greazy··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
Everyone should checkout Dark Reader extension, it's been doing adaptive dark mode for many years, and it's customisable. It even does light mode too. Using it in Firefox on HN right now!
greazy··on We fine-tuned a 235B model on 4 GPUs. Then we didn't need it
I really enjoyed this blog, well written and takes the time to describe technical aspects of LLMs that I wasn't familiar with (noob here).
greazy··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
> Ask your LLM for details but

No, mate. You need to provide details. The onus is on you to support your claim.

greazy··on Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf]
I've never heard of a UBI experiment that limited "toil". Nearly all UBI studies I've come across show an improvement in life satisfaction, reduced homelessness, drug use, etc.

I think you've taken the "work less" that was found in some studies to suggest they needed "toil". They simply found it somewhere else.

greazy··on Cloudflare acquires Deno
SLURM -> NVIDIA. Pretty big deal for the science community.
greazy··on Tell HN: I've been paying for a rural Tanzanian's education for 10 years
Amazing. Hit me up if you're on the cusp of supporting another student and need a little bit more.

I'll promise to donate for 2 years if all things stay steady for me

greazy··on Tell HN: I've been paying for a rural Tanzanian's education for 10 years
My wife was sponsoring an Afghani girl for many years. When the Taliban took over, all education stopped for young girls.

It was really hard when we stopped receiving cute drawings. We're still have the GO AWAY CORONA :( drawing.

Edit: thanks OP for inspiring me, I've registered for monthly donations to the TEP.

greazy··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
The very cool https://www.astrouxds.com aims to be the pixel version of the physical dashboards. It's a very cool design library.

Not related to Astro the templating engine.

greazy··on Qwen 3.8 Omni Flash
This is the approach recommended for starting a hobby as well. Buy the cheapest set of tools and if they break or are not meeting your needs.
greazy··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
And this is why I hate reading other peoples R scripts.

15 packages loaded but only 3 used, `rm(list = ls())` at the top of every script, hard coded paths or worse using the `here` package.

greazy··on Alternatives to MinIO for single-node local S3
I've been watching seaweedfs for a few years now. It is very cool tech and I'm itching to use it but unfortunately the docs are very bare bones.

Do you have plans to improve the docs? Some of the info I needed was inside GitHub issues / discussions.

Overall very cool project. One of these days I'll reach out about enterprise support for my usecase.

greazy··on StarCraft returns in 2030 as an open-world shooter
If you're a fan of single player checkout the mod scene. It's very good. UED First Light is excellent.
greazy··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
In a way, it might reflect accurate space and our universe. We really might be alone.
greazy··on Kimi K3 (2.8T) at 1 token/s on a MacBook Pro, streamed from four SSDs
What is "sticky" in this context?
greazy··on How to build a printer
Right! I like this usecase very much. For uses existing software infra to perform the required task.

I wonder now what else we've reinvented when it comes to sending data...

greazy··on How to build a printer
I don't understand the purpose. What am I missing?

The author "prints" to the eink display. Why not load say the pdf directly?

greazy··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
> Bill's frustration is not unreasonable.

I find this single sentence not only awkward but frustratingly annoying. Bills frustration is beyond reasonable.

greazy··on Unified Arabic
The lack of books and therefore lack of reading leads to reduce vocabulary. I read somewhere the average of known words by an Arabic speaker was substantially lower than English speakers.

When I switch to speaking Arabic (poorly) I struggle to find words because my vocab level is so bad. Imagine for an every day person, not being able to effectively express themselves. It would lead to a ton of frustration, miscommunication and misunderstanding.

I really need to improve my Arabic!

greazy··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
Thanks for answering my question! I also have mild aphantasia, I can navigate okay but not as well as my wife.

I also get lost or disoriented in big city centres but in a natural park or trek I'm totally fine.

greazy··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
I want to know if aphantasia is associated with any other mental models. For example, driving, map reading, spatial awareness.

I have a theory that Aphantasia is the symptom of something else, and this other thing relates to how the brain of such individuals stores information. I think it's stored in a more "compressed" state.

As an example, I find myself remembering where info is and not what the info acrually was.

Humans are not homogeneous. I think this is a huge evolutionary advantage, different mental modes improved our survivability.

But of course in modern day life such "divergence" can lead to pathology.

greazy··on Slack Code
You're right, they won't be paying me to write code in the near future... They will be paying me to fix code.

Good times ahead!

greazy··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
But they are very good at identifying patterns though. This task requires little logic IMO. So why not leverage LLM to perform redundancy analysis?
greazy··on AI has access to a vastly larger working memory than the human brain
What I was suggesting is to ask the LLM to compare function usage across files to identify overlap/redundancy.

The idea is to use the LLM to analyse the code base first before taking any action.

I think I'm suggesting a centaur approach.

greazy··on AI Isn't Outthinking Mathematicians. It's Out-Remembering Them
Can LLMs not do this for you? Or would they go too far?
greazy··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Oddly aggressive comment on something so mundane. Guess it's a pet peeve of yours?
greazy··on Where did the old web go? We followed 657,607 links to find out
For me that's not the old web.

The old web was local forum created by gamers for gamers who hosted real life events. You could post asking for super specific advice to your locale. It was eaten by reddit.

There were cool IRC servers for all sorts of niche projects and topics. This still exists of course but a lot of it was eaten by Discord or Slack.

While I never participated, sites like LiveJournal provided both a unique outlet and view into other people's lives. I think a lot of social media like Instagram and Facebook eat this up.

I'm sure everyone has their own versions. And this is the old web that was gobbled up by mega sites which aim to commericalise the crap out of everything.

Btw I consider HN part of the old web.

greazy··on Show HN: I spent a week building a CLV model and the CMO shrugged
This would be a better link for the article to match the title.

greazy··on Ask HN: I still don't understand why AI agents need "skills"
Where are you selling them?
greazy··on Handbook.md shows that long policy documents do not reliably govern agents
DAGs are used in scientific workflows like snakemake. I wonder if such pipeline engines are use in LLM space.
