gniv··on Gemini 4 Carbon is the new #1 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5
A lot of people do though by looking at the current stock price.
gniv··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
When the updates are boring people complain that they don't change anything. When they take risks (touchscreen on laptop, foldable phone) people complain about the new stuff.

I like that they do this. If it doesn't catch on, they will change back, like with the touch bar.

gniv··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Thanks. So the GPU is worse! And the memory bandwidth is smaller.
gniv··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Ah good point. Is there somewhere a comparison between M6 and M1 Pro?
gniv··on Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6
Mine has a broken fan so I have to run it in slow mode and it's still working fine.
gniv··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
And it's still $1999. That's impressive. I paid the same for the M1 Pro in 2021.
gniv··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
> Mines and oil and gas wells are huge wealth concentrators.

Only if the oil price remains high. If the world, um, situation stabilizes we will go back to having a glut of oil and hence low prices. Lower than ever I would guess because of the current massive transition to EVs.

gniv··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Asphalt shingles. As usual the US is building cheap and light and these things don't last.
gniv··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Same in France. You also sign that whatever excess you're producing goes to the grid for free.
gniv··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
We're getting further from the subject, but who cares.

I keep explaining to boomer members of my family that things were not good during the communists. It just seems bad now because of the news and social media. They are better off than 90% of the people in their country, but they don't perceive it.

Anyway, I think people who have been "civilized" for a long time would also take a long time to turn uncivilized. Which might mean never, since they would also do their best (as a tribe) to get out of poverty quickly.

gniv··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
> If the rich countries were to become suddenly poor, the crime and violence situation would also get worse.

I don't think it's that clearcut. There's a cultural DNA. Folks behave a certain way then when they grow up their children behave the same because that's how they saw at home. Principles and basic morals are not enforced at home etc.

I'm basically arguing that nature is less important than nurture, even if nature might indeed be worse than we think.

gniv··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
Google has an army of salespeople.
gniv··on Network incident disrupts mobile services across France
Incident is an understatement. I haven't had mobile data for at least 5 hours. And Orange is supposed to be the better provider.
gniv··on Voxtral 3
The healthcare is quite good and cheap but you have to be in the system. This means you have to have a family doctor and to have already seen the main specialists that you need. Then you can get an appt within days (usually by calling the secretary directly rather than on doctolib).

But yeah dermatology is in particularly high demand for some reason.

gniv··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
> AI as a business will be 10x larger than it is today within the next 20 years.

I would argue it will be 10x in 2-3 years the way things are going.

Turning right seems hard.
gniv··on Things to know when you get cancer
Yes you get a 3rd, 4th, 5th opinion! Until you understand what the consensus seems to be. This is serious stuff.
gniv··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
Do you get any discounts on parking?
gniv··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
The Ami is very popular around here. Lots of high-schoolers driving them since they can do it without a (proper) permit.
gniv··on Food processing influences metabolism and brain activity
This is the main thing of Jessie Inchauspé. One of her many videos on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEEUrIQ_3O4
gniv··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
It sounds like that's besides the point. High res scans already exist. They just wanted to make a point it seems.
gniv··on Newgrounds.com – A community of games, music, and art
Doesn't load at all for me.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Is he running for office in November?
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Had to read it twice lol. The syllable that is stressed makes a huge difference in some words.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Judging by other comments here this model has been available internally for a few weeks. So the public release is likely imminent. The timing of the announcement might have to do with end of quarter for some obscure reason.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Jevon's paradox is the most likely answer. Tons of stuff to do.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
They are playing a longer-term and more enterprise-oriented game.
gniv··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
I don't live in Romania so I don't know the details but that probably makes me more objective. I think the situation is better for the future than it was in the 90s. In hindsight, back then it took many years for things to get better. Whereas now with so much upheaval in the world Romania is well-positioned to keep growing.
gniv··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
> I lived through the 1990s here in Romania, the future does not look bright in the slightest.

Why? Inflation was much higher then. There were almost no highways. Very little foreign tourism. Towns were ugly. Industry was barely functioning. Etc. Things are way better now. Just because Romania has high debt is no reason to be pessimistic. Everybody has high debt.
