gotstad··on Intel D270 GPU AI Accelerator–Up to 480 GB LPDDR5X
Frigate is an excellent open alternative.
gotstad··on Microsoft builds MacBook Pro rival with NVIDIA-powered Surface Laptop Ultra
If Microsoft was really ambitious about building a product truly competing to the Macbook Pro, they would need to ship it with a radically different version of Windows.

Microsoft cannot just throw upgraded hardware after the Surface, and expect it to compete with the Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro is not primarily popular due to Apple Silicon, but the combination of a focused user experience (although, Liquid Glass was a significant step-down) and high-end hardware.

gotstad··on Visual Basic 6 rebuilt in C# – complete with form designer and IDE in browser
I owe my whole fascination with programming from childhood to Visual Basic 6.

I was 11 and I could hardly read English, yet VB6 with the WYSIWYG-editor and an introductory book by my side was intuitive and rewarding enough for me to learn the basics of programming.

gotstad··on Tesla Q2 2024 Update [pdf]
I think you might be underestimating how many potential customers are unwilling to buy from Tesla after Elon Musk decided to openly support the MAGA wing of republicans.

Not sure why that makes you more inclined to buy a Tesla or flip someone the bird?

gotstad··on The legal rule that computers are presumed to be operating correctly (2022) [pdf]
Well, in many safety-critical industries (e.g. manufacturing of medicinal products) you actually need to maintain objective evidence of its validation.
gotstad··on HP CEO Makes Up a Whole Lot of Bullshit to Defend Crippling Printers
I feel like the “investing in the customer” part always seems the case with HP. The products never work properly unless you are willing to pay them more money or live with the extreme amount of bloatware in their PCs.
gotstad··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
Designing a prototype car for trials vs mass production are two different things entirely. Those lidar sensors will become far less intrusive once a car is designed for mass production.

Most likely, the existing Waymo cars have their LiDAR sensors equipped like that because they need to be maintained and swapped at a regular basis.

I think the value proposition is more than enough for mass adoption, once people realize they can work and commute at the same time.

gotstad··on Is the first cure for advanced rabies near?
No, and must likely the ethical committee review would reject the use of a placebo group in the study.
gotstad··on Arm Announces Public Filing for Proposed Initial Public Offering
It is a reflection of exactly that, but this completely dismissed all the risks: - Maybe new ml-tech is invented that does not require as heavy equipment. - Maybe AI does not grow as fast as expected. - Maybe a competitor comes along and pricing comes under pressure. - Maybe supply chain issues.
gotstad··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
No-code and no-specification is confused all the time.
gotstad··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
That needs some nuances. There are some processes that are just well-known by research to be standardized - like supply-chain, regardless if JIT-style or forecasted stockkeeping.

SAP does not need to touch the "unique" detailed processes that makes a company great, nor it's culture. But if you e.g. manufacture a product, the design process can still be relatively unique to your company, but most often, the manufacturing processes should follow the high-level blueprint of manufacturing companies.

gotstad··on How to Not Get Hit by Cars
That's neither feasible nor required. Copenhagen still has cars in city centre - personally I drive my bike 95% of the time, but sometimes I need to use my car. However, I much prefer my bike because it's faster, less troublesome, infrastructure is great and the exercise helps.

Create incentives for biking, but don't outlaw cars.

gotstad··on A mystery of the ketogenic diet: benevolent pseudo-diabetes in mice (2019)
It is actually not only because Keto is calorie deficient, but also because it encourages ketogenic metabolism, which means that while you are calorie deficient you are more effective at burning fat. Compared with a standard calorie deficient diet, you have more stable energy levels throughout the day, because the body adapts to not getting carbs.
gotstad··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
Yes, that would be a nice future. But how do I get to the office, now?
gotstad··on Fishing uranium from the ocean with a spider-silk line (2019)
But the discussion of whether something is renewable is also a complex topic that is only true to some extent. Renewable energy sources (Wind and Solar) are technically not renewable - the production of the equipment uses raw resources that we (today) cannot renew indefinitely.

However, for both Nuclear and Solar/Wind energy we do know, that the energy sources are sufficiently abundant to sustain us almost indefinitely without us upsetting other ecological balances.

gotstad··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of software requirements and test them?
You could. You might even say it's difficult to make any project estimate without your plan being waterfall. Planning and execution are deliberately two very different things, and convincing the customer - or the steering committee of that - is key to a good product.
gotstad··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of software requirements and test them?
You don't have too, but it is very common to fall into the trap.

If working within a safety-critical industry and wanting to do Agile, typically you'll break down high-level requirements into sw requirements while you are developing, closing/formalizing the requirements just moments before freezing the code and technical file / design documentation.

It's a difficult thing to practice agile in such an industry, because it requires a lot of control over what the team is changing and working on, at all times, but it can be done with great benefits over waterfall as well.

gotstad··on Facebook loses users for the first time
The historical analogy in Microsoft is more correct than one might think. For Microsoft, it was a question of relinquishing control (e.g. going from proprietary to open) that helped them grow so much again. They are in many ways, a wholly different company than 20 years ago.

If Facebook could have embraced the mainstream interest in privacy and converted themselves to become a global digital identity provider, they could have become so much more and be on ethical side of history. Now they are almost pursuing both, while not realizing that they have to let go of one (and incur short-term losses) to pursue other.

gotstad··on No Way to Grow Up
While those are important costs to consider, there is no way people will agree on how to measure such things in comparable terms.
gotstad··on NASA returns Hubble to full science operations
That does not strike me as the right direction of progression. We should become better at in-space assembly, not creating larger payload fairing.
gotstad··on Amazon EC2 M1 Mac Instances
Well it's anecdotal, but yes, our company fits directly into that space. You might ask why we don't want to just have the hardware in-house, but since we're developing Software as Medical Device products for iOS, we'd rather qualify Amazon as a critical supplier than try to operate the activity ourselves (with all the controls that come with doing so).
gotstad··on Show HN: Document and automate your operations playbooks and business processes
It has been claimed for years that some day in the future "everyone will have to learn how to code". While I don't really disagree with that statement, I am much more inclined to believe that it will be tools like these that regular folks will adopt, rather than using conventional IDEs and writing scripts.

My company just started using Power Automate and Power Apps, and after getting over the initial learnings, we have found a plethora of processes that are due for being automated and best of all, we have found that our employees quickly grasp how to apply it to their own domain of expertise. That rings true empowerment.

Your project looks even more refined than Power Automate and Power Apps! Good job.

gotstad··on Study: Recycled Lithium Batteries as Good as Newly Mined
Adding to this, we should view raw materials used in production as something we "borrow" from the earth that must be returned. And the cost of returning them - through disassembly and recycling - should be reflected in the price of the final product.

Right-to-repair friendly products would thus get an immediate advantage owing to their ease of disassembly.

gotstad··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
I will never buy a Dell XPS laptop again. The exterior build quality seems very good, but the internals are such a mess.

I cannot count how many times I have been biking home from work and heard in my headphones "Two devices connected", realizing that my Dell XPS had woken up and would - once again - be red hot when I arrived home and pulled it out of my bag.

gotstad··on Physicists identify the engine powering black hole energy beams
Perhaps reflection from other bodies? Or simply some kind of radiation emitted from the jets?
gotstad··on Hardening macOS (2018)
It has this setting and defaults to using your phone as the proximity device. Not sure why else I should BT pair my phone with my PC.
gotstad··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
I wonder if this would happen to me as an EU subscriber. There is a law (source unknown) that requires cancellation of services to be “as easy” as subscribing to it.
gotstad··on EPA Takes Action to Protect Scientific Integrity
I had this very discussion just a few days ago. Agencies like the EPA cannot satisfy their objectives by advising alone. Administration and case-handling is the bread and butter of executing any strategy, and laws alone won’t cut it.

It is inevitable to have some sort of policy-making involved, even for an agency, because the very strategy they choose to reach a certain goal (set by politicians) or enforce a law (set by politicians) may itself be a choice between political alternatives.

gotstad··on Bitcoin Core Lead Maintainer Steps Back, Encourages Decentralization
I don’t fully understand your argument. Are you saying that a full crypto inplementation would entirely rid the World of the need for military, police, lawyers etc. or what?
gotstad··on Bill Gates is wrong about education
Well trickle-down was always a matter of how much, not if. And yes, it seems pretty much established that it is a lot less than what we usually plan for when using it as argument in an economic plan.
