FWIW, I think a notary signature in the US costs like $4. If verification is the only problem that blockchain solves, it's not a very cost-effective solution.

I hear a lot of talk surrounding their "moat" and many skeptics are questioning whether or not they will be able to maintain their competitive advantage. However, it feels like Airbnb has solved a truly hard problem: how to make people trust your service.

People are using this app to go stay in random people's homes. How often do you hear people talk about being murdered in uber? I still hear it. How often do you hear it for Airbnb? I haven't heard someone express that worry yet.

They've solved the trust and the brand issue, and _that_ is their moat.

Oh this is so cool! The area between the eyes is the brain, a ring through which the stomach (the sack above the eyes) passes.

What's the normal lifespan of this equipment? I'd imagine this environment, particularly with the dust, would cause failure in the 5-10 year range rather than the 1-2 year range.

Here is some more recent data: https://www.beeculture.com/2018-almond-pollination-market-ou...

In 2017, the average price of pollination was $184.43/hive. That is up from $125/hive in 2011.

Yes! The cost of pollination (the service that most commercial beekeepers in the US make the vast majority of their income from) has risen something like 200% over the last 30 years.

https://www.ers.usda.gov/webdocs/publications/37059/49131_sp...

Our monoculture practices have removed all the natural forage for native bees. They have nothing to eat amidst a sea of corn and soybean and thus they die. Additionally, we routinely over-spray with neonicotinoids, which cause the deaths of native and non-native bees alike. So now the only way to pollinate fun foods (apples, cherries, almonds, blueberries, etc) is with the european honeybee (apis mellifera), but we are running out of hives due to pesticide use, overworking, and parasites (we're down to 1.8M hives in the US from 5.4M 30 years ago).

If we could stop spraying with neonicotinoids and start planting natural forage (basically just regular weeds), we could undo this in just 10 years.

This article outlines how three engineers built a p2p file sharing network from scratch, and what they learned along the way.

It's a great high level primer if you're curious about how distributed hash tables or sharding works.
