of -65dBm and my internet tower is approx 6Km far.

I think you have typo on the decimal points on the watts.

glax··on Low-earth orbit satellites threatened by debris from Indian anti-satellite test
Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan earlier played down the threat the debris might pose to satellites in space and said it was his understanding the debris would eventually burn up in the atmosphere. Asked on Thursday whether the Pentagon stood by Shanahan's earlier assessment, spokesman Charlie Summers said: "Yes."

So it whose wordings are correct ?

Pentagon or NASA ?

The ASAT test was specifically conducted at the orbit of 380Km less than the maximum range of 100Kms because the residues will gradually decompose within weeks and there will be almost none interference to existing or upcoming orbital paths.

The Micro satellite was specifically chosen for this purpose. There is no reason for Nationalism in this.

glax··on India’s destruction of satellite threatens ISS, says Nasa
You have to look through the geopolitical aspect. Treaties, historically have been favorable for those who ride the high horse, bystanders gut mud slung upon them. In the 60's India was pressurized not to develop Nuclear bombs, but it was secretly known pakistan was developing it with the help of china and stolen tech. If India had signed the NPT back then, it would not have have anykind of deterrence action against Pakistan where they had full scale war and USA coming to pakistans's Aid when India was trying to liberate East Pakistan where there was full scale genocide of ethnic Bangla people going, that we now know as Bangladesh. They developed the bombs but with a no first use policy.

Now in 2019 with 2 front war with both Pakistan and china, where both party have actively militarized the border with them and playing the proxy war it was sure coming. China vetoing 2 times action against J-E-M terrorist group based in Pakistan that are active in insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir state of India. They are also actively claiming the state of Arunachal Pradesh as the territory like they did with Tibet

China has also amassed large number of military installation near the North-Eastern border of India and have actively tried en roaching into Indian territories, several kilometers sometimes into the past few year resulting in border skirmishes sometimes.

Last time India declined the UNSC seat and gave it to china & they are still regretting the the decision. They are hoping the next NPT for Space will have India's seat already reserved.

If other nations are going to play game of dual diplomacy it's leaves no option but to demonstrate show of force. India cannot afford to become Another Ukraine, Tibet or Taiwan becomes some other nation can abuse it's power.

Just No. It doesnt't even feel human. It's like throwing bunch of things at the developers and will give out output. It's upper management version of random button smashing.

glax··on Ask HN: How to choose the right university subjects for a career in IT
I was also in this same spot as you few years back. Back then computers were a novelty in my country. My first encounter with a computer was at my father's office, the banking industry was then shifting from paper transactions to computers. He showed me MS-DOS and the incredible mkdir command. The computer came installed with chess, what a amazing day it was. I was chess with a computer. There and there i knew what i want to do with my life.

You should ask yourself, why did you choose IT in the first place. Then you will find your niche.

Computer language is just the path, what you will want to become will be based on choices on the core CS Subjects you will choose.

glax··on Tim Cook’s refusal to help FBI hack iPhone is validated by ‘WannaCry’ attack
Yes i also the same point, why would any one want to miss the free upgrade. The whole update hijack and privacy concerns kept some people away. Organization running bulk of window's xp and 7, for sheer cost cutting purposes. But still the whole thing affected all, if some people weren't hesitant to migrate to the newer update , they would have been saved.
glax··on Tim Cook’s refusal to help FBI hack iPhone is validated by ‘WannaCry’ attack
What about windows 7 and 8.1 ? They were also hacked. The uncertain nature of windows 10 update and the bad press about the telemetry issues was also the reason for the IT Departments to stay clear of it. Why would someone ignore a free windows upgrade ?
