greyw··on Egoless Mathematics in the AI Era
If you read the whole post you would see the disclaimer that it was written with the help of AI.

So folks are using AI to help them cope about AI. LLMs "stole" pending results is just another cope. Im sure quasi riemann was about to be proved if it wasnt for those pesky AI models. Jeez.

greyw··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
France has sky high taxes and yet they run a 5% deficit. Cant cut social programs that are way too generous (in relation to income) so higher taxes it is.

Dont see that working in the long run

greyw··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
There is a giantic industry that does exactly that. Copart, IAR etc
greyw··on Nietzschian Debugger
Even Anti-AI tech now uses AI. How far we have come!
greyw··on Brown student maps the hidden global labor powering AI
So lets do away with remote work again. Force people to come back to office
greyw··on Oai-math-revised: a community hub for revising OpenAI's math write-ups
I feel for these people, certainly. There is no point lying to them though. We cant tell them everything is going to be alright just going to be how it used to be. That would be highly deceptive and immoral.
greyw··on Oai-math-revised: a community hub for revising OpenAI's math write-ups
My implication is that being left behind is worse than other choices.
greyw··on Oai-math-revised: a community hub for revising OpenAI's math write-ups
There are always people left behind by technological changes. Better move forward than cling to the past.
greyw··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
I wonder how much higher electricity costs would be without natural gas, fracking and nuclear.
greyw··on Meta strikes deal with Zuckerberg to protect him from California wealth tax
People also have the right to move and that does affect tax liability
greyw··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
My point is that people want their short term economic needs met (food, shelter, quality of life).

You wont find broad support for policies that save an abstract future 40y away if you cause huge economic hardship on current people.

You can see how quickly support for addressing climate change erroded in the last few once more pressing short term needs of people were not met anymore. Academics and the upper middle class can keep theorizing about how to save the future because they can afford it while the less fortunate will turn to policies that dont hurt their short term prospects.

Bottom line is that ignoring the economic impact is foolish. No lasting political support

greyw··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
We dont have record low global crop yield. Are you confusing single countries with global output?
greyw··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Its the other way around. Climate is going to be least important of your problems if you cant put food on the table.
greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
Even LLMs understood my joke. Its probably time for you to make use of modern tools :)
greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
Following that line of reasoning a turned off pc is the farthest ahead. Its extremly secure after all and has no apps ;)
greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
Thats exactly what I mean. I dont care about Posix or the whining about "anti-features". The BSD stuff is a clear subset that doesnt get the job done.

Posix is more an art form documenting the far gone past rather than a practical tool

greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
Copyright will adapt.

Also my personal opinion about copyright _in the FOSS domain_ is that I simply dont care. Copyleft as the GNU folks like to call it is just using the copyright laws to achieves certain free software objectives. If that doesnt work anymore there will be another fix

greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
I mean OpenBSD's utils cant even match GNU's coreutils so I think they have bigger problems
greyw··on Wine ported to OpenBSD
OpenBSD will probably fall even further behind
greyw··on Tesla Roadster
So just generic capitalism critique?
greyw··on More on Anthropic's Scion ripping off Mononoke
The theory did not do anything revolutionary. The products did.
greyw··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
If it makes them more money
greyw··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
There will always be people that write code with pen and paper. Its going to be an art form though rather than something productive.
greyw··on The Future of Mathematics
That will also happen with regulation. It's just gonna be slightly slower process
greyw··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
My HN frontpage is filled with anti-AI rants
greyw··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
Indeed no one forces you to look up the solution.
greyw··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Yeah because they commit tax fraud. I wont help businesses commit fraud.
greyw··on bzip3
The author of bzip3 probably doesnt like pushover licenses so made user rights stronger
greyw··on Watch the 'Eclipse of the Century' Next Year When Spain, Egypt and More Go Dark
"Let me potentially permanently damage my eyes to save 20 bucks".
greyw··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
Just pay with a credit card, it's the optimal way by far (float, flexibility, rewards). No need to overthink it.
