graupel··on Restroom Archive
It's so randomly weird that a bunch of these are in Utah and I have personally visited them, including one in my neighborhood last week! Some days the Internet is so....local.
graupel··on Show HN: SF Microclimates
As a Meteorologist, I love this! There is one little thing to be aware of with using Purple Air for temperatures, though, as their primary purpose is AQI not temp, all temp data comes with this disclaimer. That said, everything is still at lease directionally accurate.

"Temperature, estimated using a formula temp = 1.0227 * raw_temp_f - 9.3755 developed by Lance Wallace to account for heat generated by the WiFi module and other electronics in a PurpleAir sensor. This will not be accurate for all situations. More information can be found in Lance Wallace's notes."

graupel··on Meteorologists, please stop the fearmongering (2019)
While I, as a Meteorologist and formerly involved in the TV business, I agree with you on using visuals entirely to overstate this, the fact that the field in the dome was set up before the storm to house thousands of electrical lineman and relief workers expected after the storm, says that the roof coming off was NOT an expected outcome from Milton, making it a reasonable way to tell the story on the news.
graupel··on Own a weather station? We want your data
Ballpark, 80k to 150k for those Furuno systems in the USA depending on single or dual polarity, etc. I have taken the sales pitch.
graupel··on US ICBM Launch Center Virtual Tour
I live fairly close to the wonderful museum this is located at on Hill Air Force Base north of SLC.

This new exhibit is really neat but not very big, all things considered, and not worth the trip on its own.

What is worth the trip is the museum as a whole, with an F-117, the only SR-71C in existence, an F22, and all kinds of other planes and rockets - it's not Wright-Patterson, but it's one of the better USAF museums I've been to.

graupel··on Why every microwave sucks these days
I simply toggled off JS and kept reading
graupel··on Announcing the Pollen API
The Air Quality and Pollen data in these APIs are from Google's fairly recent purchase of Breezometer, the same company Apple uses for AQI across iOS weather products.
graupel··on Why was the F-117 retired so quickly?
Well, every U2 that lands needs to take off again, so maybe it was related to takeoff more than landing...
graupel··on Logistics challenges of saving Air India’s diverted 777 in Russia
Same thing happened in 2000 at Bryce Canyon Airport just up the road!

graupel··on What I learned unsubscribing from 22 newspapers
Forget newspapers, lets talk about SiriusXM and trying to cancel that; it makes the worst newspaper look like they are doing it perfectly.
graupel··on Nate Silver Out at ABC News as Disney Layoffs Once Again Hit News Division
It's hard to envision the FiveThirtyEight brand without Nate Silver being involved in it. I know they are going to keep it going as a stats-driven site, but so much of it was built on Nate's original and unique approach to data.
graupel··on Commercial lunar lander presumed lost after moon landing attempt
We were watching live and the control room went from completely excited to somber in about a one second period. Space is hard.
graupel··on Space Elevator
I handed this to a 12-year-old and am now having trouble getting him off the site for day #2 in a row; between Space Elevator and the rest of Neal.fun it's a whole new world for him - love it!

graupel··on USPS facility in Utah does nothing but decipher handwriting
I know a few people who have been hired at this facility but washed out in the training and testing program; the speed and accuracy required to work here is outstanding and evidently quite difficult to achieve.
graupel··on James Niehues Ski Map Artist
Jim is a wonderful person who I've had the pleasure of interacting with a few times in real life; he simply loves what he does and has become THE source for ski area illustrations, even as resorts stop physically printing trail maps.
graupel··on Estes Rockets Model Scale 1:100 Replica of SpaceX Falcon 9
I love launching rockets with my 11 year old but it's so hard to find a good spot these days where you don't end up with a police visit (that happened, worked out fine) or a risk of starting a wildfire, etc.
graupel··on FCC chair proposes ban on deceptive “Broadcast TV” and “Regional Sports” fees
It's interesting because to me the idea of labeling these the way they are now, like "BROADCAST TV FEE" is in some ways, more clear and less of a "hidden fee" than bundling it in with the larger price and not saying why the price is, what it is.

What I do think is that the headline price - the deal, so to speak - should show the all-in full price including added fees, so if this gets us to that, I'm all for it.

graupel··on Utah's Governor Should Veto “Social Media Regulations” Bill S.B. 152
The thing is, Utah's Governor is impossibly excited to sign this into law as soon as possible.
graupel··on Using Super Glue
I can't remember if this was someone I know or an urban legend, but I heard a story once of someone who grabbed a super glue from a purse thinking it was eye drops because the container shapes are so similar, and got super glue right in their eyes. IIRC they didn't lose vision but it was quite a mess.

TLDR don't store your super glue near your eyedrops.

graupel··on Kenji López-Alt spent 5 months studying Chicago thin-crust pizza
Provel isn't worthy of using the word "cheese" to describe it. (said lovingly as someone who worked in STL and was often handed pies of "office pizza" from Imo's.)
graupel··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
This sounds like pricing used to be for the Twitter Firehose - so expensive (and so, so much data to wrangle)
graupel··on Gigi Sohn Withdraws as Nominee for FCC
A 2-2 split FCC does no good for anyone, it's really frustrating to see 2 years of waiting end with no action.
graupel··on Ask HN: Which big tech companies are still (or permanently) remote?
Automattic
graupel··on Monitoring my weather at home
I'm a Meteorologist and after trying all kinds of commercially available and home-brew systems over the years I settled on a Weatherflow unit, by Tempest, it JUST WORKS and does everything I need, minus air quality which I have a Purple Air sensor for.

graupel··on Wow, so they let AI fly an F-16 fighter jet
Eh, I mean I'm not a pilot either and they let me fly one (was a guest in the back seat of a USAF Thunderbird and got to take control for a bit).
graupel··on The first DeLorean wasn’t a car, it was a snowcat
I love this story, and despite only being inside a snowcat twice I often browse for-sale listings and such, even though I have no practical use for one. They are just such neat vehicles.
