grebc··on Everything is going wrong for Muhammad bin Salman
It takes work by the citizenry to keep the political class in check, regardless of the configuration. Kings don’t rule in isolation, nor do elected governments. In a lot of countries we’ve abdicated that responsibility, likewise the political class has abdicated its responsibility to its citizens.

Read any government document from almost any department and the language for citizen has become customer. Language matters, I’m not a customer, but no one cares.

Heaps of normies use either Chat, Grok or now Muse to replace their Google Search of everything.

>Find me restaurants in Queenstown

>Is it more expensive to renovate or rebuild in XYZ location

>Is so & so being narcissistic with this message copy paste

People basically outsource their thinking and think it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

grebc··on Why are we even doing all this?
I hate the concrete/modern aesthetic, but live and let live I say and you should build your dream one day.

I read something interesting recently that some huge percentage of society, all genders, all classes etc etc hate modern architectural compared to classic architectural style. The only people that like are architects and/or architecture students. Amusing tid bit. Could also be complete junk when I drive all over Australia and see white/grey render & black trim absolutely everywhere. Yuck.

grebc··on We are entering a period of overlapping crises
I had trouble reading it because they kept drawing my eyes to them, so I stopped.
grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
Yeah, I think a lot of people regular people when dealing other regular people they trust, the principle of it comes out in the wash somewhere applies a lot.
grebc··on Passkeys are not a trap
It was inconceivable to crypto bro’s that kidnapping people for their keys was a possibility…

If banks make it a requirement you use certain pre approved devices, you better believe badusb/physical theft will take place more commonly and it will definitely not be someone as polite as James.

grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
I sold a property earlier in August, my solicitor had to “verify my identity” this time even though she acted as my solicitor when purchasing said product.

Now tell me how intelligent the system is in that scenario.

grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
Any sane country has a sticker/menu price that is the price you pay when you settle up.
grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
The first scenario is done on account & settled later, an established customer/supplier relationship would easily handle a power outage.
grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
That's a fair point to make that for 90% of us we get cash from a machine that requires electricity.

It's not a fair characterisation that cash is useless without electricity because once you have it(presumably before the electricity stops) then you can still transact with it.

grebc··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
The rules for laundering - know your customer - are ridiculous, governments don't need to turn banks in quasi-state actors to squash laundering if they really wanted to stop it.

Good on Sweden for going against the trend of ever increasing digitisation which is only going to be used against their citizens in bad ways.

I don’t know about a III but Flash was good in the early/mid 2000’s while I was attending university.

Certainly was 10x better than what HTML was providing at the time, HTML really only jumped forward in this department when Steve banned it on iOS.

I don’t miss it, however my friend at uni made some wicked animations in the adobe Flash editor, whatever it was called. He should’ve went onto animation etc but stuck to programming.

It’s a supermarket, staff will be stocktaking, restocking, walking past A LOT.
grebc··on French supermarkets suffer refrigerator shutdown after unprecedented cyberattack
I can fathom the product losses from this one incident would outweigh all the imaginary reasons people tell themselves for why monitoring/connected/smart devices are useful in their work/home.

Definitely won’t stop anyone buying though is the saddest part.

grebc··on Passkeys are a trap
Yes, that’s what they’ve told you. Good that you listen to them.
grebc··on Passkeys are a trap
You’re making life miserable with such ideas.

I bought a house earlier this year and the bank froze my deposit I sent to the real estate agent.

I rang the bank straight away and badgered them to unlock it ASAP in case the sale fell through for their BS fraud department to sift it.

They blamed the fact the real estate they’d never transacted with before, I politely told them they’re based in one state while I was purchasing in another.

It took 2 hours of back and forth to get them to send it, even after they did all their security questions.

It’s all a fugazi, they/governments do not want you having large amounts of money - it’s as simple as that.

grebc··on Passkeys are a trap
Since you’ve made up a question I didn’t ask or intimate, I’ll leave the discussion here.
grebc··on Passkeys are a trap
Seems to me that the institutions of the FIDO alliance would have better luck chasing these people that break laws.

Instead we’re increasingly locked out of devices we buy and told/mandated this is how you’ll use them.

grebc··on Passkeys are a trap
Why is your grandpa or fictional billions users being MITM’d?

Passkeys are an end run on general purpose hardware largely under your own control, which is a much bigger issue in scale than dealing with customers who can’t access the services they pay for because of some byzantine security or know your customer laws/procedures.

grebc··on I wish you the best in the Offline
People have a tendency to blame the protocols and servers vs. the main websites/apps people mean.

Protocols going to keep on trucking regardless of whether Twitter, IG, Facebook go up/down/sideways.

grebc··on OpenAI annualised revenues $20B less than previously signalled
>Right now we have a ~$1 trillion company which a ton of the “economy” and valuations are based on, with near zero information on how it’s doing.

This is definitely by design and encouraged by the VC’s. It’s disgusting to consider what a simulacrum of a market the stock market has actually become.

grebc··on People are asking ChatGPT to help them decide how to vote in the midterms

grebc··on "I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"
It really does seem that every business is out to squeeze the living daylights out of you.

No one(execs, middle management, shareholders) is happy to earn a decent(10-20%) profit anymore and call it a day.

Every last drop needs to be wrung out of the customer or the employee or the citizen in the case of government.

grebc··on The evolution of effective altruism
I find increasingly that written words from organisations are trending worse. I tend to find particular authors are sometimes good writers, and sometimes they have blogs which I have always liked but more & more lately.

My national/public broadcaster/media organisation(ABC, Australia) is doubling down on fiddling all day with headlines & the pictures. They’re not selling any product, they don’t need to follow commercial trends.

https://rss.social/ has been a godsend for finding random articles of interesting content, A LOT than HN these days, especially when you don’t want to index on AI content. https://substack.com/@gurwinder/posts https://jmarriott.substack.com/archive

I like history podcasts, especially anything by Mike Duncan, and some of the pop culture stuff by the Ringer is ok.

Sorry, I don’t have any good recommendations for commercial publications.
