Perhaps gravity is the only radiation they cant hide, so all we could detect of them is 'dark matter'?
To the self study program, you might want to add a weekly 2hr Life drawing group, supported by any of the excellent anatomy books by Beverley Hale [ Art Students League ], Bridgeman or even Loomis.
The pre-play screenshot seems a bit angry, and Im note sure how it ties in? In contrast, the content of the video I think was on-target, and thought provoking.
A shot of manning being 'escorted' to trial, or just his face would be more suitable I think.
or you could lead with the text slide "Is truth the Enemy? ..".. which is impactful.
Thanks for doing this!
A standoff is better than all out escalation with increasingly dramatic incursions and dialog where each side loses face, raising political tensions.
We should realize the beneficiaries of cyberwar escalation are the contractor companies coupled tightly to the NSA. I don't think that many hackers are getting rich, comfortable maybe, but not the big bucks.
If modern arms are cyber-warfare and information flow, then the arms to keep that power in check are computation, math, encryption, anonymity, private messaging, realtime chat, social networks, web graphics ...
So the right to bear arms in todays terms, I would argue, _is_ the right to a) private internet communications between parties and b) public information broadcast to everyone
'The Conversation' 1974 : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071360/
Another theory is that Stuxnet stopped Iran nuking San Diego.. but that didn't require recording the private communications of everyone on the planet.
It takes a concerted effort to resist the feeling we are guilty : our government and military and legal systems are there to protect us.. if I'm noticed and singled out when I cross a border, for criticizing Cheney on twitter, then maybe its me.. maybe I'm out of line.
Maybe the huge embarrassment at having to take my belt off in public at TSA checkpoint was my fault.. after all, I chose to wear a belt that had a metal buckle.. I brought it upon myself.
I think this happened to David Brooks.. I think the state sponsored 'terror' scheme of putting hackers and journalists away for 10 years for acts of conscience.. has been effective in keeping Journalists in line. Speak out and you too could end up rotting in a cell.
This college dropout did what those at the NSA with PhDs failed to do in their responsibility to ensure that their organisation stayed within the spirit and laws of their mandate.
He did what Brooks failed to do as a journalist, ie. to draw attention to a worrying centralization of absolute power, and abuse of law.
Lets describe Benjamin Franklin, John Rockefeller, Walt Disney as high school dropouts, rather than look at what they achieved.
Basically a character assassination, rather than looking at the issue.
I think its pretty obvious the material was filtered pretty well..theres basically no hard facts there, bare minimum to support the claim. Which I think is responsible whistle-blowing.
if HN isnt looking after the internet... who is ?
Maybe its up to us to do our part [ along with reddit, 4chan, Anons, RMS/EFF ] so normal people can feel like the internet is their space ?
but it seems like a good opportunity to really send a message.
Many of them will be cringing at Abu Graib ... its about real oversight and balance of power and correct policy.
Now is the time for Silicon Valley to step up.
Client to server is just too easy for large organisations to abuse.
'Carriers are permitted to meet their CALEA obligations through the services of “Trusted Third Parties (TTP)” -- that is, they can hire outside companies, which meet security requirements outlined in CALEA, to perform all of the required functions.'
You could even increase sales using "..stole my thunder" as a meme :]
I've been gradually doing a few of these as I bootstrap Gridmaths.com. You can see some sample screenshots of worked problems in blogposts at : quantblog.wordpress.com
I think we miss engaging with quite a few students, because we focus on procedures and process rather than visualization in school [ I could be wrong, this is subjective, but at least we should try and explore different ways of presenting math ]
Khanacademy videos and GeoGebra might be useful also.
