groundCode··on Ask HN: I want to learn Ruby. What do you have for me?
For Rails, you should start with the excellent Rails Tutorial

http://ruby.railstutorial.org/

groundCode··on Ask HN: If you were CTO of a new start-up, what would your stack be?
Angular for the front end work. Backend API built out in either Python with a minimal framework like flask or perhaps Go if I had the luxury of time to learn as I built it. Postgres for the DB.
groundCode··on What I would have written
Tricky though, for someone who probably gets paid at least partially because of his social media validation, to not care about it....
groundCode··on From Idea to 10 Paying Customers in Less Than a Week
Now there's an idea.
groundCode··on Pydown – An HTML5 presentation builder written in Python
Why not rewrite it? - it's a good exercise, gave him another arrow in his programming quiver and gives people who prefer python the option to use it in python rather than ruby.
groundCode··on Ask HN: Should Bill Gates come back as the CEO of Microsoft?
No - Bill Gates is spending his time doing far more useful things
groundCode··on Do I need to learn GIT?
I would say you don't need to know the minutiae, but having at least a basic understanding will be very helpful.
groundCode··on Learning how to think
Agreed. It's all too easy, in hindsight, to claim that a happenstance was because of some great vision of "Privacy is a relic of the past" but more often than not, serendipity wins.
groundCode··on DDoS Attack on DigitalOcean.com
while the ads are over the top, the core message of "configure how many of those, and how much of that etc" did kind of draw me in.
groundCode··on Be careful when going client-only (Firebase)
Given that the use case for Firebase is taking the place of your traditional server side architecture and storage, it seems kind of obvious that you would have to take heed of the security implications and set them up properly. The security concerns don't magically vanish just because you don't write the server side code.
groundCode··on Ask HN: If I ran a one day "CI / DevOps with Python and Salt" would you attend?
I would be interested
groundCode··on Myth: Select * is Bad
select * can also be bad if you have any sort of system that expects or uses your columns by index. someone changes up your database, adds a column or some such and all of a sudden your consuming code breaks all over the place.
groundCode··on Tweets printed by home-built ticker-tape machine
Looks like a lovely piece - a piece of modern archaica (if that's a word)
groundCode··on Schema migrations merged into Django master
This is great news for Django - congratulations to all involved!
groundCode··on Specter – A minimal, elegant and free Markdown-enabled blogging platform
looks like a nice little project. how did it ever get built without some crowd funding though? :)
groundCode··on So that’s what I’m going to do
Nicely done - good luck to you sir!
groundCode··on Why I left Google
I don't believe it! cummings using capitals and punctuation. :)
groundCode··on Stack
Looks fantastic, but I wonder about the tolerance wrt paper alignment. I'm picturing my office where people usually rush up to the printer, grab their printout and bump the printer.
groundCode··on Ask HN: Is it ever OK to completely unleash on incompetent coworkers?
No. One of you needs to be the adult in the relationship.
groundCode··on London Startup Map
just clicking around and hit a link to aquafide who: "develops and distributed innovative and sustainable water treatment solutions for municipal and industrial customers" but seem to have a website that is "First Car"? very very odd.

other than that - neat idea

groundCode··on Ask HN: Why is .NET often avoided in the startup world?
>>maybe they should release some more of their ecosystem to make it viable for more startups to use .NET. Someone small using some free compilers/libraries and MySQL may eventually be a prospect to buy VS and SQL Server

And there's the thing right there - I don't think Microsoft really cares much about startups - after all, the success rate is fairly low for startups and it probably doesn't seem worth it to them to "invest" in businesses that are, more often than not, going to fail. Putting their marketing budget behind large corporations and governments is far more lucrative for them.

groundCode··on How do I “think in AngularJS” if I have a jQuery background?
firebase has bindings for angular:

https://www.firebase.com/blog/2013-03-29-firebase-bindings-f...

and

https://github.com/firebase/angularFire

which make it relatively simple to wire up your angular model to firebase.

groundCode··on Ask HN: How do you hack this hot weather?
mouthwash made with some high quality peppermint essential oil. The menthol in mint plants apparently tricks your brain into thinking you are cooler than you are......
groundCode··on Technologically illiterate UK porn filter MP gets hacked and threatens reporter
Perhaps those in power simply need better (commercially disinterested, emotionally neutral) advisers for topics about which said politicians know nothing.
groundCode··on How we Went from Zero Audience to Over a Thousand Beta Signups
My thoughts exactly - a book about creating launch pages for products not yet built?
groundCode··on Ask HN: What weekend Project to show off ability to develop in other languages?
RSS readers seem the app-de-jour :)
groundCode··on The Rule of Three
I like the sentiment. Battle testing your generalised solution is always a good idea. It's also a good idea to know when you don't need a generalised solution.
groundCode··on Ask HN: Should I take interviews for practice/leverage?
Some advice I got was to go for an interview every 6 to 8 months whether you are looking for a job or not. The skill of interviewing well is different to the skill of actually doing the job and it never hurts to stay in practice.
groundCode··on Help with Rails?
Maybe stackoverflow or serverfault could help if you are having specific issues with the code or the server setup?
groundCode··on Ask HN: Why do you hate SQL?
Nicely put. SQL is the great equalizer.
